general1465··on Social media use on the rise among Australian under-16s after ban: data
I think that the fragmentation of social networks is what hurts big social networks the most. It creates competitors who can tune their formula / algorithm in obscurity and then just "come out of nowhere"
general1465··on Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union
Maybe there is something wrong with app store distribution process itself, because these QR codes are not everywhere for Android, Windows nor MacOS
general1465··on Trump sends the US Navy back to the steam age
You are pretty cathartic, the reality is that EM catapults are the future. US Navy knows that, Chinese Navy knows that. The elements for EM catapults are not reliable enough yet, bot so weren't LCD screens in their beginning especially CCFL tubes. But hey is somebody using heavy CRT monitors nowdays? Nobody.

Furthermore EM catapults will likely become cheap, then you can use them outside of ships - i.e. have EM catapult on the military airport. Imagine that you can just toss plane into a flight with a minimal runway. Imagine having such runway in front of a every stand. Then bombing of airports will get much harder because you won't catch planes lining up on takeoff, they will be all catapulted in the air within seconds.

Also EM catapults scale. You can make catapult long enough to accelerate a rocket so you don't have to use first stage booster.

general1465··on Trump sends the US Navy back to the steam age
Counterpoint is that Chinese are integrating EM catapults into their carriers without bothering with steam.
general1465··on The Manual for ICE's Electric Shock Gloves
> Wrestling somebody to the ground is trivial with these

Not trivial at all. When you have normal zapper you have to avoid contact with targeted person e.g. holding them with one hand and stunning them with other will electrocute you back. That's why tasers firing electrodes are so common while normal handheld zapper never caught up.

With these gloves you don't even have a reach of a handheld zapper. Suspect can touch your face while you are about to electrocute him via gloves and you will knock yourself from fight. Now imagine that suspect is on PCP so electrocuting him will have limited effect while it will have full effect on you.

general1465··on Trump sends the US Navy back to the steam age
Except for the huge space and weight it occupies, which electromagnetic catapult does not need.
general1465··on Kyiv blows up biggest Wildberries hub in drone attack
Prigozin tried to go against Putin with actual army. And he was naive enough to think that he can shot at the king, miss and live.

general1465··on Kyiv blows up biggest Wildberries hub in drone attack
It kind of works. Imagine that Iran would be able to blow Amazon warehouses in the USA using drones after 4 years of fighting. Sure there would be few fanatics on Fox News wanting to nuke Iran, but most of people would be asking what is the point of bombing Iran in the first place? What's the goal?

Because that's what Russians are facing right now. No gas on gas stations. No online ordering of stuff. Enemy drones are flying daily over their heads after 4 years of fighting, Russians are fearing of another mobilization and for what? What is the goal of this war?

general1465··on Ordinary WiFi can now identify you with near-perfect accuracy
You don't have to have washing machine either but it is kind of pain to wash in your hand. Same like it is a pain to connect your phone to Ethernet
general1465··on Wildfire alert backfires as public blocks all government warnings
Absolutely realistic. I have disabled warning on my phone because government was sending me warnings about fires - 50km+ from me or amber alert about missing kid - 70km from me. At that point it is just a spam service.
general1465··on The Manual for ICE's Electric Shock Gloves
Ok, let's be realistic. This is a nothingburger because no US law enforcement officer will get close enough to a suspect to touch them to electrocute them. If you have to electrocute suspect, he is dangerous and you want to keep your distance. There is a reason why police is not running around with simple zapper, but they are using tasers which can shoot electrodes to a distance.

Secondly - humans has tendency to touch themselves. It is only matter of time before these gloves are going to be obsoleted because ICE officers electrocuted their balls or forehead by accident while trying to scratch it.

general1465··on I hate packaging my software for Linux
> You provide sources and instructions on how to build them

Have you ever interacted with actual users? This is absolute no-go which will only bring world of pain on you and your issues list and your email and your Discord and whatever other way you decide to talk to users....

general1465··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
Absolutely. I can barely sleep when I feel pressure of what I am have to do next day, especially if it is something stressful. When somebody would be measuring performance of my sleep the idea of sleep would be stressing me out.
general1465··on Mars dust is toxic. How will future astronauts deal with it?
Well, frozen deserts like Northern Canada, Alaska or Siberia are not getting all hyped up and people often times are trying to get out from there even that it is almost not possible - see i.e. Norilsk

Mars with its -80 degC is much harsher desert than dirty industrial towns of Siberia.

general1465··on Microsoft Is Quietly Deleting Mentions of 32 GB RAM Recommendation for Win 11
I am in this bucket too. MSSQL + VS + tested Server + tested Client on 16GB + Win11 will just choke MSSQL server into constant timeouts. But if I will offload MSSQL onto another computer everything works just fine.
general1465··on Microsoft Is Quietly Deleting Mentions of 32 GB RAM Recommendation for Win 11
Developing apps for platform you are not using is just pointless exercise in frustrating your users. If app fails on Windows, how are you going to support your users? You don't have Windows, so you are unable to replicate the error at a first place.
general1465··on US Military asks troops for 'creative and unconventional' ideas to punish Iran
Or there is no long term plan. Every leader is just larping as Leeroy Jenkins for short term political points which sometimes works (Crimea 2014) but unfortunately for Trump, Israel had wrong intel and whole assumption of regime change in Iran was build on invalid data.

Kind of like Russians storming into Ukraine in 2022 thinking that it is Prague 1968 but it turned out into Afghanistan 1979 and then slowly mutated into World War 1 1914

general1465··on "Clean" Code, Horrible Performance (2023)
> Functions should be small + Functions should do one thing

This is often a trap for performance. Sure, it looks nice on a screen but calling a function to return a variable is usually epic waste of performance unless compiler will save you by inlining the function into your code or architecture you are using has a magic instruction for that (call vs fcall - which compiler has to recognize and use) which is just fancy "goto there, mov r1 <- *var, goto back"

general1465··on Apple is getting this wrong
I am actually confused why creating an email john.doe@apple.com and separated employees work only iCloud on the email is such a problem and they want people to use personal iCloud? Not even corporate stuck in 90s does that.
general1465··on Telegram Removed from App Store
Then they would also need to remove X/Twitter for same reason.
general1465··on Flock's CEO Faced Me After Its Cameras Led to My Wrongful Stop
But 34DTM* == 34DTM10 which is exactly what Flock did.
general1465··on TSA Privatization Returns Airport Security to a Dangerous Past
In Europe you have often private companies like G4S as a security with police doing only supervision and passport control.
general1465··on Sales Are So Low, California Wineries Are Burning Their Vineyards
> Wine is associated with fancy dining instead of fun and parties.

That's true. When I have started mixing some cheap red wine with cola (kind of normal in many parts of Europe) my American friends were looking at me like I am committing heresy.

general1465··on Man seeks millions after being shot by police in game-related swatting incident
Cops has to be trained. If they are trigger happy fools and shoots everything what moves, they should end up in jail.

Notice that swatting is problem almost exclusively to USA. In Europe cops will just check what is going on first before bringing the big guns.

general1465··on Writing a (valid) C program without main()
It is a C program. Completely valid, only little bit unorthodox.
general1465··on The Dark Night of Mathematics
> Taking a helicopter to the top of Everest is not as rewarding as climbing the mountain.

Flying from Atlanta to New York is not as rewarding as walking there. You are right, but if we would be walking everywhere, we would still be stuck somewhere in ancient times.

general1465··on Big tech is now targeting Native American land for data centers
I have always wondered why tribal lands are not being used for bulletproof hosting, banking institutions without KYC and similar grey area business which can make a lot of money.
general1465··on Linus Torvalds tells AI haters to fork off

general1465··on New era for Gibraltar with removal of border controls with Spain
Kaliningrad has been colonized properly by Russians, right after removing indigenous population.
general1465··on Texas factory cost $469M using old equipment, makes zero artillery shells
I can see that USA and Russia are more similar than one could expect. This kind of corruption of opening a factory and then delivering nothing or delivering overpriced garbage is so typical for Russia and one of the reasons why they struggle so much in Ukraine.
