gentooflux··on Music Theory for Programmers
Because they can write it down. Good for them.
gentooflux··on Music Theory for Programmers
Music theory is a way of describing that cool thing you played, not the other way around
gentooflux··on There's no such thing as a small software team anymore
The agents are like ants, and ants build like crazy until the resources run out in winter. AI winter is going to be interesting, to say the least.
gentooflux··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
You seem to be suggesting that it's impossible to successfully sue the federal government, which is provably untrue. Yes the government abuses the rights of its citizens and will vehemently defend itself if challenged, but suit is the one of the more potent peaceful means we have to redress grievances with them.

As this is a civil discussion, being rude is uncalled for. Maybe go for a walk in nature and get your head back on straight.

gentooflux··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
Yes, citizens should sue the government when the government takes actions which are grounds for suit. The government sure will come after your money if you do things they say you shouldn't, and what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
gentooflux··on Claude Seems Down
Maybe get him something nice to cheer him up
gentooflux··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
Barbecue joints don't usually serve steaks. Tri tip, maybe, but if you're talking barbecue and beef then it's brisket.
gentooflux··on Less Coffee, Better Sleep
Magnesium, L-Theanine, and vitamin d. Make a regular bed time for yourself, and stop looking at screens 30 minutes before that time. Regular is more importantly than early, I.e. 11:30 is passable but only if it's always 11:30.
gentooflux··on GitHub is the wrong shape for this new world
> The job of a house framer didn't change, it just got faster and slightly easier.

And also quicker/easier to screw up in subtle and insidious ways!

gentooflux··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
And as a senior engineer, I'm not interested in cleaning up vibe code. When I review a PR for a junior dev they learn from my suggestions (or I tell their boss they're not learning). Having to correct an AI is a waste of my time.
gentooflux··on Fretboard Memorisation with Modular Arithmetic
The notes are in a similar layout, but violin and cello strings are tuned to fifths, where guitar and bass guitar strings are tuned to fourths. The fingering patterns for scales and shapes of arpeggios/cords are going to be frustratingly close but different for anyone jumping into (or out of) the orchestra pit on a whim.
gentooflux··on When A.I. is a member of the family
Rockstar interactions with young female fans are not as limited as you say. Regardless, celebrity worship is far from a new societal problem. Confiding with the toaster as though it grew up with you sure is.
gentooflux··on When A.I. is a member of the family
There's meet-ups and conferences and events, being a fan of a streamer or influencer is really just the new version of being a fan of a rockstar (for better and for worse). There's no real humanity exuding from an Amazon Echo, you're just a blip in a context window.
gentooflux··on When A.I. is a member of the family
The sad part is that it pretends to care about the user which creates a one-way emotional bond. We're in for some dark times
gentooflux··on Weightlifting beats running for blood sugar control, researchers find (2025)
The exercise you like doing and will do beats no exercise at all for blood sugar control
gentooflux··on Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds
This post is about using AI to teach 5 year olds...
gentooflux··on Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds
It used the words "freeze your hands"
gentooflux··on SimPolitics: America’s quest to solve politics with computers
You trailed off into a "might make right" argument at the end there
gentooflux··on Building a real-time AI tutor for 5-year-olds
I was making a dessert recipe last week where everything including utensils needed to stay cold, and Gemini suggested I freeze my hands in an ice bath before getting started.
gentooflux··on A road to Lisp: Why Lisp
I've found LLMs to be bad at balancing parenthesis. I've also found them to be less likely to hallucinate library types in dynamic languages, they tend to hallucinate arguments to library functions/methods instead.
gentooflux··on Maybe you should learn something
Only if it's a closed loop
gentooflux··on Identity verification on Claude
You might not be able to afford to put up power lines or build a road, but that doesn't mean you physically cannot. By your logic there are no natural monopolies
gentooflux··on The Doom Justifies the Valuation
Hell yes. More than a third of Americans would run their two and a half ton pickup trucks on burning copies of An Inconvenient Truth if it were at all possible
gentooflux··on Identity verification on Claude
The number of AI companies there can be is absolutely hard-limited by infrastructure. The ones which exist currently are racing like hell to horizontally integrate everything from network to power and water for themselves
gentooflux··on Identity verification on Claude
That is an inherent and unavoidable risk regardless, as things stand if you want access to frontier models you are at the mercy of their providers.
gentooflux··on Emacs 31 is around the corner: The changes I'm daily driving
This stuff all looks great, I can't wait to upgrade to 31 and then forget about all of it and just keep using Emacs the same way I have been for the past 20 years, /again/
gentooflux··on Becoming a father shrinks your cerebrum (2022)
Without all the oxytocin you get from hanging out with a newborn that would be awful
gentooflux··on The Mushroom That Makes People Have the Exact Same Hallucination
That's an interesting question, but the answer probably isn't worth the trauma you'd inflict on a child by intentionally raising them to be completely unaware of the existence of hats.
gentooflux··on Britain today generating 90%+ of electricity from renewables
Why is it "people are willing to pay" and not "corporations are brazen enough to charge"? These utilities are necessities and relatively few people have access to cheaper alternatives to them.
gentooflux··on Kotlin creator's new language: talk to LLMs in specs, not English
I usually invert those to reduce nesting
