genofon··on Apple threatened Facebook ban over slavery posts on Instagram
FB is a communication platform and a publisher, depending on what is more convenient for them. They police speech but then in more important things is clear that they are doing a very bad job. You can argue that any company at the end try to maximize profits but FB has a long history to be misleading an manipulating to avoid do what they should do while keep milking their cash cow.
genofon··on Air travel is going to be very bad, for a very long time
but terrorist attacks on flights seems more controllable than a virus and also more rare. Granted that it's true that there is a lot of sensationalism there are also events that will disrupt an industry for a while
genofon··on How I Turned an Idea into $7K by Teaching Online
It's a great project, I would only make a small correction... What the author* calls profit still includes all the time and effort you put in: building an audience, creating the course, building a reputation, marketing, etc.. Just to make people understand that it's a lot of hard work and taking that not consideration the ROI is much lower.

*small correction: you->the author

genofon··on Hundreds of thousands in L.A. may have been infected with coronavirus: study
you don't take into consideration how contagious it is, it's not only important the percentage but the absolute number and also the time (due to resources constrains)
genofon··on California Covid-19 traffic report finds silver lining
of course everyone has to die at a certain point, when does make a difference and COVID is making a HUGE difference as you can see by the spike in mortality rate
genofon··on IMF predicts worst downturn since Great Depression
yes and assets started to bubble because of the hidden inflation of QE. What do you think it'd going to happen by just keep printing money, 10% to normal people and 90% to businesses ?
genofon··on Map of usage of intensive care beds in Germany
That's not true, Italy's debit was slowly declining till 2009, the big financial crisis that originated in the US and it was mostly because of US bank and funds. after that there was a sharp increase but it then stabilised at least.

In my understanding there is only a blunt no to the coronabond, not a request fro more condition.

It was unfortunate that it started with Italy, and been the first with an outbreak like that in Europe push them to take brave decisions.

To me it feels more like that these countries don't want to help because they feel it's Italy's fault and they need to pay.

But what about all the money that was given for free to Germany to rebuild after the second war war, despite a long history of aggression?

It's not a surprise that people wants to break the EU, it's sad to see this project heading this way.

genofon··on Worst economic crisis since 1930s depression, IMF says
life is much more than just an economic contribution. Society is made by people that have relationships far beyond economics (family, friends..). Money plays a big part of course but people were also happy when there was less money around. Loosing one (or more) dear one is much more devastating that an economic crisis.
genofon··on Covid-19: death rate is 0.66% and increases with age, study estimates
the problem with relying too much on death is that even trying to be accurate if the system is overwhelmed they will not spend time, resources and precious test on a death body. This is not speculation, it's happening in China, Spain, Italy (sorry can't remember the source)
genofon··on Doctors and Nurses Say More People Are Dying of Covid-19 in the US Than We Know
I think it would be useful to compare the mortality rate of a region with the past years. Other than uncounted coronavirus death there are other emergencies that cannot be throated properly in some heavily affected areas and that increase the overall mortality rate.
genofon··on The $0.006 Object in a Sushi Container
I sincerely wrote that to make the PP author to reflect to his situation, but of course read it as you prefer
genofon··on The $0.006 Object in a Sushi Container
1 the feeling it's much better 2 enormous waste (multiply that by the people in your country)

Once, when I though that people might regularly use plastic I thought: "if that's not a mental health red flag I don't know what it is"

genofon··on $1T is leaving Britain because of Brexit
as you are telling others to be more informed, and you said that Junker is unelected.. how do you think Junker ended up in there? Do you think he can just do whatever he wants without having to asked? Or you think every important official should be directly elected by the citizens? Spoiler: it does not happen in the main democracies for roles such as president or even head of state, and of course it does not happen for the Queen. I would be more upset bout that than about Junker.
genofon··on IBM‘s Project Debater does debate club-style discussions with humans
IBM is just remarketing old systems as AI, there are plenty of companies, Google as one of the main one, that produce AI innovations, this it's just a PR stunt
genofon··on In the Works – AWS Region in Milan, Italy
According to Forbes (2017) UK is far from be top country https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2017/11/23/the-to...

Aside from that, and I'm sorry is totally tangential, but I live in UK and I find the luck of food culture here disturbing. Sure there are a lot good restaurant, but most of the people are not able to appreciate and cook good food, while in France, Spain, Italy I find the level much higher.

genofon··on Thermometer Tells Your Temperature, Then Tells Firms Where to Advertise
I'm confident there are people at FB already preparing it.
genofon··on Deep Angel: AI that erases objects from images
unfortunately in my experience that's the case for most of opensource AI projects out there, while the showcase results are hand-picked or the algorithms was trained and tuned to solve that specific image.
genofon··on JupyterCon: I don't like Notebooks [slides]
Serious question, I don't want to attack this presentation but in general am I one of the few that finds meme annoying in slides?
genofon··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
Very likely an ads in disguised, such a shame seeing things like this in newspapers.
genofon··on Fewer Births Than Deaths Among Whites in Majority of U.S. States
Even assuming your view represent the real situation (things that I don't believe) do you think that other races (I still use the term despite race not being scientifically a real thing for humans) will do differently?
genofon··on Behind the Messy, Expensive Split Between Facebook and WhatsApp’s Founders
but it doesn't append with youtube for example
genofon··on Behind the Messy, Expensive Split Between Facebook and WhatsApp’s Founders
Yes! The worst for me was a couple of days ago, I started playing a video, I changed tab and the video stopped! I came back and it started again. I guess one of their main KPI it's time on site, like people are not spending enough time already, and regardless of how people want to use their website.

Edit: rephrased one sentence

genofon··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
I would agree with Skype, but what actually happened with LinkedIn? I remember in pre-Microsoft times they asked me for my google email and password.. right not to log-ing with google but the email and password! I understand it's more LinkedIn's fault than Microsoft merit, but I just wanted to say, IMO there were never "good times" for LinkedIn
genofon··on Anger Over Tourists Swarming Vacation Hot Spots Sparks Global Backlash
1) in this case, Iceland has 300k people, so people might expect a difference experience 2) people also travel to see and understand a different culture, see how life is in another place, so yes, they can be annoyed by tourists that invade an area.
genofon··on Google Grapples with ‘Horrifying’ Reaction to Uncanny AI Tech
unfortunately many places don't, at least in my experience here in UK. Either because they are too small (like the hairdresser in the example) or because they are big and old or even they only use the phone to discourage customers complaints/profit on the call (even Ryanair for legitimate complains)
genofon··on Google Grapples with ‘Horrifying’ Reaction to Uncanny AI Tech
sometimes you just want to avoid talking to another human, I would be very happy to do these things online instead of an actual talk. I think the advantages are more in the other side, from customer support, which from some company is terrible (mostly fro management/budgets issues)
genofon··on IBM is not doing "cognitive computing" with Watson (2016)
but their message is for outside the community, so I don't think they deserve any charitable interpretation, they lost this privilege a long time ago. I have to say I'm biased, I wish I can see them disappear soon, but I think I have the right motivations.
genofon··on Investing in “Magic” Cards
Just want to share this vey interesting channel on the topic, Alpha Investments: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTp-iVOtTrKau0skmfZlo5Q I'm no into magic but I enjoy the explanation and history
genofon··on A friend of mine died and I didn't know because of algorithms
why do you argue on this? it's totally a personal preference and totally OT, if he/she wants to use FB that way let it be
genofon··on Understanding Uber: It's Not About the App
of course they would, to protect their image, be vary cautious with statements like this
