gghootch··on Show HN: Wherat – never skip celebrating your birthday again
Wherat is my evenings & weekends project to simplify throwing a party to such a degree that even the laziest of my friends will overcome their apathy and start celebrating their birthdays. Heck, they may even enjoy it for once.

I started working on this because last year I broke a promise to myself that I always throw a party for my birthday to celebrate life, love, happiness. Even I am apparently too apathetic sometimes. To prevent this from ever happening again, I started building Wherat.

Today, we help you: - Start organizing in time for your friends to join - Ask your guests questions - Calculate the number of drinks & snacks to buy

Secfi | Software engineer(s) | Amsterdam, the Netherlands | EUR 35-70k + equity

We're on a mission to increase employee’s private company ownership by helping them exercise their options - a complex and opaque process that typically comes with a lot of anxiety and unanswered questions. Our tools help you fully understand your stock options’ value and maximize their potential.

For example: one of the most complicated things for employees is figuring out how much taxes they need to pay when exercising their Incentive Stock Options or Non-qualified Stock Options. The tax planning tool inside our dashboard does just that: https://www.secfi.com/#gif-container

Complex challenges we’re working on next include: multiyear tax forecast analysis, recommendation engine based on various sources and fantastic UX and UI.

Things have been going very well here at Secfi, and consequently in 2019 we aspire to grow the team 3x. We’re looking for ten software engineers and two product managers to join us: https://www.secfi.com/careers

Interested? Please email careers@secfi.com to get in touch.

Love the direction this is going. Dreamt about such a system in the past as well. Looking forward to a mobile first experience which enables me to weigh-in on (local) issues in real-time.
gghootch··on Stop Complaining in February
Alternatively, you could take an existentialist approach.

Considering the meaningless, absurd, chaotic nature of the vast universe, is it really worth it to get all worked up over someone stepping on your toes?

gghootch··on Jobs that no longer exist today
9 out of 10 have explanatory text. Curious that the 'switchboard operator' is apparently a 'modern' enough occupation not to warrant an explanation. Funny, because I don't think many currently five year old kids will ever know what a switchboard operator did without websites like this teaching them.
gghootch··on Ask HN: My son wants to make side money programming
A lot of kids start with Wordpress customization or selling themes on ThemeForest.

gghootch··on Where Are the Hardest Places to Live in the U.S.?
Considering I am a European that has only traveled to the USA's west coast once in his life, you are right in this sense.
gghootch··on Where Are the Hardest Places to Live in the U.S.?
This report reminds me of a passage in "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman. Prestigious foundations such as the Gates Foundation pumped millions (billions?) of dollars into smaller scale education because a report identified that the worst performing schools had large classrooms in poor, rural counties. Much later, a second review of the data revealed that the best primary schools had large classrooms in poor, rural counties. The results were merely statistical outliers caused by small sample data.

It would not surprise me if the easiest places to live have identical demographics and characteristics as the hardest places to live. The correlation might be dual, but the causation is near impossible to identify.

Edit: long term memory fail.

gghootch··on Poll: If Yoda was a programmer, what would be his go-to language?
Definitely Assembly.

Luke: There's something not right here... I feel cold. Death.

Yoda: [points to a cave opening beneath a large tree] That place... is strong with the dark side of the Force. A domain of evil it is. In you must go.

Luke: What's in there?

Yoda: Only what you take with you.

Last year's thread:

1. Continue on the path of graduating cum laude -- √

2. Publish three academic papers -- due to an error on my side, this only became two :-(

3. Get a job -- √

4. Start a side project which actually has a chance of making some money -- well, this never happened...

5. Find the woman of my dreams -- thought I had found her, got rejected for a superficial reason, called her out on it, rejected her, met her again months later but felt I was too busy doing 1 & 2 to invest time in her. She's got a boyfriend now.

gghootch··on How to Launder Billions of Digital Dollars
I went to the DPRK (North Korea) past summer. Beforehand we met with a guy who went there a year before. In the payment memo field for his trip he wrote something akin to 'Payment for North Korea'. The bank cancelled his wire transfer and nearly cancelled his account. In the end they only barred him from making other payments to that bank account number.

My guess is everything is monitored but red flags only go off when suspicious activity is frequent or serious enough.

gghootch··on Ask HN: What is your favorite movie? And why do you like it?
Always used to be Children of Men and/or La cite des enfants perdus. First is the most intense movie I have ever seen, some scenes literally blew my mind. Latter is very dark whilst beautiful and sweet, like Amélie but better - more techfriendlly.

gghootch··on First impressions of Leap Motion
Try to move away from the PC analogy. Imagine a 30" display, running iPad applications. Your input consists of the exact same gestures, but now in the air instead of touching the screen.

Painting, drum-machines, games and many more applications come to mind. DJs moving from turning knobs on impenetrable devices to conducting a live mix on a huge ass screen? Yes, please.

gghootch··on Where to join a startup? Analyzing 'Who is Hiring' posts on Hacker News
Hi there, as mentioned in the post it only collected data on the top 25 startup hubs as identified by the Startup Genome Project (ok, and Amsterdam). Edinburgh is not on that list, so I didn't check for it. I did now: in total it's 3 since january 2012.

Note: not sure why, but the data does seem off from time to time. Manual Command-F for San Francisco for this month's hiring finds 26, while data.scan(htmlpage) finds 28...

For now it's a combination of factors. Weak programming skills + no driver's license is the gist of it. Both will likely be taken care of in six months, though.
gghootch··on Ask HN: How long would it take you to build instagram?
It was for a frighteningly ambitious side-project initiated thanks to a great university course - http://frapp.it

Unfortunately, due to time constraints we went the built first, talk to mentors etcetera and only then do actual diligent market research route. Everyone we've spoken to recognizes some value in the project and came up with different USPs. As a result, focus shifted dramatically in a matter of weeks, ultimately leading to a complete lack of focus and loss of a common goal. This week we re-evaluated it all, decided to work out these wrinkles in the coming weeks and start selling aggressively to a narrow collection of potential customers.

When all is said and done, I expect the iOS app will be shelved. Did learn a lot about iOS development, though :D!

gghootch··on Ask HN: How long would it take you to build instagram?
With the help of Parse's platform and this anypic tutorial/template I went from 'I built a simple Ruby web service once' to having created a fully customized Instagram-like service in about three months of 30% of my time spent on development. In the end, virtually everything was replaced and/or altered.
