gen2brain··on Why JPEGs still rule the web (2024)
JPEG can be YCbCr, RGB or even CMYK (usually from Photoshop or similar software). There can also be unusual subsample ratios for YCbCr, such as 4:2:1. I created some WASM Go bindings for jpegli, and I recall that such images cannot be represented in Go; therefore, for these images, I force RGBA output.

Also, XYB is an option; I use the adaptive quantisation option from jpegli (with progressive level 2) to get smaller files. I never bothered with XYB, as it looked complicated.

gen2brain··on Show HN: I rewrote my Mac Electron app in Rust
The UI appears simple enough to be implemented in any desktop GUI library. Why did you decide on using web technologies? Is it because of the libraries you are using in the app?
gen2brain··on Miqt: MIT-licensed Qt bindings for Go
Nice, thanks. All the other Qt bindings seem abandoned. https://github.com/kitech/qt.go is interesting though, it uses a huge wrapper, and then FFI calls. Now we can use libffi with purego (there is already a library) so in theory such a method can be used for CGo-free Qt bindings.
gen2brain··on Is Tor still safe to use?
Because how else would they know that Kamala used to work in mcdonalds. Pure gold in western media.
gen2brain··on Go is my hammer, and everything is a nail
Check https://github.com/bitfield/script for shell-like scripts in Go.
gen2brain··on Rustgo: Calling Rust from Go with near-zero overhead (2017)
Maybe it just looks slow to you, for example, check the raylib bindings benchmarks, Go is usually at the top, together with Rust, C#, etc. and Python is at the very bottom. Perhaps not the best way to benchmark FFI but it shows that Python is not even usable besides playing.
gen2brain··on The Linux audio stack demystified (and more)
There is still an ALSA OSS emulation in the kernel, probably distros do not enable it but I have had it enabled for years. All it needs is some ioctl system calls, which does everything for me internally. ALSA with just system calls and without libalsa can work for some cards but it would be hit and miss. I like that I can use OSS in Go without C/CGo, i.e. https://github.com/gen2brain/oss.

And then there is Pipewire with PulseAudio plugin, and not to mention you can compile Pipewire with support for GStreamer, Jack, etc. I guess we can remove only the Arts and ESD daemons from that list, but the mess just adds up.
gen2brain··on The Linux audio stack demystified (and more)
Whenever someone mentions Linux and Audio I always remember this image (made by Adobe I think) https://harmful.cat-v.org/software/operating-systems/linux/a.... It is missing Pipewire but it should be easy to add a dozen of new lines. This is the reason why I simply use plain ALSA without any sound daemons.
gen2brain··on IUP – Cross platform C GUI library
You can check the screenshot from Windows 10 here https://github.com/gen2brain/iup-go/blob/main/examples/sampl.... If you are not using the manifest it will not follow the system appearance and will always look like Windows XP Classic.
gen2brain··on IUP – Cross platform C GUI library
IUP is very nice and easy to use, and it uses real native controls, which is a big plus. Compared to wxWidgets, being written in C, it is easy to create bindings. I maintain Go bindings for IUP core here https://github.com/gen2brain/iup-go.

I wish development is faster though, perhaps moving the project to GitHub could help with that. I would like to see modern tray support on Linux instead of legacy one, someone to finish Cocoa support, native table/list view control (it is on the TODO list), support for gtk+ 4, etc.

gen2brain··on XFCE 4.18
I use gmrun for many years, in every DE, bind to Alt+F2. I am happy that now there is a new home here https://github.com/wdlkmpx/gmrun. I cannot imagine using something else.
gen2brain··on WxWidgets 3.2
wxWidgets are a perfect choice if you want cross-platform native controls. Just a reminder, Qt doesn't use native controls, it just emulates the native look and feel. Besides wxWidgets I know only IUP that uses system native controls (though Cocoa is a work in progress), and IUP deals with just UI, wx is like a Qt, a lot more.
gen2brain··on Bukanir streams movies from torrents. App written in Go
I don't think it is possible because of the libGL and libasound, those will not work in static build, and possibly udev. This way it is actually more portable, without static libstdc++ and only standard libs dinamically linked.

gen2brain··on GSMGo – SMS HTTP Server with REST API, Written in Go Language
GSMGo is SMS HTTP server with REST API, written in Go language.

Server enables you to send SMS messages with simple HTTP POST request:

# curl -X POST -d '{"text": "Message Example", "number": "+38164182xxxx"}' http://localhost:38164

GSMGo uses libGammu so it has support for many different phones. Check Gammu Phone Database for details http://wammu.eu/phones/ .
