are you saying phones are running general purpose OS and apps?
gegtik··on U.S. senators reintroduce bill to make daylight saving time permanent
Has anyone considered how many IT systems are going to need to be updated to account for this change? This is a little Y2k IT bubble waiting to happen.

If this is proactively folded into overhauling systems for the 2038 problem I could stomach it

gegtik··on The Art of Immutable Architecture
Immutable is another common software domain word. An article posted to yCombinator's "Hacker News" titled "Immutable Architecture" could refer to edifaces that don't change (?) but I was not surprised to discover that it refers to software architecture.
gegtik··on Intel NUC as a back end for development
I have a friend of mine who swears by x2go to further streamline this kind of "remote" dev
gegtik··on The Art of Immutable Architecture
I personally disagree. The title is succinct and well understood by people in this domain.
gegtik··on An Introduction to Hierarchical Modeling
I don't quite understand what's hierarchical about this example. seems like a few different mutually exclusive segments that can then be independently analysed?
gegtik··on Show HN: Gleek diagram maker – UML class, Sequence, ER diagrams, Flowcharts
I Love the idea of these but I feel like we need much better pathing before medium-or-larger diagrams are presentable. Anything not trivial in nature ends up with fairly ugly and unintuitive layout that requires correction.

Maybe a job for ML

Two comments about "prior art":

- This reminds me of plantuml and mermaid: how do you see yourself as different? Is it the reactive display of contents as you type?

- Naming-wise: I'm curious - are you aware that in some places "Gleek" means to spit by directly squeezing your salivary glands?

It could be possible to host it in some way to require proof of ownership as access credentials?
gegtik··on Total Cookie Protection
Awesome work - in retrospect it seems insane it took the world until 2021 to think about this in-hindsight obvious solution for responsible data segregation.

I think you may be hamstringing yourself launching a serious business product with cum in the name
gegtik··on Why doesn’t “Look Around” cover more areas?
One small nitpick

>"Nor did it explain why, a week later, most of Southern Canada (a predominantly English-speaking region) also shipped without POIs"

is followed by a snapshot of Quebec City (the french-speaking capitol of the french province) as evidence.

<Ctrl-F> "environment"

2 hits, both "regulatory environment"

gegtik··on Bitcoin's fundamental value is negative given its environmental impact
I think its wild that when the absurd energy consumption curve of bitcoin used to be brought up the defense was "you're blowing it out of proportion", whereas now it's "so what.. don't you have a fridge?"

(Same pattern I recall about climate change, ice caps melting, etc. Deny until it's impossible and then dismiss instead)

This is cool as heck
gegtik··on Tesla skips 401(k) match for third straight year
That would track if they simply didn't offer 401k matching. If you read the article it seems more like a bait-and-switch.

Employees are in a position to speculatively contribute to their 401K not knowing if the offered match is going to happen.

---- quote ----

It is the third straight year the automaker has not made any contributions to its 401(k) plan, according to the filing.

The Tesla Inc. 401(k) Plan automatically enrolls participants in the plan with a deferral rate of 5% of employees' salaries with the option to contribute more, according to the plan's most recent Form 5500 filing.

According to the Form 5500, the plan allows for an "employer discretionary matching and/or an employer discretionary non-elective contribution subject to certain eligibility requirements." Those requirements were not met for the 2019 plan year, according to the Form 5500.

The nature of those requirements for Tesla to make contributions to the 401(k) plan was not available. The stock price for the automaker was up 695% for the year ended Dec. 31.

gegtik··on Losing faith in UX
Sorry to come at this late but there's discoverability-by-doing and I think it's clear from general user feedback that emacs doesn't have it.

I agree it's very well documented, and I assume your impulse upon reading the previous paragraph is to tell me there's a REPL. it's simply not casually approachable. sorry. ask someone who isn't drowning in koolaid!

This has been the conclusion with real estate - fundamentals to outside economy has been permanently severed in many markets. Why not other assets?
gegtik··on Show HN: Plant-based flavor enhancer – hack your tastebuds to eat healthy
I understand you are selling convenience and sort of an alluring packaging but $40 for 30 servings ($1.33 ea.) compares to as little as $0.53/serving for plain freeze-dried berries, https://www.amazon.com/Travel-Servings-1-15-20-mins-BERRIES/...
gegtik··on Container networking is simple (2020)
This is the first article i see on HN with (2020) in parens to show that it's a dated article

gegtik··on The values of Emacs, the Neovim revolution, and the VSCode gorilla
Nothing to add - just a great article that provides an objective and humanistic review of the field which is extremely refreshing to me.

It invites the reader to consider their values and its mapping to the tooling we use (instead of working backward by having a gut feel of what they like and trying to justify why a specific feature is The Best)
