georgeott··on VW CEO is out
This entire episode is amazing. How did they think they wouldn't get caught?!
georgeott··on AWS US East is experiencing high error rates on several services
"Until this incident is resolved, you might be unable to open new support tickets with us."

Maybe they should host the ticket system on a separate provider?

georgeott··on AWS US East is experiencing high error rates on several services
Pocket just came back up also. Issue might be resolved?
georgeott··on The End of Retirement
This. Even just 5%, compounded over decades, can turn into A LOT of savings.
georgeott··on Lower Cost S3 Storage Option and Glacier Price Reduction
I'm currently storing my entire photo collection of about 50GB and ~20,000 photos. It cost me about $3 to upload the entire library. I pay around 50 cents a month for storage. YMMV, but I'm very happy with it.
georgeott··on Amazon Fire TV Gaming Edition
Another cool feature of the existing Fire TV is that you can start a music app, hit the home button, and then play a game, while listening to the music app. Just make sure to turn off in game music.
georgeott··on Amazon Fire TV Gaming Edition
I don't think so. It says "Optional" for the voice remote.

The new gaming remote DOES have a voice button also, though. So you may not need the regular remote.

georgeott··on Amazon Fire TV Gaming Edition
Keep in mind, this is the Gaming Bundle. It does not come with the standard remote, just the game controller.

They also sell the Fire TV, with the normal voice remote for $99.

georgeott··on Amazon Fire TV Gaming Edition
I own a FTV, and I love it. You can side-load anything you want, as long as you can find the .apk file.

georgeott··on The Ad Blocking Fight Is Over
This site just shows a blank page when my ad blocker is on.
georgeott··on Lower Cost S3 Storage Option and Glacier Price Reduction
There are Glacier clients that allow you to manage the "Restore Speed" so you don't get hit with ridiculous price hikes.

Glacier is PERFECT if you just need to restore a photo or document, and not the entire repo.

georgeott··on Why Ad blocking is devastating to the sites you love
I think we will need to find another way to support sites.

Allowing a random 3rd party to run untrusted scripts on my system is not the answer.

georgeott··on Ask HN: Great nontech book that you read recently?
"The Potato Factory: The Australian Trilogy" - Bryce Courtenay
georgeott··on Ask HN: Why don't publishers serve ads from their domains to thwart ad-blockers?
I've heard some Ad networks are asking clients to setup reverse-proxys, so they can make the image APPEAR to come from same origin. It's getting crazy!
georgeott··on Ask HN: Why don't publishers serve ads from their domains to thwart ad-blockers?
Who counts the impressions, to pay the ad client?
georgeott··on 37 rental cars – 2 days – 185,000 miles earned
I think adding "Limit: One rental per day" would have solved this problem.
georgeott··on Verizon to Buy AOL for $4.4B
They owned a closed "Walled Garden" version of the internet. Once the open internet took off, AOL was doomed.
georgeott··on Leaked Lyft Document Reveals a Costly Battle with Uber
Uber charges the same $5 after 5 mins, if cancelled.
georgeott··on Super Cheap Data Backups with Amazon Glacier Storage
I was under the impression if you can retrieve the data slowly, the price goes WAY down.

georgeott··on Amazon Reveals the Robots at the Heart of Its Cyber Monday Operation
How difficult would it be for another robot company to build similar technology? Patents are also most likely an issue.
georgeott··on Permissions asked for by Uber Android app
Exactly. As soon as they removed FB messaging from the app, I simply removed it, and use the mobile site.
georgeott··on Permissions asked for by Uber Android app
Pro Tip: Unintall the Uber App, and use m dot uber dot com inside Chrome.
georgeott··on Why does Outlook map Ctrl+F to Forward instead of Find?
F3 and CTRL-E both work as FIND for me in Outlook 2010.
georgeott··on Can anyone tell me what these services do?
January to September? That is a LONG time to answer 2 simple questions. I fear the lawyers had to get involved.
georgeott··on T-Mobile Rocks
Another very happy Ting.com customer here. We paid $150 a month for our 2 smartphones on Sprint. Now we pay $50 a month for both on Ting. Sure, we use wi-fi as much as possible. Our data use is 1gb per month. Could not be happier saving $100 a month!
georgeott··on The new Galaxy Note 3 is region-locked
I could not agree more. I also have a Brother Laser, and it's been rock solid for years. Inkjets were always a waste of money, ink, and time!
georgeott··on The new Galaxy Note 3 is region-locked
Reminds me of my Brother Printer/Fax/Scanner. Once ANY of the 4 ink carts is empty, you can no longer do ANYTHING. No scanning to a SD card, no outbound faxes, etc, until you replace the ink. Of course, there is a simple "tape over the holes" hack to get around this, but it's still lame.
georgeott··on Costa Concordia: Stricken ship set upright in Italy
I was specifically referring to the nightmarish working/living conditions of most ship-breaking yards. Bangladesh, etc.
georgeott··on Costa Concordia: Stricken ship set upright in Italy
>> the ship will be scrapped, but it had to be moved in a proper place first.

You mean a POORER PLACE first?
