geophertz··on Linux Kernel 5.3
Probably won't be in before 5.5:

geophertz··on FRT – A Godot “platform” targeting single-board computers
It also has support of the web using wasm and html5, *BSD and Haiku.

geophertz··on BitBounce – Email paywall that lets you get paid to receive marketing emails
I am not a marketer at all, but from what I know marketing is also about omnipresence so that when a customer will need a product they will choose the one they know, the one they have seen in the past, notably from advertising.

For example when Coca Cola have their brand on football matches, do you really think people are going to want to buy Coca Cola just because they saw the brand name?

Which means some companies might be interested in sending ads via BitBounce.

geophertz··on XSS attacks on Googlebot allow search index manipulation
The thing with this vulnerability is that it is just an XSS.

It has nothing to do with Google apart from the fact they don't run GoogleBot using a recent version of Chrome.

The other thing is that if I understand correctly, this could work without JavaScript. You could just inject HTML <a> tags to inject links in XSS vulnerable website.

PS: Apparently Google Bot has been updated to the latest version of Chromium which means it is even less a vulnerability on Google's side.

geophertz··on Why I’m turning my son into a cyborg
From what I have read this is a common thing to do especially to get some "advanced" features w/o having to pay an arm and a leg for a higher end pump.

There are even insulin pump firmware online.

geophertz··on Google's Project Dragonfly 'Terminated' in China
At the same time it acknowledges that the product existed in the first place shaming them for that as well.
geophertz··on Google's Project Dragonfly 'Terminated' in China
Strangely people do not care about Apple doing the same thing.

Even on HN posts talking about how Apple sells privacy as a product are upvoted and reach > 1000 upvotes.

geophertz··on Giant batteries and cheap solar power are shoving fossil fuels off the grid
That's ignoring the fact that these 4.5 trillion won't be lost they will have just have shifted into the hands of the public.
geophertz··on Costa Rica has run on 100% renewable energy for 300 days
By 300,000 years I hope you mean 200? https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-long-will-glo...

Not the only source but I couldn't bother to search more.

EDIT: this article says 90 years normally and 5 years if everything was run on nuclear power https://phys.org/news/2011-05-nuclear-power-world-energy.htm...

geophertz··on Chromium and the Browser Monoculture Problem
The thing is if we follow this idea, why don't we all use the same browser, that is open source and "not controlled by any single company"?
geophertz··on Screenshots from developers and Unix people taken in 2002 (2015)
This answer would require to explain the whole free software ideology. If you want to know more, just type Richard Stallman on Youtube to see one of his talks.

Or you can go to the free software foundation: https://www.fsf.org/

EDIT: the moment I posted this I wasn't aware someone had already replied

geophertz··on 100% renewables doesn’t equal zero-carbon energy, and the difference is growing
You seem to be ignoring the fact that nuclear power does produce a lot of green house gases "passively". Just to mine it and transport it to other countries. Than most importantly there is refining which also produces a lot of green house gases.

Not that other renewable energy do not produce any green house gases.

Also regardless of how much waste is produced, there is still waste which will live on probably longer than the human specie.

geophertz··on New Game: Minecraft Earth
Yeah but if you rewrite a Minecraft server to scale it would probably be possible. The Vanilla minecraft server runs on 1 thread and is written in Java so there is a lot of space for improvement.
geophertz··on I Charged $18k for a Static HTML Page
If only we could change the speed.
geophertz··on Which Programming Languages Use the Least Electricity? (2018)
Not necessarily. Sometimes compilers give better programs than a programmer can with optimization and stuff.
geophertz··on Mumble – Open source, low latency, high quality voice chat software
Yeah but in fact almost no one solo Qs.
geophertz··on PyPy v7.1 released; now uses UTF-8 internally for Unicode strings
Sorry if I am totally wrong but could you optimise UTF-8 by using some kind of character to say this is a UTF-8 character. For example:

AÉBéC would give

0x41FF42FF42

where FF would mean, refer to another table with the index of the UTF8 char like the following:

---------------

|------|------|

|0 |1 |

|------|------|

|0xC389|0xC3A9|

|-------------|

This would make random access fast however will also increase overhead at other places.

Also IIRC, UTF8 doesn't use values 0x80 <= unused_utf8_values <= 0xFF. Value between 0x80 and 0xFF could be used to refer to an index of the table. eg 0x80 = index 0, 0x81 = index 1 ... 0xFE = index 126 and 0xFF = refer to other table.

Regardless of values over 0x80. The index in the special table will still have to be kept when iterating over it for find and stuff.

EDIT: table formatting

geophertz··on RNN-Based Handwriting Recognition in Gboard
I miss the time when in Gboard you could use the slide typing to type multiple words at once. This was so useful and made people like me who are unable to type quickly on a virtual keyboard (touch) to type very fast.
geophertz··on Ask HN: How do I auto buy domain names?
Like * drop shipping * trading * and so many other jobs that make money out of money without benefiting anyone except themselves
geophertz··on Librem 5 Smartphone: Massive Progress, Exact CPU Selected, Shipping Adjustment
For me the librem 5 is to android what GNU Hurd is to linux. Why don't they do something more similar to what linux-libre is to linux to replace android rather than recreating the wheel.

AFAIK, android is open source, so why don't they just build on top of it while removing all non-free code/binary blobs from it.

geophertz··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
Could this be made as a browser extension?
geophertz··on Apple's best product is now privacy
I wouldn't trust apple for multiple reasons: * because they agree (or at least help) censorship in china it shows that they do not care about the user, they do what is best for them and if that is sharing data with anyone they will do it. It don't understand why apple would help a governments with bad intention in china and not the rest of the world. * secondly if they really want to protect your privacy why don't they open source some parts of their systems and let people build it (compile) themselves. eg: the T2 chip could be a backdoor, who can prove it's not?
