gesman··on Blackmailers use false copyright claims to shut down victims' YouTube accounts
Many YouTube publishers also maintain their own successful portal with paid subscriptions, memberships, product affiliations etc...

There is always plan B.

Google of course prefer 100% dependence on their platforms.

gesman··on Blackmailers use false copyright claims to shut down victims' YouTube accounts
This also a repeated lesson to never trust 100% of your business to some platform you don’t control.

YouTube, Adsense, PayPal, eBay... the list is long and stories are plenty.

Use platform for what it’s good for and have plan B always ready and active

gesman··on Dotfile madness
I always add C:\U to my Path and store all standalone executable programs to C:\U

I also have C:\CMD for my own batch files.

Every single program should be fully contained in its own directory including all the settings, logging, configuration etc...

No touching of any common resource or repository.

It should be enough to delete single tree to fully uninstall program with all the garbage it created along the way

gesman··on Dotfile madness
This is the consequence of enterprise practices of hiring el-cheapo, hit-and-run contractors or outsourcing development to middlemen in “cost-efficient” regions.

End developer is inexperienced, temporary, not valued and hence his deliverables

gesman··on Insurance Company Says NotPetya Is an “Act of War”, Refuses to Pay
Multi billion insurance Co is not going to argue with you on $25k petty theft.

Junior clerk is going to check paperwork and process your claim.

$100M claim is a different story.

gesman··on If San Francisco is so great, why is everyone I love leaving?
In short:

Cost of living + abusive taxes

gesman··on Sex censorship killed the internet we love
I think something like outline.com is going to change that. If publishers will keep flooding their content with garbage - somebody is going to clean it for them.
gesman··on Insurance Company Says NotPetya Is an “Act of War”, Refuses to Pay
It’s interesting that insurance Co didn’t point to an absence of proper inclusion clause. They tried to find exclusions that may help them to pull the fast one on a customer.

Which means the policy wording clearly matched the covered event.

gesman··on How do you sue / torpedo your ex-employer's IP after you have left a startup?
Did they promised you something and didn't deliver?

OR

You think you deserve to get something from someone else and didn't get what you wanted?

These are two different things. If it is latter - move on and succeed elsewhere.

gesman··on Self-driving cars will "cruise" to avoid paying to park
They can also be AI-trained to park in a closest spot and then peacefully leave at a first sight of enforcement.

Such information can be sent to other self-driving cars from "nearby" self driving cars :)

gesman··on Ask HN: Top three questions for a startup before accepting a job offer?
Agree. I'd say this question shouldn't be the one to weigh the decision.

Safer assumption: regardless of number of shares/options given or class of these - assume the value of these are $0 (unless these are RSU grants of publicly traded company).

gesman··on Ask HN: Top three questions for a startup before accepting a job offer?
I can answer this (are they the same share class as the founders?) for him: "NO"
gesman··on Ask HN: If my company bills me out at $165/hr what should my salary be?
In business, you don't get what you deserve.

You get what you negotiate.

gesman··on U.S. Changes Visa Process for High-Skilled Workers
As a consumer I don't corporations outsourcing manufacturing to China and then bringing back crap, charging me full price and keeping the difference.

As a patriot I'd rather pay higher price for domestically made products and know that our local workers made it.

There is a balance of course between killing imports and selling country short and flooding it with crap - but certainly China was having a party paid by north american consumers for last 3 decades.

gesman··on U.S. Changes Visa Process for High-Skilled Workers
Most people would rather read article than terms.
gesman··on U.S. Changes Visa Process for High-Skilled Workers
Import tax on crap would solve it.
gesman··on Google’s also peddling a data collector through Apple’s back door
Google and FB should partner with Huawei to complete the picture.
gesman··on Samsung Unveils 15.6-Inch Ultra-HD OLED Display for Laptops
I leveraged scaling and kind of played with different options of it.

For developers working with proportional code - unless you have super sharp eyes to scale your Sublime Editor to sub-1mm characters - i don't see it making much difference.

I physically feel comfortable with a text character of a certain minimal size. Beyond 4k it really doesn't matter how many pixels or colors are used to render the font or image on 15" screen. Making it too tiny or super-true-color-ish doesn't make much difference on a laptop screen that typically only used for "temporary" on-the-road work.

gesman··on Samsung Unveils 15.6-Inch Ultra-HD OLED Display for Laptops
The problem is that 15.6" is physically too small to leverage that much of a resolution real estate with human eye comfort.

I do high definition photography (think gigapixel panoramas) and editing anything like that on 3840x2160 laptop (high end laptop) is a suffering.

I always looking forward to get back to my 32" monitor.

gesman··on Ask HN: I have 5 % stake in a startup, how much should I work?
Because you do technical work for the founders, here's a quiz for you:

You own 5% of common shares in a startup and startup got an $10M exit. How much did you get?

A: $500K

B: $50K

C: $0

gesman··on Ask HN: How do I assert my value in salary adjustment?
WTF is "salary adjustment meeting"?

Is that a thing where you trying to prove your worth to get a raise and your boss is trying to politely convey that you're "more than ok" as is?

Create "salary adjustment meeting" on your terms. Get a [real] offer from another place and put it on your boss desk.

Salary adjustment accomplished.

Unless of course your boss will shake your hand and wish you a good luck.

gesman··on Cancelling Dropbox Pro is hard
What you said is more applicable to gym memberships or cell phone contracts where you actually sign in-person multi-page agreement for 1-2 years conscious slavery.

CC chargebacks works just fine for any online business that try to pull a quick one on you and making it artificially hard to cancel/unsubscribe/change services.

Most people choose to spend 1-2 hours online try to get hold of someone "who can solve your problem". You CC service dept can do it faster for you by transferring the problem to the other side.

I mean - it's always fair to try to solve problem by contracting vendor to have them to honor your legitimate request first. If that doesn't help [quickly and painlessly enough] - then there is a plan B in place.

gesman··on Cancelling Dropbox Pro is hard
Call your CC, claim inability to reach business to cancel and request chargeback.

This is my action plan #1 when vendor start irritating me with their support or policies.

gesman··on A command-line installer for Windows
Second that. Every single Windows proggie pollutes so many different directories including system ones as well as registry entries - so it became impossible to clean OS and leaving it cluttered with leftovers all over the places.

Windows uninstallers and cleaners became a whole industry by itself.

gesman··on What should I prepare for before moving to the Bay Area?
Beware that you won't have any credit history in USA and it will be hard to get any credit [card too] initially.
gesman··on The Market for Lemons
This theory breaks quickly when seller or buyer needs to do transaction urgently for many possible reasons.

There was a guy (in a city I used to live) who drove by a Porsche he likes and asked how much? Lady asked him if he wants to see other cars. It happened that her husband just died and she wanted to get rid of his estate worth of luxury cars that she hated. The guy borrowed money from his relatives and ended up with about dozen of rare/luxury/sports cars for pennies at a dollar.

gesman··on Ask HN: Salary/equity aside, what would your ideal job offer consist of?
Signing bonus, RSU's of publicly traded Co, relaxing WFH-friendly environment
gesman··on Sears has another chance to avoid closing down
The fish rots from the head.

Someone needs to analyze Sears' management behavior for the last few decades.

I am pretty sure some interesting patterns of ignorance and incompetence will emerge.
