geephroh··on The Commons Clause is an existential threat to open source
> CC should really be renamed to 'Corporate Continuation' (or abbreviation changed entirely).

'Corporate Co-option' or 'Cash Capture' might also be appropriate...

geephroh··on 'Japan's millennium bug' ahead of Akihito's abdication
Dunno -- I'm still emotionally scarred from dealing with JIS, S-JIS, EUC, etc. in the early 90s. Anyone else remember Ken Lunde's fugu book....?
geephroh··on Ask HN: 2018 Summer Reading List?
You might also try some Abe Kobo, who had a heavy influence on Murakami's writing. His 1970 "Inter Ice Age 4" is a really interesting sci-fi-ish novel involving global warming, supercomputers, and genetic engineering.

+1 - thanks, ddsaso! Worth digging into the thread just for this.
geephroh··on Backblaze's Hard Drive Stats for Q1 2018
They don't have their own client offering, but super-easy to roll your own with their B2 cloud service. There's support for backblaze targets in duplicity, hashbackup, restic and rclone -- my org uses it as a special remote for git-annex, and also use it to back up our synology units (see: https://www.backblaze.com/b2/integrations.html).

2TB would cost you about $10/month for the storage ($0.005/GB), plus $0.01/GB for downloads.

I wish I had three hands so I could triple face-palm.
geephroh··on Beer giant ABI bought many craft brews and is now buying beer rating websites
Copperworks in Seattle is complete end-to-end whiskey. They brew their own wash (the co-owner Jason Parker was the first brewer at Pike in the late 80s/early 90s), distill and age everything in-house. It's all their product.
geephroh··on Remembering Laika, Space Dog and Soviet Hero
And Margaret Fiedler's mid-90s trip-kraut post-rock band, Laika. Their '95 debut album, Silver Apples of the Moon, holds up pretty well.
geephroh··on Why Amsterdam Works So Well for Bikes
And don't forget to mention that with all of the construction downtown over the past few years, even the premier separated cycle-tracks on 2nd and around westlake have been partially shut down and/or re-routed into traffic. A hearty thanks to our Amazon overlords...
geephroh··on King County rolls out Miranda rights tailored for young people
It's actually got absolutely nothing to do with City of Seattle government. This is an initiative by the King County (the county where Seattle is located) Prosecutor's Office and the Sheriff's Department. It does not (yet, hopefully) apply to Seattle Police Department or the Seattle City Prosecutor's Office. So while many of the affected youth may end up benefitting from the initiative if they land at the KC Juvenile Justice Center, if they're arrested by an SPD officer, they're likely to hear the same old Miranda.

(And another point of clarification 'cause I read it too and can't help myself: an opinion piece by George Will isn't exactly an "editorial." I'd seriously doubt that the WAPost editorial board would agree with many of his dubious positions in the column.)

geephroh··on King County rolls out Miranda rights tailored for young people
Ummm....WA actually, as in Seattle. But you're still not wrong since we have mandatory minimums here as well.

geephroh··on Rsync.net – Cloud Storage for Offsite Backups
Absolutely! We've been using it as a special remote backend for our multi-TB git-annex repos, and it has been both painless and cheap. They have supported integrations for HashBackup and Rclone, and you can roll your own with their S3-ish (though not straight compatible) API. They have recently added native snapshots as well.

That said, as others have mentioned, b2's value differentiator is in cold storage. For us, it's largely insurance against failure of our other backup modalities. If you are pulling a lot of data back on a regular basis, the pricepoint is much more in line with the top tier providers.

geephroh··on Ticketmaster is a horrible company
The hidden service fee may not be legal under WA state's fairly strong consumer protections. You can and should report this to the AG's office at: http://atg.wa.gov/FileAComplaint.aspx

If there are enough complaints, things can actually happen.

geephroh··on Czech climber Adam Ondra has conquered the Dawn Wall in record time
Vertical World is great -- two gyms, one at Interbay and the other in Redmond near Marymoor. It can get a bit crowded during peak hours, but the vibe is very friendly and welcoming. I also climb at Seattle Bouldering Project in the CD. It's a massive space with lots of room. Give it a try again!
geephroh··on Czech climber Adam Ondra has conquered the Dawn Wall in record time
I've seen it posted on HN before, but worth mentioning again that climbing also has a culture of open evaluation and continuous improvement as well. Detailed accident reports and analysis from the American Alpine Club are available in an online database (http://publications.americanalpineclub.org/search). Rock and Ice, one of the leading media outlets for climbers, has a regular "Climbing Accidents and Prevention" column (http://www.rockandice.com/climbing-accident-reports) as well as failure testing for gear. Given the "dirtbag extreme sport" image that is often projected on climbing, the vast majority of folks I know are keenly aware of the risks and have an engineer's mindset when thinking about ways to reduce the chance of failure.

Hmmm...actually, that's very unlike many of the developers I know... ;-)

If you liked Valley Uprising, you should check out the documentary Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey, coming out in 2017 (http://dirtbagmovie.com/). Beckey was a pioneer of climbing all the way back to the 1940s -- and is still doing it today at 93. Saw him at Vertical World here in Seattle just a few months ago. Epic.
