generj··on Disney trip turned into immigration detention
I’m in favor of amnesty only because we have allowed employers and households to hire people without immigration status for decades. It’s absurd to punish the supply of labor and not the demand of it. At this point entire key sectors of our economy cannot function without illegal immigrants. Randomly punishing a small percentage of illegal immigrants does nothing to change that reality - and so it’s just performative pain rather than a solution.

We also as a democracy simply cannot allow the status quo of a permanent underclass of non-voting residents to be a large percentage of our population. It’s corrosive to have different classes of people with different labor protection rules, wages, etc. There simply is not a clean path forward that doesn’t involve some kind of amnesty simply because seeking justice would be a humanitarian and economic crisis.

Amnesty might not be justice, but as a nation it’s our penance for decades of destabilizing our neighbors and allowing this situation to continue. Let’s get a reasonable immigration system in place and move forward.

The Nazis didn’t start by massacring ethnic (and political, sexual, and religious) minorities. They started by massacring mentally handicapped people.

But then they made noises about getting rid of undesirable people by shipping them out of the country. Prior to that plenty of dehumanizing rhetoric that Trump and others eerily echo. It was only after the forced deportations didn’t pan out that ghettos started. Then detention camps. And finally extermination centers.

It’s very reasonable to look events which appear similar to the start of genocides and decry them.

Regardless of if there ought to be some sort of consequences for a civil (not criminal) infraction, the consequences shouldn’t fall on a 9 yo girl. I have no idea how the operators of the for profit detention center sleep at night.

Usually receiving a green card forgives any visa overstays. Because she married a US Citizen she would almost assuredly have received the green card. The months of suffering of a little girl are just due to a delay in a bureaucracy approving some paperwork.

It depends, if the political take is sufficiently shitty it’s a betrayal of your morals, friends etc to continue to associate with your family spouting it.

Typically that has to be some extreme form of bigotry people won’t let go of after repeated coaching. Extreme bigotry or conspiracy thinking is arguably a form of abuse directed at other family members and it’s 100% ok to cut people off for being abusive.

generj··on Border Patrol agents show up outside of Gov. Gavin Newsom's press conference
I’ll comment before this inevitably gets flagged.

Federal agents intimidating a sitting governor is an affront to the United States federal system. Anyone failing to protest this only reveals they have no actual allegiance to federalism and only ever view it as a useful tool to bang on when they are not in power in Washington.

We are in deeply dangerous waters as a country.

generj··on Mountain of Ink
Potential buyers should also be aware the fountain pen community on Reddit has soured massively on Goulet.

In addition to deteriorating service and slow shipping concerns compared to alternatives, there’s a view that purchasing from the company directly funds anti-LGBTQ owners and organizations. The owners cofounded a branch of a church whose pastor made wildly anti-LGBTQ remarks. The response to the controversy was not well handled by the Goulets (essentially radio silence then an highly misleading statement). The controversy came around the same time a well beloved podcast employee Drew was fired.

There was also the prior controversy with Noodler’s Inks and the Gaulet’s rehabilitating him after anti-Semitic imagery was placed for a second time on his bottles.

Because so much of the original megathread was deleted (whole lot of subreddit moderation drama occurred because of this incident) I’m linking a later summary for those curious.

Not necessarily, there are still lenses being produced today with vignetting, especially wide open.

Avoiding vignetting is a trade off between complexity, cost, weight, and other optical flaws. That said modern optical design and manufacturing has made it a lot easier to have nearly flawless (clinical) designs.

Worse for SoaceX than losing StarShip, I think the pad is lost.

Idk about Toyota moving away from Kaizen, but they certainly have moved away from JIT. Toyota pioneered Just In Time (JIT) part inventory which dramatically lowers inventory costs and makes balance sheets look far more attractive.

What Toyota realized in 2011 due to the Fukushima disaster however is that this completely fails for computer chips because the pipeline is too long. So they kept JIT for steel, plastic parts etc but for microcontrollers, power supply chips, etc they stockpile large quantities.

generj··on High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill
I’ve heard private jets goers barely get bothered with customs - I’m curious how much smuggling starts happening via them.
generj··on High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill
They are expensive for larger boards however.

Great if you only need a few square inches.

Oshpark is still decent for small PCBs, since they are made in the US.

From what I’ve seen the biggest impact is just the carriers requiring a huge fee (relative to my $40 worth of PCBs) just to deal with the tariffs at all. I almost wonder if there’s a profitable side gig for someone couriering PCBs from Canada -> US, mailing them, and then flying back. A single suitcase can carry a LOT of PCBs. Obviously declaring it all still but just structured as a single import so the fees as a percentage would go down.

Adafruit does their own assembly (pick and place / reflow) but not sure what PCB providers they have. There are US based PCB fabs.

Cyber City Circuits does small scale assembly in the US and seem like a cool company (ran into them from the Datasheet Digest podcast they put out). But yeah obviously they aren’t going to be able to match a $35 PCBA JLCPCB prototyping order.

I don’t disagree but it at least raises the outrage from the court(s), media, and people if they were lying.
generj··on SSD1306 display drivers and font rendering
I2C is nice because it is (with Adafruit and Sparkfun’s Stemma QT/Qwiik) literally plug and play for beginners, with a wide variety of sensors available.

Plus not needing to dedicate a control pin per device added to the bus. Though of course if data throughout is an issue SPI is better than I2C.

generj··on SSD1306 display drivers and font rendering
This display is the modern 16x2 display for hardware hackers: cheap and versatile.

One of my favorite hacks is running this display over HDMI [0].

Note that it’s possible to refresh it at higher rates by using partial refreshes. Or even higher to 150 fps [1].

generj··on U.S. and El Salvador Say They Won't Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported
The government said on Saturday he’s alive.

It’s not worth speculating beyond that. From a purely cynical view, it’s better for the rule of law if he is alive as he can be a test case. If he’s dead, that is likely a different court case that could get assigned to a different more credulous or craven judge, plus burn out some time.

generj··on U.S. and El Salvador Say They Won't Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported
The government thus far refuses to even admit there is a contract, let alone if it applies to the prisoner in this case.

I think the judge is beyond frustrated and I would expect contempt charges to start flying pretty quickly, particularly after the government seems to keep flaunting her orders.

generj··on U.S. and El Salvador Say They Won't Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported
The Judiciary can deputize anyone to be their Marshals, if the executive prevents the existing Marshals to faithfully follow legal court orders.

If that fails, the Judiciary could also in theory declare the executive in breach of their oaths and urge the military, state and other federal officials, and the public at large to follow their own oaths to the Constitution.

But at that point it’s just a civil war with more legitimacy. It’s still the right move for the court to make in the situation where they can no longer force the executive to follow the law.

generj··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
It creates a lot of incentives for corruption though.

It’s not at all uncommon in Latina America from my understanding for wealthier people to fly up to Miami, buy a ton of iPhones for family and friends, then bribe the customs agents to look the other way.

generj··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
There’s a 0% chance other countries were charging tariffs across the board on US goods at the rates claimed.

The EU simply doesn’t charge 40% rates on the bulk of US goods. Let alone the random countries that all somehow have 10% tariff rates in the US.

generj··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
If you bring back goods worth more than $800 it has to be declared and a duty paid.

Judging from the changes (currently paused) to the de minimus shipping rules (also formerly $800) I’d expect the threshold to be lowered substantially. Possibly arbitrarily while I’m on a trip and have already bought the goods.

The risk being if detained by DHS for who knows how long is not worth saving $400 on a MacBook personally.

generj··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
For China maybe, I doubt any serious analysts were expecting this high of tariffs on most other countries, like Mexico, the UK, and Canada.

The methodology of counting non-price barriers on certain goods then applying it across the board on all goods as tariffs is bonkers. Doubtlessly they aren’t including all the non-price tariffs the US imposes on other countries either.

I’m extremely skeptical the EU has effective tariff rates of 40% on all US goods, and furthermore skeptical that if so the US doesn’t have countervailing effective tariff rates at the same rate.

generj··on Crew-9 Returns to Earth
It’s a massive difference to SpaceX who were awarded the de-orbit contract and would need a massive amount of extra funding to suddenly bring that project’s timeline forward three years.

Also a large difference to all of NASA’s international partners who might lose out on astronaut slots, scientists with experiments that won’t be ran, dozens of contractor companies supporting ISS, etc.

generj··on Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On
At one point I made a simple extension that maliciously edited Google and Adobe Analytics tracking requests, alongside setting the DNT header. Junk data (especially page names slightly off, etc) is infuriating for analytics users. If enough people had a “respect my DNT header or deal with it” extension I think DNT would have succeeded.

Working at the time in the web analytics field I never released it.

generj··on Why it's so hard to build a jet engine
A Merlin’s lifetime run-time, even with 25+ reuse launches, is just a hair over two hours (162 first stage time times 25 times two for the static burn). That’s assuming the high reuse stages keep all the engines even.

There are likely some compromises engineers can make when the engine is only running for that amount of time with refurbishment in between each 6 minute runtime.
