gelatocar··on Policies that make the poor less poor
The free tram zone is great, but only covers the CBD which is pretty tiny.
gelatocar··on Show HN: A Simple Search Engine
The problem in firefox is from this bit of code:

    /*
        Darkmode
    */
    @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
        html {
          background-color: white;
          filter: invert(100%);
        }

        input {
          filter: invert(20%);
        }
    }
It seems in firefox the invert doesn't apply to the background color of the html element so you end up with yellow on white.
gelatocar··on 4x Hour EC2 Outage for the Entire AWS Sydney Region
Latest update from AWS:

[08:49 PM PST] We wanted to provide you with more details on the issue causing increased API error rates and latencies in the AP-SOUTHEAST-2 Region. A data store used by a subsystem responsible for the configuration of Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) networks is currently offline and the engineering team are working to restore it. While the investigation into the issue was started immediately, it took us longer to understand the full extent of the issue and determine a path to recovery. We determined that the data store needed to be restored to a point before the issue began. In order to do this restore, we needed to disable writes. Error rates and latencies for the networking-related APIs will continue until the restore has been completed and writes re-enabled. We are working through the recovery process now. With issues like this, it is always difficult to provide an accurate ETA, but we expect to complete the restore process within the next 2 hours and begin to allow API requests to proceed once again. We will continue to keep you updated if that ETA changes. Connectivity to existing instances is not impacted. Also, launch requests that refer to regional objects like subnets that already exist will succeed at this stage, as they do not depend on the affected subsystem. If you know the subnet ID, you can use that to launch instances within the region. We apologize for the impact and continue to work towards full resolution.

gelatocar··on 4x Hour EC2 Outage for the Entire AWS Sydney Region
This is impacting us as our application relies heavily on Lambdas connecting to RDS via VPC. Has been down on and off since about 12pm AEST today. Doesn't seem like there's any easy ways for us to resolve or work around without just waiting for AWS to fix.
gelatocar··on Firefox 64 Released
I found this strange too, thankfully it is easy to change by turning off: Preferences > Tabs > Ctrl + Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order
gelatocar··on Armageddon Looms over World Chess Champs after Carlsen’s Shocking Decision
You could do it like AFL and not stop the game for substitutions.
gelatocar··on Improving DuckDuckGo
Yeah agreed. As a js dev any search that isn't limited to 1 year is pretty much useless, but 1 month isn't enough.
gelatocar··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually use Keybase?
The Keybase filesystem docs still contain the text:

"At the time of this document, there are very few people using this system. We're just getting started testing. Note that we could, hypothetically, lose your data at any time. Or push a bug that makes you throw away your private keys. Ugh, burn."

And considering that kbfs is one of the more mature parts of Keybase, it has never inspired confidence in me that any of it is really ready for serious use.

gelatocar··on Insomnia GraphQL Support
Yup, it was introduced in August last year: https://insomnia.rest/blog/introducing-graphql
gelatocar··on How slot machines are designed to be addictive
It is an interactive article so it kind of requires js. It would need to be rewritten to make sense without the interactivity.
gelatocar··on A Decade of Dynamo
I'd be interested to hear how others are handling read/write capacity configuration for dynamo. It seems like it would be very easy to hit the account limit of 10,000 units once you are querying any significant amount of data. I've also run into issues with auto scaling where you have to endure up to 15 minutes of downtime before the scaling kicks in [0]. Even on a table with ~2000 items I've found it becomes quite slow and costly to fetch data. Also the 25 item limit on batch writes makes it pretty frustrating to edit/delete lots of data.

gelatocar··on Why Astronomer is Betting on GraphQL
GraphQL isn't really comparable to Postgres. It is more of an alternative to using a REST api.
gelatocar··on WikiLeaks Has Been Hacked

I'm guessing some people are getting a cached version.

gelatocar··on Man who made passwords hard regrets rules that 'drive people crazy'
A 1 in 2000 chance of correctly guessing someone's password could lead to lots of attempts which at best would cause lots of password resets and at worst cause lots of compromised accounts.
gelatocar··on Cloudflare Reverse Proxies Are Dumping Uninitialized Memory
Couldn't an attacker construct a page that triggers the memory leak and just keep accessing that page to get different pieces of memory?
gelatocar··on A cloud images processing platform
I think this (http://photos.imgix.com/racking-mac-pros) is what you are after.

Their earlier article about racking mac minis is good too: http://photos.imgix.com/building-a-graphics-card-for-the-int...

gelatocar··on Pricing Comparison: Cloud Hosts
I quite like linode and have used them for years but it seems a bit disingenuous to not include competitors like digitalocean[1] and vultr[2] in this comparison. They have very similar pricing.

gelatocar··on Say hello to Google Allo: a smarter messaging app
Are you referring to this bit?

> Apps that enable anonymous or prank phone calls or SMS/MMS messaging will be rejected.

I read that as anonymous or prank SMS/MMS, not just any SMS/MMS.

gelatocar··on Spammers Abuse GitHub by Forking Unreal Engine
https://github.com/HelloKitty is 404ing now, hopefully they've been banned from github.
gelatocar··on WebGL Julia Set
No luck on android 5.1.0 with Chrome 47.0.2526.83 for me, just a black screen. No errors in the console either. Sorry I can't give you a more helpful description.

edit: that's for the submitted link, http://jonathan-potter.github.io/Mandelbrot/ works fine.

gelatocar··on Comodo CEO Forum Post on Lets Encrypt Trademark
How come this keeps getting flagged and has dropped off the front page?
gelatocar··on Iris: Fast back-end web framework for Go
That graph is really confusing, is the x axis a progression of processing times from 0 up to ~1000ms? If so then wouldn't it mean that Echo-2-fasthttp has nearly as good requests/second?
gelatocar··on Qlik acquired by Thoma Bravo for $3B
Naming and hearing of are very different things.
gelatocar··on Sublime Text 3 marked as recommended build
I certainly didn't intend any negative connotations to that sentence, but I agree in the context of the title it does give undue emphasis to 'still'. FWIW I use ST3 beta every day and it is an excellent text editor. I have no qualms about the development rate.

I think something like your title or even along the lines of 'Sublime Text 3 released [false alarm]' would work.

gelatocar··on Sublime Text 3 marked as recommended build
I think the title of this should be updated, as it is not correct. The sublime text homepage has been displaying builds for sublime text 3 since mid February[0]

Sublime Text 3 is still in beta.

gelatocar··on Spectre.css – a lightweight, responsive and modern CSS framework
<em> is a semantic element, and doesn't necessarily have to be italic. There are lots of use cases for italic text outside of <em>s.
gelatocar··on Bideo.js – Easy Background HTML5 Videos
What do you mean by the dimensions are wrong? I use the same css above and it works fine.
gelatocar··on Introducing unlimited private repositories
What about companies like Epic Games that have few repos but many users?

With their 2 private UnrealEngine and UnrealTournament repos they would have been paying $25 a month and under the new pricing structure will have to pay $815,913 per month...

edit: That's based on what I can see as a UE4 subscriber, 2 private repos and 90657 users.

gelatocar··on Nature Prefers Hexagons
Wasn't it mice? edit: wait, nvm - I get your meaning now.
