geospeck··on Should You Buy a ThinkPad?
> pre-owned ex-corporate ThinkPads are sold for very little

Anyone knows a website in Germany that sells these Thinkpads? TIA

geospeck··on Emacs appearances in pop culture
Yukihiro Matsumoto is an Emacs user as well[1]. He is also the original author of ruby-mode.el[2].

There is also a native implementation of Clojure on the Common Language Runtime (CLR) https://github.com/clojure/clojure-clr
geospeck··on SBCL: A Sanely-Bootstrappable Common Lisp (2008) [pdf]
Do you have a link to the proposal and the discussion? I am quite interested to see the implementation details. Thanks!

I also found this blog post useful for using Vim with Common Lisp https://susam.net/lisp-in-vim.html
geospeck··on Zippers: Making Functional "Updates" Efficient (2010)
Here[1] is a nice breakdown of Zippers in Clojure. I am not the author of the post but I found it very helpful when I wanted to learn more about Zippers in Clojure. There are some nice illustrations as well.

geospeck··on I Love Ruby
> My Ruby projects often have a wrapper that reloads code and puts me in pry prompt. I can edit code and introspect objects live as the code changes.

That sounds very interesting! Can you please share the wrapper that does all that magic? Thanks!

geospeck··on Lua: The Little Language That Could
mruby[1] fits that category too. It can be used with H2O[2] server as well. There was a discussion here a couple of months ago regarding some use cases[3].

geospeck··on Implementing a distributed key-value store on top of implementing Raft in Go
Thanks for the post!

Another great blog post series about implementig Raft in Go that I found is this one https://eli.thegreenplace.net/2020/implementing-raft-part-0-...

geospeck··on Emacs 29 is nigh
I am not quite sure how this particular feature will look but Emacs can be already used as a SQL client. Here is a short demo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D97vDu_BhwA

Here is an introduction blog[1] and the related mode[2]

When I started using Paredit I found "The Animated Guide to Paredit"[1] very helpful. It basicaly demonastrates some of the most useful commands in short videos.

geospeck··on Hoppscotch: Open-source alternative to Postman
> I want something much simpler, so I use VS code with a "REST Client" plugin

I follow the same approach. Emacs, Verb[0] and org-mode. An alternative to Verb would be restclient.el[1] but I like Verb more because it works as an extension to org-mode which is great for documentation.

geospeck··on Ruby 3.1
No news about Ractors! The new concurrency facilities that Ruby 3.0 introduced. Anyone has an insight if there was any further development on that front?
geospeck··on YJIT: Building a New JIT Compiler for CRuby
That's very interesting! It seems that big Ruby shops like Shopify and Stripe are investing a lot on improving Ruby's performance. Here is a tweet from Stripe's CEO regarding the performance of their custom Ruby compiler https://twitter.com/patrickc/status/1410269843585069056?lang...
geospeck··on Optimising Common Lisp to try and beat Java and Rust on phone encoding 2/2

geospeck··on Java on Truffle – Going Fully Metacircular
> I wish ClojureCLR weren't dead too

Is there any reason for saying that? Checking the commits history on Github[1], the project seems still alive.

geospeck··on The Future of Clojure
One thing that I would like to mention as a Clojure newbie is the community. I am super impressed by how much friendly they are. I mainly use /r/clojure on Reddit and the Clojurians on Slack.
geospeck··on Rails Concerns: To Concern or Not to Concern
That is very interesting approach! I’ve never worked on a project that doesn’t use AR relationships e.g has_many... at all.

Do you have an example app or a blog post exposing this pattern? It would be very interesting to see how this actually works. Thanks you very much for bringing this up!

geospeck··on Under Deconstruction: The State of Shopify’s Monolith

geospeck··on How Gov.uk Notify reliably sends text messages to users
One interesting thing that I read the other day from a lead developer at Gov.uk was about how fast they managed to built a service within a couple of hours[1]

What I also really like about Gov.uk is that they seem to have their apps open source[2]

geospeck··on Show HN: Meta book recommendations from Ask HN threads
I am trying to build something similar and I was wondering if there are any legal issues with showing content from the source website into mine, in your case for example the content is the user's comments.

In this page https://www.ycombinator.com/legal/ under the Intellectual Property Rights is written:

Except as expressly authorized by Y Combinator, you agree not to modify, copy, frame, scrape, rent, lease, loan, sell, distribute or create derivative works based on the Site or the Site Content, in whole or in part, except that the foregoing does not apply to your own User Content (as defined below) that you legally upload to the Site.

I really wonder if I need to ask for permission from each website about showing some text from their website into mine?

geospeck··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file

Do you mind sharing how you have setup Emacs to do that? Thanks!

geospeck··on Tmux Tutorial
Another useful source for learning Tmux that helped me a lot is the free videos from Upcase[1]

They even show how to use Tmux with Vim which is my favourite setup

geospeck··on Running GitHub on Rails 6.0
You can choose to skip them

  rails new app_name --skip-action-cable --skip-action-text etc...
Most of these libraries can be skipped, just type:

rails new -h see all the options
Edit: in case you decide later on that you need them you can install them as you described with `gem actiontext` etc...
