geogra4··on Apple M1 vs. Ryzen 3900X vs. Intel I9 in Software Development
I don't think any of the major cloud providers would be interested in #5. Better to have a wide open list of hardware that can develop for your platform. You can still run Windows VMs in AWS, Oracle DBs in Azure, etc.
geogra4··on Google outage – resolved
not hangouts? allo? duo?
geogra4··on Google outage – resolved
Good ole phone calls is my guess
geogra4··on If you can't play the new VR version of Myst, why not play the Apple II demake
Only because they've decided to use the low resolution graphics mode of the IIe. It has higher resolution modes he could have used
geogra4··on The Rise and Fall of Ambrosia Software (2019)
So its called Durandal, tycho or Leela?
geogra4··on The Rise and Fall of Ambrosia Software (2019)
The first piece of shareware I ever purchased was escape velocity. Wonderful little game
geogra4··on Endangered Firefox, the State of Mozilla
The big monopolies where there are increasingly no viable non-us alternatives are mobile os and browser engines.
geogra4··on If All You Have Is a Database, Everything Looks Like a Nail
Regular old sql Databases are not sexy so sadly they dont get the attention they truly deserve
geogra4··on Lambda: Turn Excel formulas into custom functions
This would make Excel 100x more maintainable. I would think a nice Github integration would turn excel closer to a maintainable programming language.
geogra4··on Reddit Claims 52M Daily Users, Revealing a Key Figure for Social-Media Platforms
Yeah. The niche communities are really what keep me coming back. For example, r/fermentation is a fantastic community of people who make all different kinds of fermented foods and is a great place to go for advice or recipes. But the main subreddits? Useless
geogra4··on AMD CPU sales skyrocket with Ryzen 5000 launch, leaving Intel in the dust
that may be true on retail CPU channels, but the vast majority of intel sales are to OEMs
geogra4··on A Japanese shop is 1,020 years old
Oddly enough that's also how roman emperors handled dynastic succession[0].

In a world with 40% child mortality, it was more of a sure thing than gambling on having a biological heir.

geogra4··on A Japanese shop is 1,020 years old
'tech' is kind of a broad brush. But Nintendo is even older than old behemoths like GE and IBM.
geogra4··on A Kid, a Minor Bike Accident and a $19,000 Medical Bill
Its been said before by some I went to high school with that now has a PhD in public health that America's Healthcare system is first and foremost about paying insurers and everything else is just considered a loss
geogra4··on Al-Adudi Hospital
Fascinating stuff. I wonder what kind of theory of disease they were working under
geogra4··on A 4-month online dating experiment using 10 fictional singletons (2012)
My now-wife was relatively new to the city we were in when I met her. we were both on OkCupid at the time but I didn't meet her from there. I wonder if we had met on OkCupid we would have hit it off as well
geogra4··on A 4-month online dating experiment using 10 fictional singletons (2012)
I was actually hoping to hear more about the kinds of messages that men receive. Back in my single days I never received any messages from women unsolicited so I'm curious what these are like
geogra4··on Why is life expectancy in the US lower than in other rich countries?
At the county level I dont think it neatly lines up to coasts vs interior. There's definitely a serious problem of the interior southeast though
geogra4··on Why is life expectancy in the US lower than in other rich countries?
I don't think its so geographically aligned like that. Plenty of rich areas in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix etc.
geogra4··on Servo’s new home
Right - unfortunately I feel like this is the most important question. I would have loved for someone with deep pockets like MS to take over servo. (Or even like Alibaba or Tencent)
geogra4··on YouTube-dl's repository has been restored
I think its probably similar to medicine in that there is a gigantic industry of middlemen that suck money out of the system and make far more than the actual service providers
geogra4··on Google sued: Idle Android eats mobile data to send telemetry and preload ads
I wish Microsoft didn't kill windows mobile. The Android monopoly is terrible
geogra4··on Intel Xe Graphics: An Interview with VP Lisa Pearce
https://www.anandtech.com/show/16211/intels-dg1-gpu-coming-t...

Hopefully there's some way to get it when it's released

According to videocardbenchmark.net Intel Xe graphics are about 20% faster than the GT1030, that currently leads in the world of single slot low power GPUs

geogra4··on Intel Xe Graphics: An Interview with VP Lisa Pearce
I really would be interested in a discrete PCIe GPU for a low power desktop. Not everyone wants to upgrade to a new mobo entirely.
geogra4··on Intel enters the laptop discrete GPU market with Xe Max
Would be nice to have a pcie version of this
geogra4··on No More Google
If you're an Amazon prime user you get free unlimited photo storage
geogra4··on The story of the PDF (2018)
It is a format that doesn't know what it wants to be.

Is it an image?

Text?

Vector graphics?

Electronic forms?

How about all of the above.

geogra4··on ReactOS (Free and Open Source Windows): Jérôme Gardou hired to work full-time
>I'd love for ReactOS to succeed, but they're up against a constantly-moving target.

I don't think they are - my understanding is that it's primarily focused on Win98-type compatibility

geogra4··on ReactOS (Free and Open Source Windows): Jérôme Gardou hired to work full-time
I think really the use case is to run in a VM to handle old code and keep security up to date. I wouldn't want to run it on bare hardware for that reason (3)
geogra4··on Apple, Google and a Deal That Controls the Internet
Yeah my experience once I switched from Google to bing and ddg is that for everyday items search is much better because it's not inundated with blog spam. I only go back to Google when doing technical/code searches as it still seems to be a bit better on those.
