genericuser··on The Problem with Job Titles
Is it just me or isn't Data Science used in an even more vague manner than Software Engineer is used. I mean on a daily basis I encounter people that call themselves Data Scientists who would never be able to use the title Software Engineer or even programmer as they wouldn't be able to write a single line of code if asked.
genericuser··on How Prisoners Make Moonshine
You know what I never checked the federal level. At the time I was doing this I figured if the state said it was legal in a certain case then the feds didn't have a problem either. I since realized how wrong I was about that logic, although it still makes more sense to me than the reality.
genericuser··on How Prisoners Make Moonshine
Transportation and storage of contraband are both large issues in prison. Concentrating the intoxicant can be quite useful.

They made the wine in the manner the article this one references describes. Where 'wine' is just what they call any sugary liquid that has fermented.

genericuser··on How Prisoners Make Moonshine
As long as they are making sugar wash (or wine as the article calls it) instead of a fruit based one the chemistry does not allow for methanol to be created, is my understanding having researched this fairly heavily in college before making my own still.

Also if you did make a fruit based wash when you ferment it the methanol will evaporate first (or at a lower temperature than the ethanol if you have that level of control).

This whole article is rather poor as a guide and there are much better and more complete resources on how to build better distilling equipment with a tea kettle, some copper tubing, and a bucket. It is a good article for understanding how prisoners do it, which is its intent.

I mean if you are a prisoner or you are limited to the same resources as a prisoner; then sure, I guess its a guide that you could use. Otherwise a better guide and $20 bucks at the hardware store will have better results, for home distilling experiments.

Keep in mind home distilling is illegal in most states, some have alternative fuel creation exceptions or small allowable amounts.

genericuser··on Ross Ulbricht Convicted of Running Silk Road as Dread Pirate Roberts
Because he does not seem to lead any people, or actively promote changes in laws (as evidenced by his choice of defense if nothing else). Instead he seems to be a regular business man, trying to make money. For pivotal leader I am talking a Martin Luther King, not a Reverend Jesse Jackson.
genericuser··on Ross Ulbricht Convicted of Running Silk Road as Dread Pirate Roberts
Yes, and if there were a person above DPR he was willing to rat out I am confident they would let him do the same.
genericuser··on Ross Ulbricht Convicted of Running Silk Road as Dread Pirate Roberts
People who object to a law should use a martyr as a rallying cry to show people the extent which laws are unjust and convince other people and politicians that the laws should be changed.

By making your demand the freeing of someone who may be a martyr but did little to effect actual change in the laws(is not a pivotal leader in the political portion of the movement) you consider unjust, you are not progressing the ideas you believe in. Only trying to undo a single action.

If and when the laws are changed to make the bulk of their actions legal, they will likely be freed then either for legal or political reasons.

genericuser··on Cultivated Disinterest in Professional Sports
You previously stated sports were unhealthy. Hence he asked why sports as a general activity were unhealthy. You are now only supporting that argument by changing what you said to be qualified as professional sports, without even acknowledging the change in argument. I know it is considered poor taste to call someone a troll here, but this tactic is used almost exclusively by trolls in my experience.
genericuser··on Cultivated Disinterest in Professional Sports
It isn't about not liking what other people like, it's about being a jerk about it.

I for instance don't care for sports. And that is how I phrase it when asked. If there is a sports related conversation taking place I am generally more upset at the snobs demanding to be a part of the conversation just so they can shit all over sports in general, than the people that are spending an hour talking about a specific player, game, or statistic.

It very much is a social thing where you need to know how to politely excuse yourself from conversations and situations you do not want to be a part of rather than trying to evangelize your view that they suck.

genericuser··on Why You Should Tell Your Children How Much You Make
My parents simply told me they had too much in savings for me to get financial aid so filling out the FAFSA was a waste of time. But the entire time I was growing up they acted like we weren't in the best financial shape and couldn't afford name brand cereal and stuff so I learned to be thrifty through a false sense of being worse off than we actually were.

It is important to teach kids to live with in reasonable means and how to prioritize needs over desires to stay within budget when everything is accounted for. It is not important in my opinion for them to know an exact amount anyone makes, but the article does outline a way the former was achieved by doing the latter.

genericuser··on But Where Do People Work in This Office?
I am one of those people that can not comprehend how people work in coffee shops, I have tried it in the past, and have trouble even figuring out what I wanted to work on. Every time I see something move out the corner of my eye I need to look at what is going on. Every time a new sound starts or an existing sound stops I take notice. I am constantly afraid someone will sit down at the same table as me and try to take some of the precious little space I have sprawled with notes. This happened once and I tried to keep working but then there was a persons face like 3 feet away from mine over a tiny table and I lasted about 5 min before just leaving.

I can do crap like respond to emails, make todo lists, read documentation, write specifications, and google for the solutions to known problems. I am however fortunate enough to have a job where all that makes up a minuscule fraction of the work I do, most of my work is in solving new problems by developing and implementing algorithms. And that requires thinking on my part which is something I am completely unable to do with new thoughts about my changing surroundings constantly entering my head. My work provides two person offices with enough space to be comfortable. As well as common areas where you can work if you so choose to be out in that type of noisy environment. Only a handful of people make use of the common areas for anything besides eating lunch or having scrum.

I believe it is because nearly everyone's work involves either thinking or being in meetings all day. And while I will not be supporting it I believe if you give someone who needs to think the choice between a nice quiet office where it is accepted that if their door is closed you don't bother them, or a nice common area with the noises of people walking by and milk being frothed, they will eventually realize they are more productive where there are fewer distractions. (Not that everyone wants to be more productive)

genericuser··on What Heroin Addiction Tells Us About Changing Bad Habits
It really depends on the budget of the alcoholic from my experience. Alcoholics have a way of making their alcoholism fit/fill their budget.
genericuser··on Is the NYPD About to Start Ticketing More Cyclists Due to a Mathematical Error?
The drivers that it increases hatred for aren't the parked ones ones, and aren't the ones next to you going the same direction, they are the ones that have to worry about an unexpected cyclist in their path, regardless of if you believe you will be safely out their path by the time they get to where you are.

I am sorry but I felt it was obvious I wasn't talking about parked cars.

genericuser··on Is the NYPD About to Start Ticketing More Cyclists Due to a Mathematical Error?
True but ticketing the reckless ones is needed, and the fact there are reckless ones, enough that I encounter them regularly at the same intersection(its a really long light) indicates to me it should be enforced. So I was disagreeing with your belief that "while decreasing safety only by the slightest margin if even any. I honestly don't see the problem."
genericuser··on Is the NYPD About to Start Ticketing More Cyclists Due to a Mathematical Error?
As someone that has had to come to some pretty abrupt stops because bikes darted out into intersections from behind cars while they had a red light and I had a green turn arrow. I disagree. I am in Boston not NYC but there is one intersection I go through in my daily commute where this happens at least once a month, and the first couple times it happened was nearly bad.
genericuser··on Is the NYPD About to Start Ticketing More Cyclists Due to a Mathematical Error?
If the drivers are present and having their hatred increased, then the cars are present and you shouldn't be running the red light when cars are present, because yes that does make you an unsafe cyclist in that regard.
genericuser··on Why I can't have conversations using Twitter
Most people probably fall into the using the wrong medium category. If you are taking are taking over 140 characters to say what amount's to 'Who want's to go to Olive Garden?' then you are thinking too far though.

And he specifically chose a medium which was not twitter to describe it.

genericuser··on Kippo Honeypot Video Gallery
My initial thought was it was a link to some sort of sting operation also, as I did not know what Kippo was. I could definitely see sting operations as being interesting to the segment of this crowd with more anti-government leanings.
genericuser··on Shop with a Girl
Yes, and so is sending a space craft to mars. Was there a point to saying it is learn-able?

Lots of things are learn-able skills, different people will require different amounts of time to learn different skills. It is up to them to make rational decisions on whether its worth it for them to continue learning those skills.

At some point I realized making friends male or female was not a skill worth the unknown further amount of time it would take me to learn. I was not going to fall for a sunk cost fallacy, just because I had spent years trying to make friends and failing.

genericuser··on Shop with a Girl
>this is supposed to appeal to the "i dont have any female friends because i am a nerd" crowd. Speaking from personal experience, this ends around 18-19 years of age.

Yeah I guess I transitioned from denial about it being due to my nerd status to "why don't I have any friends at all, am I really that horrible" around the age of 20.

Around 30 I just came to accept being alone, and having given up it matters very little what I wear.

genericuser··on A Raw Deal in Michigan
95 inches in 1997 was not the amount of snowfall that year.

It was the record depth of snow that accumulated on the ground. Meaning that more snow than that likely fell through the year.

genericuser··on Skunk Works Reveals Compact Fusion Reactor Details
You know what demoralizes a team EXACTLY like that?

When people on the team think they are pointing out problems, but are doing so without support, by simply saying "That won't work" instead of "That won't work because of ...".

This does nothing to further a project and leaves the burden of proof for a working solution on the person who proposed the solution in the first place, and the way for them to prove their solution is to continue working on it, with no actionable feedback to revise their project on.

genericuser··on Nexus 6
I do not run flux, 6 inches seems accurate as if i stick out my thumbs they touch my glasses. Basically when I watch a video I want the screen to take up my entire field of view.
genericuser··on Nexus 6
I scroll/swipe left or right with my thumb, most of my use is reading comics or watching videos, video being where the resolution most matters doesn't really require much interaction at all.

As far as typing I hardly look at the screen then and ppi don't really matter then. If I am just checking my notifications it barely comes out of my pocket. But when we are in a discussion of ppi being useful, I assume we are talking about the uses where you are actually looking at the screen.

Edit: Just realized that when I type longer messages or emails I tend to hold it 2 handed landscape and hold it pretty close(around 1 foot away) and tap it out with my thumbs because I find it more accurate. So I guess that is how one would type with it that close.

genericuser··on Nexus 6
You use your phone at arms length? I am usually holding mine at like 6 inches to 1 foot from my face. I could very much tell the difference between the 318 ppi of the nexus 4 vs the 445 ppi of the nexus 5 with my usage patterns. I am skeptical that I would notice further improvements though.
genericuser··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
In the account creation settings you don't necessarily cover all options with your drop downs.

For instance the "It is very important that my partner: " you have 4 options: No Preference, Wants kids now, Wants kids in the future, and Doesn't ever want kids

As someone who absolutely does not does not want kids 'now' but is indifferent to them in the future I really wish there was a an option called. 'Doesn't want kids now'

genericuser··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
That doesn't really answer the question of the reject pool.

To me it just kinda says you will fault the user if their matches don't result in a date, but try to keep 'helping' them while you are getting paid.

As a further question how do you even out demand for the different matches. Assuming the number of matches contracted by men for women is not the same as the number of matches women for men? Do some people not get matches do some people get surprise double matches(in which case if they were only expecting one date a month won't they generally reject the lesser of)?

I mean honestly I would rather not be matched and not be charged than matched with someone who got extra matches all the same day they weren't expecting.

genericuser··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
Honest question, if you think someone is unmatchable based on their expectations not matching up with what they offer. Will you let them know and refuse their business, or will you just throw other unmatchable people at them and keep taking their money. (basically will a reject pool exist where you don't really put in any effort, but just slap together the left overs)

As someone who's only matches on Tinder and OKCupid in the past few months have been camsites and escorts this is an actual concern of mine.
