geoffsanders··on PHP, Perl, Haskell?
Don't listen to any of the PHP haters here. You said you want to build simple scripts and blogs - something PHP is far more than adequate for, and it will be something you can pick up quicker than Python or Ruby. Also popular blog software like WordPress is all PHP.

While the PHP haters may be right if you're trying to get the best software engineering gig in Silicon Valley, for your purposes, I think PHP would probably be the best combination of tons of tutorials and documentation online, power and capability, and low learning curve.

Just my $0.02 as a PHP, Ruby, and JavaScript developer.

geoffsanders··on Marine who ripped Obama on Facebook faces discharge
Ok okay, you're right - I, the US military, the Marines, his commanding officers, and all of the legal reviews to date are all just wrong. Laugh.
geoffsanders··on Marine who ripped Obama on Facebook faces discharge
I'm glad you didn't re-enlist either, especially since you are patently wrong. I suppose you think you can insult your boss at work in the civilian world without discipline either? I encourage you to take a look at DOD Directive 1344.10 and consider the Sergeants comments such as (among others): "As an active duty Marine, I say screw Obama" or the fact that he sold anti-Obama bumper stickers - all of which are in clear violation of DOD Directive 1344.10. Additionally this Marine was told by superior officers previously to not engage in such activity and did so anyway, yet you think none of this constitutes insubordination? Not only was he insubordinate, he was contempt.

Whether you like the rule or not, military law is very clear and concise about the types of comments and actions that can be made towards the commander-in-chief. Bare in mind, this is an ACTIVE duty soldier criticizing the CURRENT sitting president - not just a comment about the institution as a whole or a politician outside his direct chain of command.

All things considered, this Marine is lucky he isn't facing court martial.

As a former member of the US Air Force, I can say that no matter how the press or anyone tries to spin this, this is NOT a first amendment issue, it is an insubordination issue.

Every US military installation in the world displays the current upper echelon of the chain-of-command in their offices, buildings, and headquarters, and I can assure you that every US base in the world presently shows President Obama on top of that command. The POTUS is the Commander-in-Chief, and for a Marine to insult the POTUS is just as insubordinate as insulting the Commandant of the Marines (technically it's worse). Furthermore, every active duty soldier is told to keep their political opinions to themselves - it's common knowledge in the military, and this soldier clearly thought those rules didn't apply to him. The military handles soldiers who don't follow rules in a very predictable fashion...

Tough titties, Sergeant.

geoffsanders··on How to Create the Next Silicon Valley
Apparently we're supposed to believe Silicon Valley is the only city privy to such little-known entrepreneurial know-how like "dream big" or "if you fail, try again" or "try and open doors and listen to people" - wow, seriously? Did they teach you that at Harvard?

Honestly, shit like this is beyond insulting - it's ignorant, elitest, and arrogant at best.

According to him, Silicon Valley became what it did NOT because of the historic semiconductor and electronics industries that were born there, NOT because of the world-class universities that reside there, NOT because of the major geographic significance of being a historic port city... no, no, no... none of that - it's because (now pull your notepads out you land-locked hillbillies in the midwest)... it's because Silicon Valley is a "trusting community" filled with "tribes of trust"...

Oh, well FUCK ME dude, you're right - places like Oklahoma just have the wrong fucking tribes! Too many Cherokees and Apaches, not enough "trust tribes"...

(sorry, this really pissed me off...)

geoffsanders··on One-Third of O2 Staff say They are More Productive Working From Home
I've worked at home for the past 5 years and I find that it's a bit of a mixed bag: While I'm able to have epic work sessions at home lasting far longer than a typical work day (I usually work one or two all-nighters throughout the week), I'd have to say I work more consistently in an office setting.

With that said, offices come in so many shapes, sizes, and varieties. Some are absolutely hell, while others look like adult theme parks!

geoffsanders··on Open-letter: Did hackernews become hateboard?
Being negative and being an asshole is not synonymous!

Believe it or not, it is completely possible to disagree and/or be critical of someones idea without being a jerk or an asshole. As we all know, emotion, intention, and connotation are all hard to convey in a text-only medium. Take a bit of extra time to ensure your comments are polite and respectful, and always keep in mind - PERCEPTION IS REALITY.

geoffsanders··on Ask HN: Review our online pitch deck
Just updated the pitch deck today with a bunch of edits and a few new slides. Thanks for the feedback again!
geoffsanders··on Ask HN: Review our online pitch deck
Let me get this straight - You think any site that hosts content, whereby the owner can sell recurring memberships for access, is a porn site? Sorry, but the porn industry can't (nor does it) claim ownership to the concepts of (1) content publishing (2) hosting or (3) subscription billing. Perhaps if you looked at the competitors slide, you would see that such an idea is already being used by people like Ning and Kajabi, and no one is calling them "porn" sites.
geoffsanders··on Ask HN: Review our online pitch deck
Thank you, I wasn't sure how detailed we were supposed to be with that, do you recommend on breaking expenses down on that slide? And how detailed should one be with the breakdown?
geoffsanders··on Ask HN: Review our online pitch deck
Correct, I'm talking about total reach because as adityar said, people have multiple subscriptions (as demonstrated by Facebook Pages with an average of 624 fans per page)
geoffsanders··on Ask HN: Review our online pitch deck
While your eyes may have found themselves eyeing the model and Playboy quote, that is by no means "our plan."

Anyone can have fans, as is represented by the 38,000,000 active fan pages on Facebook (34 million of which aren't businesses or brands). Unless there are 34 million porn stars looking for fan clubs, clearly our business wouldn't be solely based on sex.

Then again, I'm sure Tumblr thought the same thing... they're majority porn.

Thank you for your feedback though.

geoffsanders··on Can A Free Online Education Land You A Job? The Era Of Online Education Dawns
This article touches on something that I believe the education system in America has lost sight on - "self learning." In most schools and universities, learning is now synonymous with memorizing, and students simply attempt to dish back selected information they were spoon-fed. School should be a resource, not THE source, for information.

Just my $0.02, but then again I'm 100% self-taught and never liked school ;)

geoffsanders··on Google Going After Dropbox
Most significant line: "Unlike Dropbox, ...Google Docs' storage offerings are a bit more complex."

The beauty of Dropbox is its simplicity and seamless integration. Sounds like GDrive is more iCloud than Dropbox, so I'm not sure how accurate the term "Dropbox-rival" really is.
