Don't @ me with "appeal to authority", I admit it gladly. I don't worship at the altar of scientism (EDIT: scientism doesn't seem to be the correct word, it's not negative like I thought. I'm criticizing the "I Hecking Love Science (TM)" mentality that treat crappy non-reproducible soft-science studies as something that somehow has more value than common sense.)
You want to convince me, create better societies that are safer to live in than Singapore.
Then I gained perspective, and learned that Japan's navy had been entirely wiped out (EDIT: and the air force) the Japanese were trying to negotiate a surrender, but the US wouldn't budge on something as minor as allowing to keep Hirohito as figurehead emperor (which they eventually did after they surrendered after the nukes).
It was racism, plain and simple. Actually, it's more than racism, I'm not sure that word explains it. This isn't the relatively mild white-on-black racism of 1940s America. This is a much different level of racism, where Americans saw the Japanese as complete subhumans not even worth morally debating over. The Americans spent years building those bombs, so they must have thought it was anti-climactic not to try them. They didn't want to use them near the white people in Europe, so who best than a remote island of people you don't even view as humans, to the point where you put your own citizens in internment camps for sharing an ethnicity with them?
But I see so many Americans clinging to the myth that the nukes were a utilitarian moral choice. Admitting the truth to themselves would raise some questions about their country which clash with the perception they have.
1. Install LTS server with a sudo admin user and complex password (yes, password, not key. I still end up using keys for backup automation because it's easier.)
2. apt install fail2ban. Don't even need to configure it: its default configuration will auto-ban any IPs trying to brute-force SSH.
3. apt install unattended-upgrades (nowadays installed by default)
I'd like to see anyone hack that.
You mention running containers with no elevated permissions. I've taken a liking to Docker because, in addition to its many benefits, it lets me separate MY processes from those of the OS. It's just so simple when I can identify the server's running services with "docker ps". I'm curious, when was the last time a Docker exploit could escape the container and modify the host? I read it happened in the early days of Docker but is that still a risk? They would need to: a) exploit a bug in a service you're relying on (eg nginx), b) use the former bug to exploit a bug in Docker, c) defeat the Linux kernel's namespace/cgroup isolation. Is that a realistic threat in 2023?
Would you also be a fan of a global union with a single currency?
Some people will use HN for job postings. I would certainly expect that anyone with two brain cells to rub together uses a throwaway account for anything but the most boring opinions about C++ proposals. All it takes is a single throwaway sentence 7 years ago that pisses off the Church, and you could end up not getting hired.
"If/else" are a core construct in programming languages. Observables add "when", which I think is just as essential. Whenever someone describes an autonomous system, they will use "when X, do Y". So it makes sense to me that code follows that.
A lot of the time I just want to write a piece of code that and plug it into the system without having to worry about coupling or its effect on other parts of the code. Most of the time I don't have clear requirements, and need to stay flexible.
For example, new requirement to turn off the LCD after X minutes of inactivity, and turn it back on when the user presses a button? I just create a new component (instanced based on a configuration flag), plug it into the event bus reacting to ButtonPress events, and call it a day, without having to worry about something else breaking, often without even having to read existing code (except how to get notified of the event).
Even when modifying existing code, it's easier to replace an event, easy to find which components are depending on that event, etc.
I've read this before from Americans, and I don't get it. In my culture if parents can pay for their kids' education, they do it. There's a time and a place to teach them financial responsability, I feel distracting them with financial concerns during their most challenging years of schooling is not it.
When I went to college (paid for by my parents), I had friends who had to work on the side to pay for rent and groceries. They barely hung by, very few had great grades since they had to split their time between work and study. One of my close friends ended up dropping out because he was burned out.
Of course this doesn't mean you should pay 50k for a degree in feminist dance therapy, you make sure you only pay for something with ROI (That's another thing I don't understand about Americans. In a country with tuition so high, how can so many pursue degrees with such awful job prospects?)
The Catholic Church has 100x less abuse than public schools (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/has-media-ignored-sex-abuse-in-...) , and yet schools don't have this negative reputation.
I know a single abused child is a child too much, but the bad reputation the Church gets is excessive. They probably have a better track record than any other institution.
White person treats people differently based on race = racist
White person treats people the same regardless of race = racist
White parent doesn't want their 3rd grader being taught they are an oppressor = racist parent
2. Even if it was like that daily, how do you know the Asian kids weren't still playing and enjoying time with friends? Maybe the time they spent studying is just the free time the non-Asian kids spent addicted on the Playstation, and not all their free time.
3. Are there any studies that show Asian-American kids turn out more miserable than other races? Because AFAIK there's no one more depressed than white people. (which is kind of understandable considering modern American culture tries to brainwash them since early childhood to hate themselves, but still...)
I seem to remember the issue with 2.x is that they removed all the commercial art from top-notch illustrators from the training data due to the backlash, so it was just way worse at generating great-looking things, which is all the user cares about. So the community stayed on their custom-trained models derived from SD 1.5 (which, yes, often included porn).
Try browsing Google from a browser other than Chrome.
Of the remaining 1%, most don't need a VPN for anything personal. It's literally just a handful of geeks who need VPN (mainly for secure piracy, or accessing different regional Netflix catalogs), and maybe a few dozen journalists living in dictatorships.
Mozilla needs to gut spending. Get rid of all the diversity /hr/evangelism people bloating their employee headcount and funneling people's donations to divisive causes like that org that doesn't hire white men (forgot the name but it made me cancel my monthly donation to Mozilla). They shouldn't need more than 25% non-technical staff, and the purpose of those 25% should be exclusively to support the technical staff. Instead they became another bloated Big NGO that's basically welfare for liberal arts majors in California.
1. Constant crying wolf about climate change. I've been told we're "10 years away from climate catostrophe" since I was a kid in the 90s. But this time it's really about to happen, right?
2. There's people who agree with you that global warming is a serious threat, but refuse to be "economical cuckolds" by sacrificing their economical safety, while countries that pollute far more are given breaks. The argument is why should they, as members of the western middle and working class, be the ones to sacrifice and suffer while the Chinese and Indians don't have to? All because decades ago the elites of their country profited off industrialisation? The same elites that keep screwing them over?
"Oh but the Indians don't produce as much CO2 per capita" so? They would if they could. The average Indian makes almost zero conscious decisions to be environmentally-friendly compared to a westerner. As globalisation keeps making the western worker poorer and the rest of the world wealthier, so will the Indians' CO2 production rise.
And the only reason CO2 per capita is lower is because those countries left their population growth completely unchecked. You're asking western people who can't even afford to have a kid to sacrifice while those on the other end of the world don't have to.
3. RE Greta, people see Greta Thunberg as the typical propaganda mascot of the elites: privileged, pretentious, attention-seeking Twitterati nepobaby who only seems to call out westerners, even though westerners make more conscious environmental choices than any other demographic. People have seen this playbook many times before, she's just a newer model on the assemblyline of insufferable leftists that the average person changes the channel as soon as their mug is on the screen.
I see the HN headlines like "new model approaches GPT4 in benchmarks!" but they turn out to suck when I try them. What can I use today that comes close to GPT4? Certainly not Bard.
I generally run 2 tests to gauge:
1. Write me a Python script that blah blah blah
2. Write me the lyrics to a song about blah blah blah
Only GPT4 has given me impressive results. For #2 the other models manage to rhyme (except most local models), but the rhymes on other models are really basic compared to GPT4's.
Upvotes to the left, folks.
Damn, the shit you've let the establishment feed you...
If you had said this about any other race your comment would be flagged right now and you might even lose your job if your employer got wind of it. But as things stand, you'd probably be showered with praise if your employer is a big tech, mainstream media, or academia institution.
What made you not stick with it?
1. Any chance for a mobile version with cloud sync? Qt compiles for mobile too, after all. I access my notes from my phone all the time so this is a must for me.
2. How come so many indie devs are off making their own notes app instead of pooling their efforts? For example off the top of my head QOwnNotes is a Qt widget note app, and a QML-based one I think is called Noter but which I can't find anymore now.
3. Judging from the UI I take it you're an Evernote user, or used to be? There was a post today about all the Evernote staff being laid off, so I feel pressured to move away ASAP. Other than Joplin do you have any recommendations that work on mobile?
I was gifted a new rando chinese IP cam that uses the mobile app. It's not googlable. I've been using as a outside security camera. The camera saves to an SD card continuously, and has a paid option to use the cloud which I did not take. It has a mobile app, KP WIFICAM, which lets me view the feed in real-time even over the Internet.
I can even view or download the past few days of recordings on the SD card from a menu. However, they are separated into chunks of 10 minutes, so I would have to manually download nearly 100 files files (tap, Download, wait to finish, move to next clip) to get a single day of recordings.
How could I automate/simplify the downloading of these clips from the SD cards to my laptop? How is the mobile app listing the recordings and fetching them?
I ran a tool called Agent-DVR and it found the camera feed using a format called ONVIF. So I think the mobile app uses this protocol https://stackoverflow.com/questions/29159422/get-data-from-l... , is there a tool like this available for Linux I could use without spending a couple of days installing a developer environment and writing my own code?
Maybe this applies to homeless street walkers. But the majority of prostitution I'm aware of (anecdotal, I know) is middle-class men who go to freelance call girls 10x wealthier than they are. The customer pays a several days' worth of his wages for 2h of fun. So I would say it can be argued that the purchaser is a bigger victim than the seller, considering the financial power dynamics.
The diversity Harvard wants is the golden calf of American liberals: black Americans. Diversity is almost always code for black people. No other race seems to deserve any attention. See how campaigns like #OscarsSoWhite were propagandized as discrimination against blacks even though the percentage of black actors winning Oscars was nearly identical to their percentage of the population, i.e. Oscars were perfect representational of black people, meanwhile every other race was greatly under-represented.
A race-blind policy that factors in class/income will result in more poor asian students dominating placement, likely at the expense of black students. We already know from the discrimination lawsuits how much contempt Harvard has for asian Americans, I assure you Harvard don't want this kind of diversity.
Facebook isn't going to deploy malware to my phone using Whatsapp, MS isn't going to do that using Outlook, Google isn't going to do that through Google Maps. Everything I used is either by a reputable developer, or open-source from F-Droid.
The only way I'm getting malware is if they manage to: 1) exploit a bug in my up-to-date web browser, 2) bug #1 is used to exploit a bug in the hardware driver. Oh, and of course, since I only visit reputable sites, I'm never exposed to malware. I'd have better odds of winning the lottery.
The last time I had a Google phone was the 2012 Nexus, and I said never again. It had absolutely trash speakers and microphone. I couldn't be talking to someone when it was windy, I couldn't hear them. And when I tried recording a video at a sports stadium, the audio was completely distorted from the noise because the mic couldn't keep up with the noise.
Is the Pixel a good choice for people who spend the majority of their time on the road and not in a quiet office or home?
That's very surprising, it would make upgrading from Qt 5 to Qt 6 a no-no for the small companies who use Qt LGPL. I'm sure they want to keep developer mindshare. Which LGPL Qt 5 modules became GPL in Qt 6?
