I like a good thick book but I could not finish Monte Cristo. After about the 40th character introduction I just had to put it down. The problem is me, not the book.
My opinion, anything driven by an algorithm is inherently bad. It’s hard giving up those sites, not because that’s where the people are but because we are all addicted to them. If you switch to mastodon or pixelfed, you’ll find good stuff there, but you won’t engage with it as much because it’s not algo driven, which to me is a win.
Having small mini-pcs in my basement and a couple of Cloudflare tunnels and Tailscale has been awesome. Made me realize that I've gotten used to paying for software that is free because someone else was hosting. But now I host it and it's a way better experience. I'm not crazy about using Cloudflare, but so far it's been great. Having Postgres, rabbitMQ and Redis all running locally (and then realizing my traffic doesn't need a cache or a queue and just doing it all in Postgres) has been awesome.
I am constantly asking Claude to be more terse/brief/ELI5. Improve using the tool. But if I have to scroll to read the output I just can’t follow it.
If I see a long paragraph and I know the author is Neal Stephenson I think “this is going to be dense but good.” LLM long outputs on a code base I know well just make me glassy eyed.
I totally hear you on that, but for my one off apps (and even some of my not one off apps) if I can't implement a feature in a PWA, I just learn to live without that feature.
Yeah. That was it. I remembered it wrong (you use chatGPT which I admit, has better voice interaction). I use claude code and type it all. Most of the time for walks/runs I just let my thoughts go whenever. But that's just me. I do really appreciate your post though. I wouldn't have the claude skill without it.
Somebody here posted about a Socratic method skill for Claude (or whatever your LLM of choice is). I’ve found this to be fantastic. Dropped in a dense PDF about Linear Algebra, Postgres (those are the two I’ve gotten into so far). It’s basically just a skill.md that reads, “Here’s a document, give me an opening statement about the material and ask me a question. As I provide answers, guide me to simpler or more complex areas of the topic. Something something Socratic method.” Works great.
We had 3pm coffee club at a previous job. It was great. Had our own slack channel(public). As the minutes counted down people would post gifs counting down (/giphy 4, /giphy 3). Most of the dev team would go. We’d go a heavy coffee shop. The talks there and back were great.
Same article was written about the proliferation of the Sony Walkman back in the 80s. Same article was written about newspapers on trains. File under “new thing is bad.”
I didn't promote a product. I was showing that low sports radio shows aren't really any better than easy to make AI podcasts that cover the same topics. Just tried and true host personas (the over reactor, the crank seen it all before, the stats guy, the callers) is just wrapped around the stats of the game. People mention claude in their comments all the time and they aren't flagged as promoting a product. The podcast I linked...ah never mind.
