gesman··on Lawsuit filed against GitHub in wake of Capital One data breach
It's a typical "how much we can pull to settle" lawsuit.
gesman··on Ask HN: Passive Income Suggestions?
- Web hosting

- Write rich, good quality articles comparing services that pay recurring comissions. I made $1000+ on one lousy blog post like that. One service keeps paying me monthly recurring commission for the last 15 yrs for referring them few customers.

gesman··on The Death of the Mom and Pop E-Store
Understood.

Everyone has their own priorities to choose shopping locations.

gesman··on The Death of the Mom and Pop E-Store
Anything related to electronics and photography and supplies I buy at BHPhoto.

Why - because BHPhoto:

- Has excellent support, refund and matching policies.

- Does not charge sales tax (imagine that!) if you use their Payboo card. Actually they officially charge sales tax but it gets immediately refunded so you don't pay it.

- Does not carry counterfeit junk or faked-up crap with fake reviews from shady sellers like Amazon or ebay does.

- Offer free shipping

Smaller e-tailer and retailers cannot compete with BHPhoto refund policies and cannot compete with sales tax compensation policies (thanks government for enforcing sales taxes all over).

Support and guarantee of quality products is more important to me that 2 days shipping.

No one is interested in this.

The amount of fines are balanced to ensure:

- minimal legal pushback from FB side

- quick pay.

- make sure it's repeatable process (i.e. FB do what they want to generate revenues. FTC succeeds in fining FB with accompanying political wins, bonuses and promotions that somes with it)

Rinse and repeat.

gesman··on Ask HN: What did you do when you suddenly got rich?
This:

"Any investment where they call you is lousy. If it was any good, it wouldn't have paid marketers. Avoid financial advisers who want you to trade a lot."

gesman··on The Man with the Golden Airline Ticket
"Your external hard drives need to be connected to your computer and scanned by Backblaze at least once every 30 days in order to keep them backed up"

-- Backblaze

In other words - instead of backing up your data - backblaze may delete it unless you read and understand their fine print.

I'd never deal with provider sneaking in such a nonsense behind loud claims of "unlimited anything"

gesman··on The Man with the Golden Airline Ticket
This is the story of typically bad business decision of offering anything "unlimited".

I just cancelled my account with the vendor of "unlimited" cloud storage (who would throttle uploads to their promised unlimited cloud storage to curb the effects of bad business decision) to the benefit of clear, high performance vendor.

Whenver you see "unlimited" or "unlimted forever" - question this. If nothing else - ride the wave but don't expect it to be "unlimited" or "forever".

gesman··on Vimeo Disabled My Account for Submitting HTML
This is great and fast response here.

Does Vimeo has a way for human employee to proactively (not as a result of social media shaming) look at- and unblock customer account in case it was a result of false positive?

Ban-first, handle-later is not exactly customer friendly policy.

gesman··on Ask HN: How do I find an apprentice?
If you are willing to learn Splunk (data analytics software platform) and learn to build custom apps - ping me.

Essentially custom Splunk app is something that helps customer to solve real business problem - having raw data as an input.

gesman··on Dear Agile, I’m Tired of Pretending (2018)
Sometimes it's good to give people what they ask for [insist on], even if it does not make a sense.

No anxiety needed.

Then calmly explain that the reason things didn't work out as [they] expected is because in real world things doesn't work the way they want or fantasy about.

Suggest better approach. If they refuse and keep doing [asking] the same thing all over again and expect a different result - then let it be their insanity [or anxiety], not yours.

gesman··on Ask HN: Amazon and Tax Avoidance?
Certain size.

Amazon could negotiate with countries and government entities for a personalized tax breaks due to it's potential to make or break state budgets.

Very little number of players can leverage that. There are no "tactics"

gesman··on Ask HN: Ghosted After Job Offer

For example in Financial, Healthcare and Government - 4-6 months spent to sign paperwork is considered fast :)

gesman··on Ask HN: Can we create a new internet where search engines are irrelevant?
I think there is a grain of a good idea here.

As i see it - new, "free search" internet would be a specially formatted content for each page published that will make it content easily searchable. Likely some tags within existing HTML content to comply with new "free search" standard.

Open source, distributed agents would receive notifications about new, properly formatted "free search" pages and then index such page into the public indexed DB.

Any publisher could release content and notify closest "free search" agent.

Then - just like a blockchain - anyone could download such indexed DB to do instant local searches.

There will be multiple variations of such DB - from small ones (<1TB) to satisfy small users giving just "titles" and "extracts" to large ones who need detailed search abilities (multi TB capacity).

"Free search", distributed agents will provide clutter-free interface to do detailed search for anyone.

I think this idea could easily be pickup up pretty much by everyone - everyone would be interested to submit their content to be easily searchable and escape any middlemen monopoly that is trying to control aspects of searching and indexing.

gesman··on Ask HN: have Google search results worsened?
It became extremely hard-to-impossible to find non-commercially inflated opinions about places, products and pretty much anything else.

Pretty much first 1-10 pages of google are filled with ads disguised as "organic" results.

Many of these pages are coming from adwords "sponsors".

gesman··on Which has more sales: a single long checkout form or a multi-step one?
I coming from school where single long checkout form suppose to be the best idea. Back quite a few years ago I sold onepagecheckout.com domain for a chunk of cash.

Just 2 days ago I purchased very expensive laptop via multi page checkout process which I really appreciated.

The key was to remind customer what he is buying, all options, warranty, shipping etc - make sure the complicated configuration is delivered in clear way.

Gigantic one page thing would be less welcome

gesman··on Ask HN: “Contact us for pricing” nonsense
IBM better get their act together to make your (reseller) life easier.

I used to work with IBM big data analytical tool and honestly you should get a medal for closing sales on this garbage.

gesman··on $1B for 20,000 Bay Area homes
Why don’t allow employees to WFH full time and only come to office as necessary?

Why don’t government stimulate and encourage corps who promote full time (not 1 day a week for good behavior) WFH policies?

There is absolutely no need for 2/3 of all high tech employees in Bay Area to drag their physical bodies into their statically assigned corporate chairs. Lots of meetings, conf calls and work can be done remotely.

That’s the solution that doesn’t require $1B and will take very little to implement and could have REAL impact.
