generj··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
What a feckless board.
generj··on Greg Abbott says data centers:'basically dug their own grave'
Not internalizing the costs of increased electricity consumption was an own goal.
generj··on Man Dressed as Darth Vader Defends Flock Cameras to San Diego City Council
It depends on what your goal is in talking to the council.

Here, the goal was media attention.

If you want the council to actually engage with your comment - because it’s reasonable and not insane - then wearing an outfit probably will not help. Though I’m all for more Lord Bucketheads in politics.

generj··on Man Dressed as Darth Vader Defends Flock Cameras to San Diego City Council
A reminder that city council public comment meetings can be more like Parks and Rec than anyone imagines.

That said, showing up and making comments at local meetings can really matter. The number of people who actually participate in meetings like this is low. Showing up with a reasonable argument (probably not in a Darth Vader outfit) can have an outsized impact.

generj··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
I’m not talking about a literal Marketing 101 course, but I’m also not entirely facetious about this all being taught in a first or second Marketing class (having attended those).

I agree we should not expect everyone to have taken a marketing class - but I sure expect the author of the piece to have demonstrated some curiosity about some of the terms. And we know they did, because the author decoded them into plainer language in their table. So why present these elements as an abnormal thing for McDonald’s to compute about them, rather than something an undergrad might be expected to compute as part of a project?

generj··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
Some of the collection is creepy, and I’ve largely stopped using mobile apps and loyalty programs myself. However, some of the concern seems very misplaced.

“Oh no McDonald’s runs a Customer Lifetime Value algorithm, a thing in use for decades and which has minimal privacy implications.”

“GASP the Golden Arches knows I like Diet Coke and has applied a marketing segmentation to me!”

Congrats, you’ve discovered they use concepts taught in Marketing 101?

generj··on The Space Force is now seeking to buy up to $30B in rocket launches
Seems premature when the increase in the Space Force budget hasn’t happened yet.
generj··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
I recently got the slightly smaller sister (the Solterra). The Trailseeker is actually known as the e-Outback outside North America, and it looks it.

On a straight line full pedal down it will spin the front tires. Absurdly fun. Not as nimble around a curve as the sports sedan it replaced but I honestly tell people I don’t miss my old car. And I definitely don’t miss feeding premium gas to the turbo engine.

I respect the BRZ and Miata owners who frequently do track their cars. I can’t help but hope someone makes a small range but lightweight RWD EV that can whip around a curve for them.

generj··on Woman in Brazil enslaved for 55 years by 3 generations of the same family
The state as a whole does not have a financial motivation.

The interests of the criminal justice system on the other hand is heavily financially benefited from the current state of affairs. More incarcerations means more judges, more lawyers, more job security.

Moves to correct this are labeled as “soft of crime” and surely my opponent Congresswoman Y isn’t pro crime?

generj··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
More importantly Apple can effectively bring up the shadow of this lawsuit whenever OpenAi tries to acquire money.

They can make legal fillings and calls to Bloomberg to keep the story going as long as they want to and suck some oxygen out of any IPO ramp up.

generj··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
It’s even more ridiculous when choosing to do it Apple. It’s hard to think of a company with more legal resources and which is more protective of its hardware IP.
generj··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
Apple kindly wanted to make OpenAI add in some legal liabilities to their IPO filling.

Discovery is going to be great fun (for Apple).

generj··on Israeli firm BlackCore suspected of meddling in New York and Scotland votes
They don’t own the contest, an Israeli company sponsors Eurovision.

I suspect the song on Israeli participation is not over yet, but that’s a side tangent.

generj··on Noise infusion banned from statistical products published by Census Bureau
Many countries effectively have a live registry of where people live, updated to within a few weeks. A door to door census isn’t needed because they can do something like:

SELECT a.province, COUNT(DISTINCT b.id_num) FROM registry a INNER JOIN national_id b ON a.nat_id_num = b.id_num WHERE timeframe = 2026-01-01 GROUP BY 1

generj··on Judge Learns Both Sides Used AI, Cancels Trial, Kicks Everyone Off the Case
The pure audacity to get caught and chewed out by a judge and then continue not reviewing briefings for hallucinated cases.
generj··on Federal judge blocks H1B visa $100K fee
Which is clearly illegal.

Congress would need to declare any official language(s). Moreover, by treaty and law (NALA of 1990) obligations to Native American tribes there must be more languages than merely English.

generj··on Pentagon raised threat of Israeli spying on U.S. to highest level, sources say
Unlike North Korea, Israel is highly globally economically integrated. I’ve only ever seen anti-Zionists propose defeating the state the same way the last apartheid state (and Israel’s nuclear weapon development partner) was: a mix of extreme economic and diplomatic pressure.
generj··on Pentagon raised threat of Israeli spying on U.S. to highest level, sources say
I believe it’s in reference to the humor TV show Letterkenny which has a beer brand called Puppers. Characters on the show often ask for another fucking puppers.
generj··on U.S. to dismantle system tracking Atlantic currents that are at risk of collapse
Because it would be really nice to know if some of the currents collapse when it happens rather than months later.

Even beyond that immediate need, the oceans are incredibly poorly studied and are of massive economic and military value to the United States. Baseline statistics on currents could be very useful for all kinds of as yet unknown science and applications. Countries that run a big navy do ocean science. It’s a form of dual purpose funding that benefits both civilian and military ships.

generj··on Ex-girlfriend of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt ordered to pay him $10M
If you are worth $52 Billion how petty do you have to be to go after your ex girlfriend for cash for any reason?

Also the arbiters write up is incredibly biased and not at all what I would expect a neutral party to write. “One can also conclude that Ritter engaged in self-centered efforts to obtain revenge against Schmidt in a way that was more damaging than helpful to her cause.”

This is about a man who went after a girl less than half his age and then decided the power imbalance wasn’t severe enough so went into business with her as well. Are we really supposed to believe sexual assault is outside the realm of possibility in those circumstances?

generj··on Elon Musk has lost his lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI
The EU also lacks incentivizes to not harm SpaceX. The US government as a whole, and DoD in particular wants SpaceX around to deliver cheap mass to orbit.

Europe on the other hand would love any judgements which give their rockets a chance to catchup. So they won’t temper an investigation or fines accordingly.

generj··on AI Will Be Met with Violence, and Nothing Good Will Come of It
Tbf UBI-lite during COVID was paired with 2 things:

1) massive handouts to business owners through forgiven “loans.” Predictably this had massive fraud, some of which was prosecuted but not much.

2) massively constrained supply chains which caused higher prices.

I suspect 2 at least would have caused inflation regardless of the stimulus checks.

It’s unclear to what extent UBI causes persistent inflation. Proponents claim the backdrop of a minimal income will enable more risky innovative projects which could increase GDP growth enough to counteract some level of increased inflation.

generj··on Satellite firm Planet Labs to indefinitely withold Iran war imagery
If power plants and bridges are targeted, would imagery of that be released “on a case-by-case basis for urgent, mission-critical requirements or in the public interest?” Is there any recourse for the media to seek an exemption?

If a hedge fund bought an earth imagery provider and traded on imagery they are “requested” not to release, is that insider trading?

generj··on Artemis II crew take “spectacular” image of Earth
What a mad idea.

The aesthetic ended up pretty cool but I can’t imagine the thought process that lead to capturing the launch on a 3DS.

generj··on Olympic Committee bars transgender athletes from women’s events
It’s not in the article.

They list their findings but no data. They effectively are just issuing an opinion. The opinion may be more considered than the rest of ours, but it’s not data.

generj··on Olympic Committee bars transgender athletes from women’s events
> That analysis, which has not been made public

So much for science.

generj··on Olympic Committee bars transgender athletes from women’s events
There’s probably a reason the analysis has not been made public.

It’s not evidence until published because it can’t be disputed.

generj··on Olympic Committee bars transgender athletes from women’s events
Not only trans athletes, but any biologically born women the IOC thinks are insufficiently feminine.

It’s an unfair advantage apparently. You know, like being born tall for basketball players. Curious how no other biological advantages are being policed.

generj··on Six ingenious ways how Canon DSLRs used to illuminate their autofocus points
It’s impressive the optical complexity some of these systems use. Custom and complex prisms and mirrors to show the AF points.

Arguably more complicated than the anutofocus optics. The engineering of electromechanical cameras fascinates me.

generj··on There is unequivocal evidence that Earth is warming (2024)
China is rapidly going green.
