geowwy··on The 40% Keyboard
I had the opposite experience. My 60% keyboard ruined my hands with RSI.

I strongly recommend Xah Lee's advice to anyone suffering from RSI: http://xahlee.info/kbd/ergonomic_keyboards_index.html

In my opinion the ideal setup for people people with RSI is a 80% keyboard, a seperate number pad, and a programmable keypad for commonly used shortcuts.

geowwy··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for the next 50 years?
WRT technology, I expect a technological plateau within our lifetime.

In geo-politics, USA will not be the sole superpower anymore:

* China will continue to regain its historical prominence/prestige

* EU will seek more and more independence from the US

* Turkey will look to form its own union of states in the Eastern Mediterranean (kind of a neo-byzantine/neo-ottoman empire)

* Brazil and India will continue to do well

* Russia and Iran's future not so certain

I think the transition will probably be relatively smooth, but we'll have to wait and see.

Isn't this what <link rel="prefetch"> and <link rel="prerender"> are for? Or am I missing something?
geowwy··on Gridsome – A Vue.js static site generator
If you're looking for a Static Site Generator: consider building your own.

You can build your own static site generator in an afternoon. It's super simple to do and you avoid all the complexity of these off-the-shelf static site frameworks.

A few examples of my own:

  * A blog made with makefile, m4, multimarkdown, and scss
  * A personal website made with shell scripts and php
  * A business website made with ruby, rake and erb
geowwy··on Xi Jinping's daughter has returned to US to resume studies at Harvard
If your family is powerful enough admissions exams don't matter.
geowwy··on The Balloon Boy Hoax Solved
Yes.

He asked his kid to hide in the attic, but instead the kid hid in the basement.

When he couldn't find his kid in the attic he assumed the kid was actually in the balloon, so he freaked out and started calling the media and authorities.

I'm not sure whether he originally planned to get the authorities involved or not. In any case he planned a hoax but it backfired on him big time.

geowwy··on Dealing with China Isn’t Worth the Moral Cost
Due process and a trial has not done Americans any good because the laws are unjust.
geowwy··on Dealing with China Isn’t Worth the Moral Cost
I don't agree. The Saudis have been extremely effective at pushing Wahhabism across the world. In many places traditional (usually more tolerant) forms of Islam have basically disappeared.
geowwy··on Dealing with China Isn’t Worth the Moral Cost
Maybe I'm a cynic but I don't believe that's the real issue. We're friendly with plenty of countries that do far worse. I think it's about economics and strategic interests.
geowwy··on Dealing with China Isn’t Worth the Moral Cost
It's scary how effective the US and China are at propaganda warfare. It seems like only yesterday everyone was on friendly terms, now we hate each other.

As someone with family all across Asia and the West I really hope the US and China can resolve their disputes soon. This is really not a nice position for us to be in.

geowwy··on Ask HN: What Happened to GitHub's Atom?
The biggest contributors stopped contributing around 2016. It seems like they achieved what they wanted and put it in maintenance mode.

geowwy··on How to Succeed as a Poor Programmer
Yeah, I'm not saying it wasn't useful at the time, just that it's not useful now. As opposed to learning SQL or shell scripting which will probably be useful my entire career.
geowwy··on How to Succeed as a Poor Programmer
He is right though – new tech nearly always disappears.

Example: Learning CoffeeScript was a total waste of time. Learning JQuery helped me for a few years, but now JQuery is basically useless to me.

Based on past experience, I strongly suspect the same will happen with React, Rust and a bunch of other new exciting tech. There are countless examples besides the ones I mentioned.

But on the other hand, the time I put into mastering SQL or Unix will probably continue benefiting me for the rest of my career. Even C will continue to benefit me, even though it'll only ever be a small part of my job.

So I would modify his rule: Avoid Learning Anything New – Learn Something Old

geowwy··on How TikTok censors videos that do not please Beijing
I agree there's not the blatant censoring of info, but the government does put a lot of resources into controlling public opinion. Troll farms are a big thing, as well as exploiting connections in big tech and the media. There are also a lot of NGOs and political parties doing the same thing.

Not so sure about that. Silicon Valley has some crazy ties to American intelligence agencies.

  > After all, most Christians ignore a huge swathe of very
  > clear, very explicit rules in the Bible. Like eating pork,

  > the Bible.
The law against eating pork was only put in place for the nation of Israel. Non-Israelites are not obligated to avoid pork – even the ones that follow Yahweh. Jews and Christians both agree on this.

There is actually a whole group of people who believe in Orthodox Jewish teaching but don't adopt a Jewish identity or follow Jewish laws. The Rabbis teach them that it's enough just to follow the 7 Laws of Noah – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Laws_of_Noah

geowwy··on Germany's Vanishing Monasteries
Not sure why you're being downvoted. It's definitely plausible that Traditionalist Catholics will become the majority of practicing Catholics, as well as a small but growing minority in Europe.

The situation is very different. What @skissane says makes sense.

geowwy··on Kiss – A Linux distribution with a focus on “less is more”
It was definitely intended to be a pinup girl leaning over and doing the stereotypical kiss. It's not a matter of interpretation.
geowwy··on Kiss – A Linux distribution with a focus on “less is more”

  > That logo makes it a non-starter in any organization I've seen in the last decade.
Could be what they're going for. There's a subset of the free software movement who are actively opposed to politically correct corporate culture.
geowwy··on Kiss – A Linux distribution with a focus on “less is more”
Stereotypical pinup girl leaning forward to kiss you, I assume.
geowwy··on Australia concluded China was behind hack on parliament, political parties

  > China does not respond to the normal stimulus / protest that democratic, human-rights based nations do.
I wonder how you see them as any different to the US? The US wasn't scrambling to meet the demands of the Occupy Movement.

I guess there was the brutality of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, but Tiananmen is the exception in the history of Chinese protests, just like the Kent State Massacre was in the US.

geowwy··on California bans private prisons

  > I think things like prison, corporal punishment, exile, etc., are good deterrents but they're horrible at reintegration
Not sure I understand. Corporal punishment doesn't have a problem with re-integration because no one is removed from society, and the whole point of exile is you will never be re-integrated into society. Only prison has to deal with the problem of how to re-integrate people.
geowwy··on California bans private prisons
A lot of the times we would just do nothing. Marijuana possession doesn't need punishment for example.

Otherwise there are a tonne of options from before prison became the norm. Community service, restitution, fines, public shaming, exile, corporal punishment, capital punishment. Some more acceptable today than others.

geowwy··on California bans private prisons
Well done California. Hopefully this is a step towards abolishing the prison system.
geowwy··on Hong Kong Protests: The most striking illustrations from the movement so far
Yeah. It surprises me anyone thinks the French Revolution was a good thing.
geowwy··on Hong Kong Protests: The most striking illustrations from the movement so far
There is a nativist/anti-mainlander/anti-mandarin-speaker aspect to the protests that isn't being talked about by Western media. Once you realise that it starts to become less clear cut.
geowwy··on Hong Kong Protests: The most striking illustrations from the movement so far
If you support Hong Kong's struggle for democracy, please don't turn your back on Puerto Rico's.

The US has denied Puerto Ricans democratic rights for almost 120 years now.
