We're hiring at Adobe | Behance in NYC. We're a diverse team of people passionate about our craft, our product, and open source. https://www.behance.net/careers
georgecalm··on Git Town – A high-level command line interface for Git
Another great alternative that I use every day is https://hub.github.com, especially if you work with GitHub.
georgecalm··on Show HN: Ora.pm – New task management service
The signup experience was great! I liked the walkthrough. I'd recommend focusing a bit more on front-end performance though. Dragging cards, for example, was a quite sluggish. Especially compared to Trello. Since that's the thing that we do the most on a storyboard, it makes me want to use your product a bit less. You're also pushing >3MB of JS to the client. Consider trimming that down a bit.
georgecalm··on NPM – Better Search Is Here

georgecalm··on Show HN: React Cellblock. A grid where components respond to column size
Awesome work! What browsers does it support?
georgecalm··on Free, three-month trial of Apple Music now available
FYI: Apple Music requires iTunes 12.2 and its download page currently says: "iTunes 12.2 is coming soon."
georgecalm··on GitBook: A modern publishing toolchain
I really like the the simplicity of the plugin system. Adding (Ka)TeX support, for example, was just a matter of few clicks. Creating plugins looks straight-forward too; you can extend the site or filter / decorate text. This makes me want to use GitBook. If they don't support an idea I know I'd be able to write a plugin for it. And with time and their steady growth I probably wouldn't even have to. Sure, it's very new and has bugs, but I think this has a lot of potential.

> Ken: lary and sergey came by tonight...

> Ken: p.s. one of larrys comments was "why isnt function spelled func?

> Rob: fine with me. seems compatible with 'var'

> Rob: anyway we can always say, "larry said to call it 'func'"

georgecalm··on GitHub's new text editor leaked on Twitter
Pretty crazy! Here are a few interesting plugins in there already:

  - vim-mode
  - fuzzy-finder
  - emmet (aka Zen Coding)
  - solarized-dark-syntax (heh)
  - snippets (check)
  - language-* (check; so many; awesome)
  - timecop (tracking where time is spent in the editor)
  - editor-stats (graph your mouse / keyboard activitiy)
  - ...
georgecalm··on CSS Variables in Firefox Nightly
Does anyone know if there's a polyfill for CSS variables out there? Possibly a library that creates plain old CSS out of the one that uses variables. It would be useful until this is rolled out to other browsers.
georgecalm··on Best Practices for Designing a Pragmatic RESTful API
Awesome points; didn't know about the Link header (RFC5988).

Regarding pagination: a few years ago I switched to using "skip" and "limit", instead of "page" and "per_page" or a variation of the two. Instead of thinking about pages (an abstract idea) it forces me to think about the concrete list of objects being requested from the resource, how many of those I want and how many to skip from the start; making it easier to reason about pagination (at least for me).

georgecalm··on Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot FAQs
First, there isn't enough technical info about how the feature is implemented for me to not be worried about it affecting me in terms of security and bandwidth; and from my subjective experience so far, I don't trust Comcast enough to accept their claim of no / minimal impact.

Second, the way I see it, Comcast is asking us to donate our resources (bandwidth, etc.), as minimal as they may be. Now, I don't mind donating to a good cause. I do, on the other hand, mind being forced to do so, without my consent; and especially so when a company is profiting from it ($3 daily access pass for non-subscribers).

So, if (a) I could be sure that it will not affect me, and (b) this would be a free for anyone who is in the area to use, and (c) they'd ask me to opt-in, I'd enable it.

georgecalm··on Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot FAQs
Funny coincidence. I've just spent the last hour on the phone with Comcast support asking them to disable the "xfinitywifi" my router is broadcasting and when it was all over decided to unwind and read some NH... And see this!

For anyone who needs to, call "1-855-845-6834" and ask them to disable the "xfinitywifi" hotspot on your router.

This will save you the 4 transfers, giving your info many times, and listening to the upgrade options you don't care about. It may also save you from the $70 support they'll try to charge you (should you choose to agree), and possibly one redirect to a number that no-longer exists (all of which I just went through).

GL.

georgecalm··on Quickly navigate your filesystem from the command line
Here's a `fish 2` shell version, that works on the Mac. You can add it as `~/.config/fish/functions/mark.fish`:

    set MARKPATH $HOME/.marks
    function jump
cd $MARKPATH/$argv; or echo "No such mark: $argv"
    end
    function mark
      mkdir -p $MARKPATH; and ln -s (pwd) $MARKPATH/$argv
    end
    function unmark
      rm -i $MARKPATH/$argv
    end
    function marks
      ls -l $MARKPATH | cut -d' ' -f12-; and echo
    end
georgecalm··on Show HN: better software deployment with Git
This looks similar to fleet[1] (which is awesome, btw). git-deliver looks a bit more complicated, though designed for more than just Node deployments.

georgecalm··on Logic Pro X
This caught me by surprise too while looking through the midi fx drop down. Got it to repeat the note I play in a nice (not quite musical yet) pattern. Pretty excitig! I'd love to hear ideas for creative uses of this thing apart from making clever arps.
georgecalm··on TraceGL: JavaScript code flow visualisation in WebGL
Well, I'm completely blown away by this tool. The utility of it. The speed... Amazing.

I think it's great that the developer decided to charge money for this too. It has real value for me, it's going to save time, so why wouldn't I want to pay to show my appreciation and to ensure it's being worked on?

georgecalm··on Obama Campaign AWS Infrastructure In One Diagram
It's interesting that apart from the DynamoDB and the SQL Warehouse (Redshaft?) there's a pretty large LevelDB instance serving the sites/services.

I also wonder if in reality there were only one or two instances in each zone for each site behind the ELBs and the others were added to show how scalable the infrastructure is; or if their number actually did correspond to the avg. number of instances they ended up having to spin up.

georgecalm··on Show HN: I'm bootstrapping my company and this is my first product. Thoughts?
Well, I can see that this app is going to be useful for me (assuming I don't forget to use it). Thanks for making it! A few comments:

- I'd like to start multiple tasks at the same time (like running, and listening to music--done at the same time, but have different limits)

- Make the granularity of time equal in 'Today' (curr min: seconds) and 'Goal' (curr. min: minutes)

- 'Goal tracking' on/off was a bit confusing, I think because it's on the screen that manages the goal and not on the one that creates it.

georgecalm··on New Chrome feature frees Web apps from the browser
I think it'll be more like an amalgamation of Adobe Air and Chrome Extensions (with their autoupdating and other features).
georgecalm··on Show HN: Barkeep, the friendly code review system
It looks great! Most of these features like the added context in diffs, inline code snippets and request review seem like very good candidates for features to merged into GitHub.
georgecalm··on Internet-Draft: A Convention for HTTP Access to JSON Resources
Yeah, I think it's a typo too (especially with the ?{query} there in the spec. Btw, do you understand the purpose of this Action?
georgecalm··on Internet-Draft: A Convention for HTTP Access to JSON Resources
Can someone elaborate on the "5.7 Action" please? What's the use-case?
georgecalm··on Vivify: A color scheme editor for vim
Very cool! I recommend the "wombat" theme for dark terminals.

Btw, the "start with your own theme" feature is broken in Chrome17 and FF8; it injects the CSS directly into the <body>, without the <style> tag.

georgecalm··on Nodejs.org New Clean Professional Design
I like it (especially the download pop-up).

Few comments: links may be better discoverable if underscored, and the items of the "explore nodejs" nav. section would be easier to hit if the click-surface spanned the whole block.

georgecalm··on How Google makes Google(+) fast
Does anyone know why they've chosen to use the iFrame approach to loading JS, instead of attaching script tags dynamically, a la RequireJS?
georgecalm··on Pretty-printing JSON and XML on Mac OSX
Nice! You can set up the following aliases in ~/.zshrc (or ~/.bashrc):

  alias json="python -mjson.tool"
  alias xml="xmllint --format -"
then pipe into them like so:

  echo '{"one": 1}' | json
  echo "<one>1</one>" | xml
georgecalm··on Tutorial: OS X automation with MacRuby and the Scripting Bridge
For those who are interested, the tutorial is doable in Python too. One thing to watch out for is that things that appear as properties are at times functions; so safari.windows [rb] turns to safari.windows() [py] and "window.currentTab.name" [rb] turns to "window.currentTab().name() [py].
georgecalm··on Tutorial: OS X automation with MacRuby and the Scripting Bridge
Interesting. What are the advantages of appscript over ScriptingBridge?
