gerland··on The New York Times' first article about Hitler's rise is stunning
Have you even read this quora answer? It pretty much tells outright that the nazi party was not right wing.

Edit: I would recommend less Twitter and Netflix and more L. Wittgenstein.

Depends how you define right wing. Were the nazis totalitarian? Yes, but so was the CCCP. Were they socialists. Definetely yes. Were they catholic, or even christian. Not at all. If you say that the republicans are right wing, then it's hard to put nazis on the same plate. The meaning of the term right-wing changed a lot in the last 100 years. If you trace back to Spain during the Franco reign, then you will quickly realize, that a lot of the people fighting for republic were in fact far left (including notably some anarchists). Basically the whole republic concept was considered to be a lef-wing thing (and it was for the time). Were nazis right-wing? At that time yes. Are nazis right-wing in the modern meaning of right-wing? Definitely not, those two have nothing in common.

The problem with far left (or far right) formations, is that their biggest oponent is not the far right. It's the moderate left. Almost no one from far left starts outright supporting far right, but a lot of people "seep in" to more certer oriented views as they age. Also the only way to get into places of power in a "attention economy" is to be more radical than all the rest. Most people do not have any political views at all. The "silent majority" is a myth. Those are people that will just bend to anything that is mainstream, while complaining about this at home. The reason for that is that they do not have an integrated political view that is sufficienty important. It's just a third rate thing, while for the radicals it's the most important thing in the world. Political environment is developing based on movement. If there is no shift, there is no place for people to make careers, that's why no one who is seriuous about being a politician will stick to defending the center. An attack position will always yield better result than a defensive one. You do not have to have answers to all the possible problems, in reality you do not have any answers at all, just prove that your oponent does not have answers to SOME problems. It's a game that we cannot avoid playing and a game that makes everyone lose in the end.

There is nothing more than one can say about Evola that wasn't said before. You can pretty much go to his page on Wikipedia and the first few paragraphs sound like a hit piece. I will say that everything is true, even the things that I know for sure are not. It does not matter, in the end there he is, popular as never before. "The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is."

inb4 > Churchill was a fascist, let's tear down his statues.

gerland··on Propaganda, censorship, and surveillance are all attributes of monopoly
Yes, Evola. The first few chapters about nihilism are probably the most relevant. Keep in mind that if you want to strawman this on, it's very easy. Filter out the Kali Yuga, etc. stuff if this is not to your liking and the rest is still pretty informative.

Maybe it was not such a good idea to demolish the warriors caste after all? It seems that the 3rd state has merged with, or rather became, the aristocracy. Taking into account that the peasants defended them against the neo-warrior-caste in the last Great War, and that their lavish lifestyle comes greatly from taxation of the peasants, the long noses should hang for a long time now.
gerland··on U.S. House's antitrust report hints at break-up of big tech firms: lawmaker
Breaking companies at a moment in history at which most of the worlds largest player are tightly coupled with their respective goverments agenda? It seems to me that someone here is still convinced that US can play by "free market" rules. Wrong. It could do it when it was effectively the only player in the world. I do not believe that innovation and flexibility can overcome sheer power in a world when everything can be freely emulated or bought out. Don't get me wrong - I would laugh to tears if Google would be broken up. Still I would wonder what will take this space.
gerland··on Tesla dissolves its PR department
You know what else is dangerous? An inner circle kabal that can destroy anyone with an allegation that will get retracted 6 months later. A group of people beyond any control and that suffers no consequences. Maybe also a group of people that understands only doublespeak at this point. I have not love for EM, but at least he is in a position in which he can stand against their attacks.

No.
gerland··on The Gay Marriages of a Nineteenth-Century Prison Ship
You seem to be trying to give me an honest advice, which is nice and I appreciate it, but you don't seem to get the point - you do not have to, and should not, feel ok with everything that happens externally. That's not something that needs fixing. I do not need a cope mechanism. There are real things that I'm dissatisfied with and I have the right to feel this way. I can rationalise it and go to some kind of therapy, but that's not the point. I have enough "terapy" sessions in my job, that's precisely what I'm dissatisfied about. It's a bit annoying and redundant most of the year, but after the pride month you just want to never hear about this topic anymore in your life.

Imagine that someone comes to you and says that you should kneel before some random black people, because that's how you are supposed to react to the BLM narrative. You might genuiely care about the minorities and still do not agree with the BLM narrative, or just plainly do not see the point of the performances themselves. You might feel very bad about doing this, which is completely natural. There are a lot of reasons why you would not want to do this. Should you go to a therapy to be able to shame yourself more easily? All due respect, it feels that someone who suggests something like this would need the therapy more.

gerland··on The Gay Marriages of a Nineteenth-Century Prison Ship
It's very hard to avoid getting bombarded by this. You would have to completely avoid processing any information stream. Taht would still leave you with all the events and initiatives in the office. I don't really see why I should stick a pride flag on my desk and it is frowned upon if I don't. It's not a matter of therapy. I'm perfectly fine, there is a problem with people pushing politics down your throat even if you already accepted it. I cannot even imagine how people that have different opinions handle it.
gerland··on The Gay Marriages of a Nineteenth-Century Prison Ship
Thanks for taking your time to answer, even if I can't agree with everything that you said.

So with any external thing I should basically go to a psychologist? Is it so werid that I'm tired of all the preaching. You cannot evan say that you are tired. Every preacher is autmatically assigned a status of invincibility. Say something to the preacher - you are the offender now.

gerland··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
I don't really buy the "expert beginner" thing. How does it relate to having the "T-shaped" skills? One is the frowned upon and the other is desired for some reason.

The reality of programming is that most often than not you do not need to be an expert to do a job well. I would even say that being an expert programmer is all about sticking to only basic things. The more you try to be smart and "on the edge" the more you or someone who inherits your code will fail. If I would get 1$ for every trendy abstraction or framework, then I would not retire, but probably could buy a new PC or something.

IMHO it all boils down to ego trips. Everyone thinks he is the superstar, ninja or 10x and everyone else just a poser. "I'm the smartest one" should be the motto of IT. If you think that you are the one that can push the whole community forward then you are probably delusional. I think I'm a moderately advanced developer, but some of the people that I met along the way were just crazy smart, highly productive and - here is the surprise - nowhere near the top. This delusion of grandeur is especially common in people that are pampered in the business. If I would name them, then I would be instantly downvoted, but just stop and try to imagine what people I mean. I'm guessing you won't have any problem.

In the end, your project does not need you to be an expert, your team does not need it, the business does not as well. Only your ego.

Long live the "expert beginner"!

gerland··on My dad launched the quest to find alien intelligence
Each time the civilisation collapsed it's demise was brought by much stronger technological means. We might get to a point in time in which a a full restoration is not possible.

One of such outcomes is of course an atomic war, but I'm more concerned with the receurring "underdog revolts".

Historically the elites are always getting more stagnant and the line between the capable and the mass is blurring. Most of the revolutions were started not by the workers, but by the "middle class". Basically at some point the "almost haves" convince themselves that they are more capable than the current structure and they pull the workers into the madness. Look at all the ancient military revolts, at countries that fell to fascism or communism.

So far it always begun with losers taking up the tools of their masters. Things that they were not capable enough to create in the first place. The winners create the tools of their own destruction. Communists took over the "means of production", christianity the fruits of enlightment.

At this point of time, if the mass surveilance system and the information brokers fall into the wrong hands it may be impossible to recover, even if there is no military conflict. One might argue that it already happened to large degree.

First, I don't know what people I belong to in your little fantasy, but please be so kind as to share.

Second, there is a difference between a space in which you can say anything and a place that you can say only the things you are allowed to say. In the first case you have a public discourse, in the second you have public outrage. Essentially HN is becoming a safe space for woke people.

Do you not really see anything wrong with stalking people online, or for that matter even in real life, just because they have different opinions than you?

gerland··on For black CEOs in Silicon Valley, humiliation is a part of doing business
I say you should hire the people who hve the skills and do the work, not trying to hire 1/8 blacks just because. If I would guess, I would say that the reason for that disparity is the average economical status and environment. I've lived among the white trash long enough to know that most of them won't go anywhere, and it's not entirely their own fault. Why should a struggling white kid have it any different than a black kid? That's just pure racism. Trying to make every poverty stricken black successful will have the same effect that trying to elevate all the poor in every other race. Why should it be reserved for some special priviledge group?

Don't put words in my mouth, you sound like CNN "journalist".
