geori··on Ask HN: Do you regret taking investment?
Definitely not. I've got kids and was only able to quit my job and start working full time as CTO of my startup after we raised seed funding. That being said, an A,B, and C round is different. Seed should give you enough runway to see if your initial idea gets product market fit. Future funding is fuel for the rocket ship. It lets you see if you can scale up sales and marketing around the product.
geori··on Show HN: Z80 Compiler Visualization
Ahh. I remember doing lots of TI82/83 calculator programming in Z80 and never considering using a C to Z80 compiler since it was so suboptimal. C was considered slow and a memory hog. Most of these (other than the sprite routine) aren't that bad. Every byte counted when you only had 26KB free.
geori··on What's The End Goal for Wealthfront and Betterment? (2016)
LOL! This is exactly why Wall St can't make early stage investments.

Clearly these are speculative bets on Wealthfront being as large as a mutual fund. The fact that the author doesn't see this means they're overvaluing a mutual fund manager and thinking that an algorithm can't come close to matching that performance. These startups have two major cost advantages over incumbents: 1) no researchers 2) no salespeople. They have higher profitability, so they'll be better equipped to spend on sales & marketing to achieve fast growth. This leads me to think that at least one of these companies is going to grow to the size of a large mutual fund and "WIN".

geori··on Ask HN: How are you doing performance appraisal at your startup?
First, I do weekly 1x1s with my directs and give feedback and regularly do career planning in them. You can't wait to have these types of conversations only once or twice a year.

Performance Reviews were definitely not a waste of time and a very important carrot that motivated the company. they were great when things were going well and my startup was growing, but when we started to have churn and laid off half of the company they were less important. They were even less important when we had another round of layoffs after that. I would send very mixed signals at an annual review if I couldn't give anyone a raise and couldn't offer them a way up the corporate ladder, even for top performers. E.g., "You're doing awesome work but all we can do is let you keep your job." Furthermore, equity grants would have been meaningless. I had multiple employees say tell me they didn't think the stock was worth anything, since the odds of an exit had dwindled. Growth had stalled, so they cared purely about salary and career path. I spent a lot of 1x1s talking about what they wanted to do after working for me and helped them plan it out and make progress towards a new goal.

geori··on MailChimp’s founders built the company slowly by anticipating customers’ needs
Yeah. I'm a big fan of MailChimp, but this is a clear case of survivorship bias. We have a ton of detailed reporting (CrunchBase, edgar.gov, startup accelerators, Mattermark, etc) on VC backed companies but very little on non VC. How do you get a detailed list of bootstrapped companies? Even if you did have a comprehensive list (Sec of State in each state), how are you going to differentiate amongst tech startup, lifestyle business, traditional new business, and service business? Angelist has some info, but it is a platform for fundraising.
geori··on Release of Infinity for Game Boy Color in Unfinished Form
Congrats Justin and team! I love seeing this game finally get released. A lot of hard work went in to putting it together. Plus, it's great to see a former TI Calculator hacker bringing back the nostalgia of old games. Long live Joltima! :)
geori··on Tech job listings are down 40% on several job boards
This might be happening because Angelist is free and has great candidates.
geori··on To write better code, read Virginia Woolf
I did the things you recommend (CS, MBA, 2y traveling) but learned much more running a startup. You really just need experience with autonomy and exposure to smart people.
geori··on How good is your French accent?
Grading is definitely on a curve. My accent is terrible and I'm getting 100% on the native speech.
geori··on Why Shitty Products Survive and Thrive
MS Office (specifically Excel) is not a shitty product. There's a reason why it has a larger monopoly with finance types Wall Street than Google does with search. Power users can quickly build powerful financial models with it.
geori··on Magic Leap raises $827M in Series C
If this turns out to be the successor to smartphones, then these comments will look like people laughing at the Instagram acquisition.
geori··on ADP Sues Zenefits for Defamation
Your local insurance salesperson probably has less bargaining power than Zenefits, so your rates with them could be higher.
geori··on Ask HN: Which cloud do you use, and why?
Rackspace

- pricing and offerings are similar to AWS

- they answer the phone when you have problems

This also solves the peak load problem, since you can pay for power at night and run off of your giant Tesla battery in the garage during the day.

geori··on Unofficial Demake Port Of Super Smash Bros Arrives On TI-83/84 Calculators
The speed of that dynamic scaling sprite routine is ridiculous. I'm very impressed. I've written 4x4, 8x8, 12x12 and 16x16 sprite routines on the 83, but had never considered dynamic scaling. My hat's off to Hayleia and Badja.

geori··on Data Visualization with JavaScript
same here. Great presentation on getting graph viz working in sigma and d3.
geori··on Ask HN: Where to find startup culture?
There are some Tech Startups in the bible belt. There's stuff going on in Atlanta and Austin. And my startup, EdgeTheory, is located in Jackson, Mississippi. Yes, it is harder to find like minded people in the South, but they're out there.

As other commenters mentioned, I suggest finding meetups in your area or driving to a larger city and attending one if there are none where you live.

geori··on Poll: How long have you been programming?
TI Basic -> Z80 ASM here too! Love it. I wrote a lot of stuff for the TI-83.

I was out of coding for about 10 years (traveled, went to business school, worked in finance). Then I got back into it by moonlighting for a startup. Now I'm CPO of a startup and write backend stuff in Ruby. I rarely get to use any of my old ASM coding chops.
