gejjaxxita··on Harder programming questions do a worse job of predicting outcomes
Hash maps are O(1)
gejjaxxita··on Uber Paid Hackers to Delete Stolen Data on 57M People
2FA wouldn't have necessarily solved this, if the hackers had access to an engineer's ssh keypair (e.g stolen laptop) they could clone repos as they pleased. 2FA isn't a silver bullet.
gejjaxxita··on UK parliament to get binding vote on final Brexit deal
>Time to read up on some British History. The last time this happened

No it wasn't. This has never happened.

It's really hard to conclude that anything so tangentially related and which happened such a long time ago could possibly be relevant.

gejjaxxita··on UK parliament to get binding vote on final Brexit deal
I am an EU citizen living in the UK for 11 years (my whole adult life) so this is from my perspective. The campaign and reasons given for leaving were extremely xenophobic. There was a lot of talk of EU citizens "clogging up" the healthcare system and emigrating to the UK to claim benefits instead of working. Almost none of this was based on fact but it almost certainly swung the vote.

Other reasons such as sovereignty were also given but most polls indicate that unhappiness with immigration was the main reason people voted to leave the EU. This in itself isn't necessarily xenophobic, but given the enormous economic benefits of immigration into the UK it's difficult to conclude otherwise.

gejjaxxita··on Sending in our nude photos to fight revenge porn? No thanks, Facebook
This sort of article makes me angry. Facebook are trying to come up with solutions to fight a real problem and this person is just saying "I don't trust Facebook".
gejjaxxita··on Huddle's 'highly secure' work tool exposed KPMG and BBC files
It seems from the article that security tokens were not unique and being generated with a 20 millisecond granularity, furthermore the security tokens were the only thing required to access files (no username etc).

If this is correct then this is astonishingly poor design and this problem was completely predictable and obvious.

gejjaxxita··on Bomb kills journalist who exposed Malta's ties to tax havens
This. As a Maltese person who has been following her for a very long time it is frustrating to see the way in which she is being mischaracterised in the international media. She was well known in Malta for making false allegations, character assassinations, mocking people from what she considered to be a low social status, publishing revenge porn to humiliate people and so on.
gejjaxxita··on Bomb kills journalist who exposed Malta's ties to tax havens
Maltese person here who has been following this journalist for a long time. The international reporting of this omits a lot of important information. It is far from certain that her assassination had a political motive. While I admired her for uncovering cases of corruption, she also had a very nasty streak, resorting to things like publishing revenge porn [1][2] and mocking women for the way the dressed [3]. A revenge motive completely unconnected to politics cannot be excluded.

I don't deny that the circumstances of the assassination are suspicious, and I also think a political motive is possible, but people are jumping to conclusions without waiting for evidence.

gejjaxxita··on Malta car bomb kills Panama Papers journalist
It seems unfair to me that you are being downvoted. I am a Maltese developer and my thoughts mirror yours. The international media has taken a slant on this (assuming that her murder is connected to the Panama Papers) which may turn out to be correct but is far from certain.

gejjaxxita··on Productive on six hours of sleep? You’re deluding yourself, expert says
That's fair enough, but I think your personal circumstances are unusual (and unhealthy). For the majority of people sleeping 8 hours is practical advice because they work 8 not 12 hours, leaving them with 4 extra hours, which is enough time to go to the gym, spend with family etc..
gejjaxxita··on Productive on six hours of sleep? You’re deluding yourself, expert says
How and why would you work for 12 hours in a day? I don't understand why anyone with choose that life for an extended period of time.
gejjaxxita··on Out of all major energy sources, nuclear is the safest
I'd never heard of that until now. Extremely interesting.
gejjaxxita··on Django vs. Flask
One thing I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned much is the Django Rest Framework (DRF). If you're building a CRUD-heavy website with very separate back and frontend (no django templates) then the fact that DRF can give you a big hyperlinked REST API for free is something I've found extremely useful.

I tend to use Django for big websites and Flask for small websites/microservice APIs.

gejjaxxita··on Django vs. Flask
Having used Django and that project (Horizon) extensively, I think that Horizon is not a pain to work on as a result of Django, it was just badly written.
gejjaxxita··on How SSH got port number 22
I am aged thirty and every day I use a technology that didn't exist when I was eight, furthermore this technology "feels" ancient to me.

It's a bit cliche but the pace of innovation in our field (at least up to now), and the rate at which we get used to new things, is amazing.

gejjaxxita··on What Happens When You Send a Zero-Day to a Bank?
When on holiday this is quite common. With 2-factor auth this is fine.
gejjaxxita··on Calculus Made Easy (1914) [pdf]
I read this book when I was 14, it belonged to my grandfather. I'd completely forgotten about it but seeing it has really brought back memories.
gejjaxxita··on Google Earth Redesigned
On my 4 core i7 laptop with 8GB of RAM running Ubuntu this juddered and flashed a lot and CPU utilisation went to 100% on all cores... I didn't think my laptop was that bad.
gejjaxxita··on How to Raise a Creative Child – Step One: Back Off (2016)
In adulthood, many prodigies become experts in their fields and leaders in their organizations. Yet only a fraction of gifted children eventually become revolutionary adult creators. This sentence, which the article hinges around, has no meaning. A tiny fraction will become revolutionary adult creators by definition - if their achievements were more commonplace then our understanding of what a revolutionary creator was would change to become more exclusive.
gejjaxxita··on Ask HN: What do you want to see in Ubuntu 17.10?
But for a lot of people $1200 is a fine amount to spend on a laptop. For those people who don't want to spend that much there's plenty of other, cheaper laptops they could buy and run Ubuntu on.
gejjaxxita··on The new £1 Coin
Your analogy is flawed because you are discussing investigating a crime that has been committed. The purpose of the new coin is to prevent the crime from being committed in the first place by making it harder to commit.

Given the expense of rolling out the new coin, it probably makes more sense from a economic and moral point of view to spend money investigating these crimes rather than preventing them.

gejjaxxita··on They Used To Last 50 Years
Household appliances have become much cheaper (inflation-adjusted and also in terms of hours worked to buy them) in the last 50 years so people are actually saving money. I don't see how you tie any Federal reserve/Central banks policy to the longevity of products.

Indeed, if products were getting cheaper in absolute terms (via deflation) not just in relative terms (inflation-adjusted, as is the situation now) this would not lead to people buying high quality products which last because the expectation would be that they would be cheaper to replace in future.

gejjaxxita··on An Email Thread Between a Developer and Gigster
This is my thoughts exactly. I don't mind signing the opt out because it always follows an interview.
gejjaxxita··on What I Wish I'd Known About Equity Before Joining a Unicorn
A very similar calculation is why I left a startup recently and went into contracting. In many cases the realistic best case scenario from working at a startup isn't as good (financially speaking) as the non-startup alternatives. This leads many people to extremely optimistic assessments of what the future worth of the startup may be (worth > $1billion)

There are many good reasons to join a startup but if the financial motivation is the main one then it's probably not the best route.

gejjaxxita··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
I would be a physicist. I studied it all the way to PhD and I often have a vague regret that I left the field.
gejjaxxita··on How to Ship Side Projects
I really enjoyed reading this. I have been stalling on a side project for some time and this article has given me some ideas with how to proceed. Specifically narrowing down the requirements.
gejjaxxita··on MacBook Pro
I'm surprised by the number of people concerned about the lack of ESC key. I literally never ever use it. Perhaps that's because I've been a Linux user for most of my life and only recently began using Macs. I use emacs as my only editor. What do you use ESC for?
gejjaxxita··on UK votes to leave EU
English is an official language of those countries.
gejjaxxita··on The optional “else” in Python loops
I always strongly discourage the use of things like this construct in any language.

A language is meant to be read not just written. A non-expert python programmer who encounters this will be confused.
