geodel··on The Mojo language (by Modular, now Qualcomm) is now open-source
True. On positive side sometimes cult members do see wrong in their ways and apologize[1] . Sadly it is not always they will do that. Mostly they will spend time on attacking non-members.

Ok, how did it work our for countries where it did took root?

> Please don't bother speaking on Rust's history or development process again, to spare us your tiresome and consistent ignorance.

Well, one can always head back to their echo chamber to avoid hurt feelings, instead of telling others to not speak their mind.

geodel··on Being ambitious and being a dad
I think about it. At one point job accomplisments mattered and later it stopped not because of having family, but also what mattered at work changed. All the tips, tricks, late night work, things I thought were clever, unique, frugal solutions were marked as hack, obsoleted solutions, need to be replaced by "industry standards" platforms. Of course things change, one learn and apply new skills, but underlying theme was new solutions will be done proper experts this time. While I have to hang around to explain and repent my past mistakes if I want to hold onto job.

That plus, online, in-person training opportunities.
geodel··on Opus 5.0 drives incoherence into the stratosphere
Can't all this wait until Anthropic get listed at $2Tn valuation. They promise to fix all of this and more.

Please for time being fix your code issues manually and let them concentrate on marketing and exchange listing.

It prevents endless discussions on github, hurt egos when my precious PR is rejected by committers, and commentary on not being true open source because they are not welcoming source contribution, feature request, when they are trying stabilize compiler and so on.

Now none of these are guaranteed to happen when it is open source. But at least it is guaranteed to not happen when its not open source.

Well I think point was if they had gotten some fundamental things right from beginning they would not have to go through this 4.0 -> 5.0 breakage mess.

> Rust was open-sourced from the outset, years before even its 0.1 release in 2012, which then allowed it to explore its design space in the hands of real users improving their own language without having to spend five years

One can keep pounding on this but endless discussions about pros/cons Rust Async model, library, framework bifurcation and shortcuts to deal with it does not seem like given an open design win that many in Rust community assume.

Going by the way Rust always seems to get inserted in any language related discussion no matter what, IMO it could a meme "What would Rust people do?" when deciding what should not be done.

geodel··on Cerebras CS-4
Maybe it is just part of their "compact design".
geodel··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
In general true. But most of paying customers, including enterprise have made a bet that they cut down expense and resources on operational experience, system management knowledge to minimum because cloud .

So even if these cloud/SAAS solutions perform poorly it is not like customers have wherewithal to create alternate solutions.

No hope in US but I hope EU regulators are taking note of this working on fix as we talk.

How about I threaten you with mandatory 10 Electron applications / AI agent harness on your computer? Now you must be ready to fund my venture :)

> But a market captured by a cartel will be much slower to expand the supply.

Oh yea, governments can fix by putting 100 billion in memory fabs right now, and when demand crater in decade or so, let tax payer eat the cost of those fabs. At least it will benefit poor computer users like me.

geodel··on The Amazon Tax
Well same people had expected self-service restaurants, self-pay terminals will cause no tip. And even more fun future robotic servers can just work without expecting/asking for tips.

Or maybe I am wrong and "This time its really different".

geodel··on The Amazon tax
I mean of course. It is a mom n pop store with just 3 trillion market cap. If they don't do 95 ads with 5 actual results, they'll be out of business by this weekend.
geodel··on The Amazon tax
Huh, retail store has fixed amount of shelf space, it can't keep infinite variants, but Amazon has infinite real estate it can keep the exact item you search for on page 23 instead of page 1. Have same item appear 10 times on different pages/places in search, retail store can't do that.

It is like saying newspaper classified ads are same as Google ads. Not very good comparison.

geodel··on The Amazon Tax
"Your margins are my opportunity"

The great Bezos said ones and people, companies, stock market loved it. Now new CEO is noticing Amazon customers also have some margin and hence more opportunity for Amazon.

geodel··on Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
Well, RayBan was junk brand in 90s, if it becomes junk it would be just fine.
geodel··on JDK 27 G1/Parallel/Serial GC Changes
Perhaps. That's why actual JVM GC developers are talking about it.
geodel··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
Well mysql likely will turnout to be better choice than choosing "Cloud scale nosql DBs" when evaluators have rather limited hands-on knowledge about either of them.
geodel··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
Well its understood. Maybe your definition of explicitness is only met by things written like Principia Mathematica.
geodel··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
Well your points are making sense in isolation whereas this article is making more sense in general.

> I'm a bit tired of "simple" and "boring" and other nonsense words in this field...

This is hilarious in sense millions more will be tired and exhausted by evaluating new and exciting technology endlessly appearing all the time.

People go by these rule of thumbs which may not be perfect in every single case but they do increase success chances for even sub-par teams as opposed to "rigorously evaluating latest technology"

geodel··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
It has to be. And I think it is same everywhere we want everyone to attend high school. Nowadays we want college and universities degree for everyone too.
geodel··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
Thats the amenity trap. People want all sort of amenities that smaller neighborhood schools can't provide. Therefore bigger schools are built which had large centralized facilities for sports, recreation and all. So naturally now it need more commute times.
geodel··on Codex in ChatGPT desktop app for Linux is now in preview
But you might. And Codex is taking your threats seriously and stand prepared in case you breach protocol and start using your computer resources for your own nefarious purpose.

These apps stands as last defense between users and legitimate owners of compute resources that is electron and pals.

Building crud, bagging crud, greeting crud. All the same.

> What most people can’t afford is to maintain their desired lifestyle

True, goes without saying. I see most of the time when lifestyle is not even considered making a choice but simply as "everyone does it".

I might turn into most odd person in some sense among friends, colleagues, family/ relatives because I just happen to say things explicitly which makes for weird conversation.

Everyone around me expects these between the lines.

geodel··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
You are looking to "destroy kid's future" with such heresies like hanging out with friends. What's next? not going to school when one is sick?
geodel··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
I think magnet school and/or outside school /rec-league sports can easily bring that 15h number.

Overall I think you are right it is indeed bubble and once one is in, it is difficult to see not everyone is doing that.

I have a friend in town both husband, wife work from home and extremely busy with their elementary/middle school kids school/activities that I haven't seen him in years.

Being out of their bubble I only know whats happening but don't get to be tutored in how all these activities are essential. And even rare back out once in a while can be serious digression that affects child's future.

geodel··on Mojo 1.0
They kind of did. It has a separate website now [1] . All the docs, announcements, roadmap, some comparisons as you asked are there. So they do seem to be working towards separation.
