gesman··on Ask HN: Which behavioral interview questions must a SWE be prepared for?
There is never disagreement - there is always "productive discussion"
gesman··on Ask HN: Which behavioral interview questions must a SWE be prepared for?
Redefine the word "failure" for them.

Convert it to "learning experience" or "amazing opportunity to discover".

This way it will be hard for them to put you down no matter how hard they'll try by their books.

You may also quote Bezos a few times and make sure they are aware you are quoting Bezos (if you're interviewing at AMZN).

And then weeks after - the next hit-and-run Amazon recruiter will keep pestering you for "new amazing opportunities" at Amazon.
gesman··on I turned my interview task for Google into a startup
This is BS.

They probably were doing interviews to satisfy ongoing visa process for already selected candidate.

And the declining everyone with lame excuse.

gesman··on Ask HN: Asking to sign an agreement claiming work I do after term of employment
"This is (typical|common|standard)" - is a typical practice to coerce/mislead people to sign one-sided contracts.

Don't do that. Kudos to you for reading the contract and questioning it's validity.

gesman··on Ask HN: Project is inexplicably receiving millions of hits. What would you do?
spam/robot hits?

Check stats carefully

gesman··on Ask HN: What do you do for global warming?
I drive with AC on and windows opened.

gesman··on Ask HN: How to deal with a senior colleague who acts like he's boss?
I don't see a real problem here.

"who thinks he's my manager and talks in a way like he knows everything"

If other person's thinking and talking irritates you - the best way is not to respond. Ignore and he moves on.

If you eager to convince him that his way of thinking is not the right one - i think you got a bigger problem.

gesman··on My Billion Dollar Mistake
I can see that most of the examples presented here is a various flavor of a typical mistake:

Building "solution that is looking for a problem".

gesman··on Ask HN: How to get a startup job if you lack resume?
Here's what always worked for me when I was younger and in your position:

- When i find technology (or company) I love - I go ahead and built something cool using that technology to gain skills.

- Then i pimp my "cool thing" on social media everywhere.

- I add this to my resume as a "work done for XYZ", where XYZ was actually my own consulting Co.

Worked like a charm.

gesman··on If a $5B Fine Is Chump Change, How Do You Punish Facebook?
Governments are not really interested to “punish” FB as long as they can regularly “milk” FB for fines.

Cost of doing business for large international corps.

gesman··on Setting Up an Ad-Blocking VPN with WireGuard and Pihole
Which VPS provider(s) offers the best cost/speed/bandwidth ratios?
gesman··on Setting Up an Ad-Blocking VPN with WireGuard and Pihole
Does it bypass "Please unblock or you won't see any content" type of web behaviors?
gesman··on Ask HN: Should you feel guilty for hacking annoying systems of control?
Took a risk by breaking the rules to develop something that would benefit that same institution.

Institution employee's appreciate that a lot.

Institution itself did not.

That however opened for me lots of opportunities outside the institution.

Looking back - breaking the rules and taking a risk (of immediate termination) was the great thing I've done.

gesman··on Ask HN: Any options traders around, are you following any UOA?
Long time ago i did that.

But for every amazing win there were tons of trades where losses would offset these wins.

That was manual work.

I still would consider it as an interesting approach to do it via API's and ML/AI models.

For every major announcement that shakes the market - there is always someone who knew and couldn't hold his hands steady. Thus option trade spikes. Fun to explore.

gesman··on Ask HN: Products that suck but you still use?
1. BMW infotainment screen/menus.

3,500+ variations of menus and multiple ways to accomplish the same thing via combinations of push-button and turn-knobs. This is becoming such a nonsense.

I ended up using my phone as GPS device and ignoring BMW anything-navigation wise.

While mechanically almost perfect car - my next car is going to be another brand just because of this bad design decisions.

2. BMW steering wheel. With weird bulges on sides and no space to rest the hand at it's lowest point.

gesman··on You're Invited to Test My Flight Booking Engine
I wonder the magic CostcoTravel does.

10 days trip to Italy, 4 stars hotel in Florence, business class flight in Air France including business class transfers both way $7700 - for 2 people - ALL above included.

Try to book this thing via Google or any other means

gesman··on Ask HN: How to become confident and take risks?
Action that goes against your current beliefs will help to instill new beliefs and overcome challenges.

So to answer "How to become confident and take risks?" - is to take risk without waiting to become confident first.

"True Power = Ability to Take Action" (Tony Robbins)

gesman··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
How do I do that?

I used one app that banned me arbitrarily by iPhone ID. I’d want to reset it

gesman··on Apple: Rotate tracking IDs on iPhone each month
I’d pay extra $100 for the iPhone where unique ID is editable. Even manually, no schedule needed. Win win for Apple and for customers.

gesman··on Google’s Sensorvault Is a Boon for Law Enforcement

gesman··on FB plans to pass your photos to advertisers, make users the stars of online ads
Business model that could make so much money that followed-up penalties for privacy violations already priced-in.

Until government steps in - this behavior will continue.

The question and blames should be directed to lawmakers - why they are hesitant to pass strong privacy laws to stop that.

Clearly FB is not going to do anything. It's way cheaper to send Mark Z. to be grilled once a year then abandon privacy violation based business models.
