gesman··on Ask HN: Is web development still a viable career choice?
Solving [business] problems is a viable career choice.

Web development could be solving someone's essential business problem or totally non-essential for someone else.

The key is to find the customer for whom whatever you're doing will solve essential business problem.

Quite often web development is exactly what customer needs but he won't call it this way. He won't use this wording. He won't look for web developer. He won't pay for web developer.

But if you approach customer by speaking customer's language and showing customer how you can solve his problem - the result could be way more win-win and productive.

You won't hire an expert in "connecting wooden boards with nails" but you'll more likely to hire an expert in "building houses" to build your own house.

That's an idea.

gesman··on A dive into the world of MS-DOS viruses
When I was young I build small TSR .com (DOS exec extension) thing to instantly switch screen from game playing mode to serious work-BS mode with hotkey - at a first sign of boss approaching.
gesman··on AI Can Detect Alzheimer’s Disease Six Years Before a Diagnosis
"People never lie so much as after a hunt, during a war or before an election"

This quote need to be updated for modern times regarding performance of AI/ML models.

gesman··on Ask HN: Should Apple buy DuckDuckGo?
Probably would make more sense for FB.

However I'd rather see DDG become strong player on it's own gradually crippling into GOOG domination to the benefits of all.

gesman··on Apple's warning is a bad omen for Wall Street bulls
20% loss on AAPL is in order. However crowd’s sentiment is quite pessimistic.

No bull market ended with crowd being pessimistic.

IMHO smart money are gaming news outlets to score few upcoming wins at the expense of average investor

gesman··on Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors
Could someone add interesting insights to between-the-lines of Tim Cook message?
gesman··on Russian Cosmonauts Say That the Hole in the Soyuz Was Drilled from the Inside
1. Scratch marks around the hole means that panel was likely not obstructed by anything [but possibly soft material]. Stacked panels is unlikely.

2. Drill was hand-held - again due to the marks where drill bit was trying to find it's way around.

3. No any markings from pen/pencil or anything that would show that any kind of measurements were done beforehand. Which means that the hole was not part of any specific fixture/attachment or construction element.

Which strengthens hypothesis that the purpose of the hole was the hole itself. Location and/or precision of the hole was not important as much as the hole itself.

At this point precise inspection is needed to find the tool used as well as determine which person's suit/clothing/outfit/personal belongings (astronaut's or technician) contain the traces of the metal that fall off as a result of the hole drilling effort.

gesman··on A deep dive into the world of DOS viruses [video]
Back in 1990-1996 I was involved in anti-virus work for Israeli company and later on for IBM Watson Research building anti-virus technologies and software.

We had a separate, disconnected laboratory with strict rules (disk-in / no disk out!). Nasty unknown stuff being tested there.

At some time my work was to develop virtual machine (in C) capable of emulating x86 instruction set to quickly run EXEc files through it to detect if anything weird was going on.

Fun times!

gesman··on Doctors ask engineers to spend more time in the hospital before building apps
I managing projects that specifically integrating Epic data with dozens of clinical healthcare applications, HR data, medications access data as well as provider behavior data to offer security, privacy and unified monitoring capabilities for privacy and compliance officers in healthcare.

It really does helps to “eat our own dog food” and spend time in hospitals.

For example I spent few days in large New York hospital studying operations of secure drug dispensing cabinets before building solution for medications security analytics.

Tons of interesting data with valuable insights on how narcotics are secured and accessed.

gesman··on Ask HN: Advice for an aging software developer?
>> I am a decent writer

Leverage that. Create professional blog catering to enterprises. Write "how to" [solve business problems] - based on your ample experience.

Position yourself as an industry expert.

gesman··on Ask HN: How do you store photos and videos?
Crashplan $10/mo. Encrypted, off-site backup with unlimited storage, versioning and it keeps deleted files as well.

My challenge is that I shoot uncompressed RAW with my Sony A7R3 which makes it 80MB/image. And I shoot high res close to gigapixel res. panoramas with bracketing - which triples the storage (3 shots per frame for HDR blending).

So the challenge is it takes very long time to upload this stuff across my bandwidth.

gesman··on Ask HN: How do you handle your depression?
You don't handle depression. That's where everyone fails.

You come up with- and handle anything else - ideas, work, gym - whatever.

The moment you "handle depression" or "fight depression" - you feed it.

You kill it by lack of attention to "depression". You kill it by focusing attention to anything else.

Most effective is helping other people with whatever they need. That's because it de-focuses attention from your own needs and when "you are depressed" - that would be your depression.

Go, find someone who needs help and save someone's day. Or life. It could be person, place, animal or good cause.

gesman··on The Machine Learning Race Is Really a Data Race
THIS.

I was just saying to our partner (as well as to my wife!) how lucky we are to work on Healthcare solutions. We have access to data about medications, opioids, patients and physicians behaviors that so very little of others (who can have any clue about data analytics) has.

The realization of sitting on a goldmine of impossible-to-access-data + capability of developing cutting edge analytics solutions that could change the world is the best place to be.

gesman··on FCC fines Swarm $900K for unauthorized satellite launch
I'd modify the fine by adding: $1m/per month while your stuff is polluting the space orbit.
gesman··on Ask HN: Am I unhirable?
Companies are not looking to hire you (nothing personal) but merely to support some existing employee immigration routine which requires hiring company to prove there are no local, appropriately skilled candidates available.

Tons of these job offers are not really job offers but are merely necessary immigration steps for someone who already hired.

Guaranteed rejection for all unaware off-the-street applicants regardless of skills and experience.

Hard to judge because resulted image is tiny - but looked good.

gesman··on Ask HN: How to survive/fight mafia states?
>> I have an independent income source: working remotely for Western companies.

Grow your income to levels which affords you to move into friendlier surroundings.

Also - your post is too involved into being pissed off by things you cannot control.

Build upon things you can control and evolve from there.

gesman··on Ask HN: What are job interview questions that can be used to reject regardless
"Have you ever used company computer to search for information unrelated to your job?"

Yes => We cannot hire you

No => Liar! We cannot hire you.

gesman··on Boeing 737 Passenger Jet Damaged in Possible Midair Drone Hit
Front shot of the dent shows no signs of small/sharp sub-dents or deep scratches within the main dent that would've been caused by hard object such as drone. Which kind of steers thinking toward heavy and soft object that planed collided with.

"Is goose going to be okay?"

gesman··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo

duck.com!

gesman··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo

I never remembered whether to type duckgogo.com or duckduckgo.com - either of them i had to type twice due to normal fat-fingering :)

Norton commander
gesman··on Ask HN: Why did I get printed the wrong boarding pass?

My last reaction would be to ask hacker news.

gesman··on Ask HN: As a Startup, how do you break into big corp?

gesman··on Ask HN: Approached to be consultant for hedge fund research group
Take a retainer.

Unless they are operating from Nigeria and are asking a small fee to initiate wire transfer of retainer.

gesman··on Ask HN: What regulations apply to my company? How do we know we're compliant?
You always non-compliant.

The task is to get you more compliant than the guy next door - so he'll be an easier target.

The way to get there depends on industry you're in.
