gesman··on Asian countries take a stand against the rich world’s plastic waste
“This is rubbish that you know cannot be recycled, and it makes me really angry that our country has to endure this,” she said in an interview.

Were they ever forced to accept this with no say into this?

Or it's just change of mindset to stop selling their own country as a garbage dump?

gesman··on Ask HN: SEO Opportunities?
I used to do SEO (long time ago) and half of potential customers would perceive any SEO service as almost fraud and the other half would perceive it as hype.

So i'd describe business value (generate sales, leads) vs. specific method you use to achieve business value.

gesman··on Ask HN: “Contact us for pricing” nonsense
As a customer - in this case I don't want to build "relationship" with some random middleman reseller.

I know exactly what i want and rather avoid wasting time on upsells thrown at me.

I understand that sales departments strongly prefer "bait and pimp" vs. "sell and forget" strategy - but some customers and often significant ones will give business to competitors if former is the only strategy to generate revenues.

gesman··on Ask HN: “Contact us for pricing” nonsense
That's correct - the price that "someone" paid for these things is searchable and discoverable.

The problem is that to buy this thing I still have to go through the sleazy, "personalized", time wasting sales process from the beginning per each reseller to achieve [presumably] the best price.

This is like 1980's

gesman··on Ask HN: “Contact us for pricing” nonsense
Unrelated - but #2 is interesting.

Last year I was on a market for high-end car (~$100k price tag) and one dealer who had the vehicle we wanted absolutely refused to give the price via email and insisted that I had to drive 1 hr for a personal visit.

I did very fair, prolonged effort to try to get them to sell me a car to no avail.

Ended up flying 2 hrs to another city where they had a car (of a different brand) with a specs I loved. I ended up enjoying driving it back home.

Being stubborn, hard-nosed sales person clearly doesn't pay off, no matter the excuse.

gesman··on Ask HN: “Contact us for pricing” nonsense
It's more like: "how much does it cost for that specific model of a washing machine?".

You shouldn't be forced to "call for pricing".

gesman··on Ask HN: “Contact us for pricing” nonsense
To me the clear winner of business would be the site that has available pricing for base + options. Literally they can make an easy $2-$4k sale just by adding [Buy now] button, considering that the rest of the pack are playing tough sh.. to get with the prospects.

I also found one site that has "add to card to reveal pricing" - which is perfectly fine with me. The problem with that specific site is that they only carrying outdated models.

PS: this is hardware device, not SaaS or service.

gesman··on Ask HN: Why Facebook is the only company that creates their own cryptocurrency?
Crypto for FB is an elaborate tracking system that could contribute to FB ad revenue.

For smaller companies it would be hard to gain any traction.

gesman··on Saudi Arabia tracks runaway women by cellphone IMEI
Engaging security forces to chase women.

Do they also give medals for bravery for that?

gesman··on Always Own Your Platform
To add to this message:

Use existing FAANG-or-whoever platform for what it's good at - finding target audience and land them on YOUR platform. Incentivize people to join your platform.

NEVER rely 100% of your business to other guy platform. Otherwise you're on a mercy of TOS and political, religious and whatever beliefs of the other guy.

gesman··on Ask HN: Why Doesn't Microsoft Fix Skype?
Ballmer era was typical example of that MSFT stagnation and me-too always-late-to-the-party type of moves.
gesman··on Facebook plans cryptocurrency debut
Extra detailed tracking of users.
gesman··on Firefox's Enhanced Tracking Protection whitelists Google, Instagram, Amazon...
Mozilla's decision to create sneaky whitelist in the first place puts it into slimy side of things.
gesman··on Carnival Cruise Lines Hit with $20M Penalty for Environmental Crimes
$20m penalty is like "you may go but please don't do that". Same effect (which is none).
gesman··on Why aren’t more companies remote-first?
I'd say "Environment" is on of the biggest reasons.

Traffic, pollution, living costs could all be improved by government mandating and stimulating remote-first policies.

Without government taking a stance - corporate bureaucrats will insist on usual 9-5 "come to work" nonsense.

gesman··on A new round of antitrust questions can’t go well for Google
Normal, regular process of government[s] extracting extra tax dollars from large enterprises in forms of penalties/fines for whatever violations.

This will ends when Google will pay up and promise to do some [cosmetic] changes.

gesman··on Ask HN: Open-source license with special restriction from FAANG using it?
What about countless service providers, consultants and contractors that [maybe] working on [SaaS] technologies potentially providing services to FAANG?

Hard to trace/track.

gesman··on Ask HN: Best way to monetize how-to content?
Find products that are most relevant to the subject where vendor offers commissions for referral sales.

Then place adds for these products on a sidebar via your affiliate link.

gesman··on Ask HN: What improvements would you want to see to Google Maps Nearby feature

This seems to be pattern with all services that got infected with "Clippy" syndrome and keep stepping on your toes trying to predict/help/correct without being asked for. Then they pimp themselves on how advanced they are in leveraging AI.

I find myself learning to make explicit "wrong" choices so they're auto-correct me in the actual direction I want to go.

gesman··on Ask HN: What are engineers rewarded for at your company?
Move on.
gesman··on Ask HN: How important is .com for branding and customer acquisition?
Make sure .com owner doesn't hold related name copyrights and trademarks.

Then - the typical concern is that your potential customers will start typing "YourBrand".com instead of "YourBrand".blah and .com owner might as well decide to redirect traffic to competitor or do other unhelpful activities.

gesman··on Advertising as a source of dissatisfaction: cross-national evidence
"backed by billions of dollars in funding" is the key to direct "much human effort" to pretty much any cause.

Only government [regulations] can change that - but above resources are certainly partially directed to make sure this won't happen.

gesman··on Best paid email hosting service in 2019?
Your username ensures that you have no affiliation with Office 365.
gesman··on First American Financial Corp. Leaked Hundreds of Millions of Insurance Records
"First American has learned of a design defect in an application that made possible unauthorized access to customer data. At First American, security, privacy and confidentiality are of the highest priority and we are committed to protecting our customers’ information..."

Who is coming up with these statements?

If you kept royally screwing something for years that you claimed to be your "highest priority" - then what can one expect from your normal lines of business?

gesman··on Trying to succeed as an entrepreneur for 10 years. Should I quit? Anyone else?
Most frequent mistake of entrepreneur wanabees is "building solution and then looking for a problem to solve".

Try either build something for a problem you facing yourself (likely many others do too) or build something for which you know existing customers-to-be ready to pay you today to solve.

gesman··on Someone in New York is pulling emergency brakes, destroying subway commute
There is absolutely no reason to suddenly stop the train in the middle of a high speed movement between the stations.

Maybe while train still at the station. But not during the movement in the middle of tunnel.

Definitely not relying on random passenger making such decision.

This capability need to be disabled to avoid hurting people. Replace it with the button to communicate with local authorities.

gesman··on Ask HN: How to hire digital nomads nearby?
They have corps registered somewhere where you sign a contract with that corp that satisfy local regulations but the actual guy doing the job may be just sitting in the next local starbucks doing job technically illegally.

You get 1/4-1/2 of ongoing local rate for the same quality.

You be the judge of risk/reward ratio of course.

gesman··on Lenovo stole a fan's video to promote the foldable Motorola RAZR
It does but unnoticed.
gesman··on Ask HN: How to Negotiate for Job Offer?
You ask for a raise by putting a higher offer from another company to your boss desk.

Anything else is a beggar's game.

You may also bluff but you maybe called (just be aware of that). It's not unheard of to double your pay this way.
