geephroh··on The ThinkPad TrackPoint tried to build a better mouse (2020)
Ah, yes, my old ThinkPad TrackPoint. My heart said, "YES!," while my carpal tunnels said, "MERCY!"
geephroh··on NYC Slice
This represents what social media should really be about. I salute you, Liam.
geephroh··on Taxonomy Is Hard
Yes! I think this is a key concept that is often overlooked. Taxonomies -- and ontologies for that matter -- can often serve as a guide to the corpus, particularly when a user has less familiarity with the knowledge space.

And yes, any taxonomy is by definition always a subjective, biased construct. But this is often useful in helping to reveal the preferences and motivations behind the creation and curation of the corpus itself.

geephroh··on Show HN: Discmaster - Browse ISOs from Archive.org directly in browser
So fantastic! And the HTML-brutalism design aesthetic really ties the concept together.
geephroh··on Microsoft Partners with Meta to Bring Teams, Office, Windows, and Xbox to VR
MS Engineer: "Five years in and the Teams user experience is still garbage. At least there's no way to make it any more terrible, right?"

geephroh··on NYU’s firing of Professor Maitland Jones Jr. should frighten every American
And the NY Post's headline writers do know a lot about how to frighten every American.
geephroh··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
MS: "We now concede that Clippy was the most annoying, patronizing and flawed UX feature ever created."

Google: "Hold my beer..."

geephroh··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
That's just like, your opinion, man.

But, seriously, I've become so accustomed to the many shortcomings of macOS UX that using anything else would be like living in a house without loose doorknobs and sloping floors. Embrace the suck.

geephroh··on Rescuing the Compuserve Collection
The colleague who forwarded this to me also sent the blog article from Internet Archive's Jason Scott about the project[1]. Can't wait for those "operations manuals" to show up in the IA!

geephroh··on Primel – guess a 5 digit prime number – each guess must be a prime
I agree -- maybe technically not a digit, but I'd argue it's a UX issue if it is allowed in the leading slot.

But I still love the concept!

geephroh··on How to Save a Ski Town
Lack of housing is, of course, a major part of the problem. And why might you suppose that previously affordable housing in what might have once been a relatively obscure locale is now in tremendous demand?

Knowing a number of folks personally who have been priced out of these places -- often the hometown where they hoped to spend their lives -- might give me a different sense of perspective than you seem to have.

geephroh··on The Yamaha DX7 synthesizer's clever exponential circuit, reverse-engineered
Thanks to the OP for the memories. Worked and scrimped for the DX100 when I was in high school. That keyboard, my buddy's CZ-101, his brother's TR-505, plus copious hair mousse were the recipe for some of the best and worst Depeche Mode covers of all time.
geephroh··on How to Save a Ski Town
Ironic coming from one of the media outlets responsible for destroying so many mountain towns by putting them on "must-visit" destination lists for the IG crowd.

But those $200 camp chairs and $800 puffy jackets aren't going to sell themselves, I suppose...

geephroh··on Sentenced by Algorithm
"Computer programmed decision making" is anything but transparent currently. Just look at the example of Northpointe, Inc.'s COMPAS ("Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions") tool, which purports to measure recidivism risk. Even under threat of lawsuit, Northpointe refused to reveal the underlying source because it is a "protected trade secret."[1]

Are judges biased? Of course, and that is not acceptable. However, the answer is not to surrender our system of justice to unaccountable commercial actors.

geephroh··on Monkey Island PC-speaker music player
If you really want to geek out on the music, the Super Marcato Brothers podcast has done episodes on MI2 - MI4.[1]

(And fwiw, my brother plays marimba and other percussion in MI4. To this day, one of the weirdest gigs he's ever had.)

geephroh··on Defender (1981) by Eugene Jarvis and Sam Dicker
You just triggered my PTSD. Stargate was great for the lunatics who thought Defender was too easy.
geephroh··on List of Special Elevator Modes
Slightly off-topic, but I'd definitely recommend Colson Whitehead's _The Intuitionist_[1] for anyone interested in the intersection of elevators and speculative mysteries. Never thought I'd get the chance to post this to an HN thread...

geephroh··on Catalytic Converter Theft
This has become enough of an issue here in the Seattle metro area that the King County prosecutor's office has a special taskforce, in conjunction with several neighboring jurisdictions. It happens in the city, the suburbs, and even at busy trailheads.

It's particularly concerning because some folks are beginning to take matters into their own hands[1].

geephroh··on I saw millions compromise their Facebook accounts to fuel fake engagement
Except when they are affected by the real-world outcomes of political systems manipulated by bad actors. But that never happens, of course...
geephroh··on Tell HN: SMS-based two-factor authentication is not secure
Services like Authy address some of the loss of device issue, and always a good idea to have a backup token (e.g., yubikey) physically escrowed somewhere like a safe-deposit box.

But it is a whole lot of extra work to set up and maintain long-term, even with the best intentions.

geephroh··on King County, WA bans facial recognition software
I guess I shouldn't have been so coy: SECOND AMENDMENT.

I don't care if you're a Proud Boy or a John Brown Society member. More guns == more violence.

geephroh··on King County, WA bans facial recognition software
And the same applies to KC governmental authorities as well.
geephroh··on King County, WA bans facial recognition software
Well, there's another amendment to the US constitution that is a substantial contributor to the level and severity of physical violence on our streets. But we won't talk about that...
geephroh··on King County, WA bans facial recognition software
But unfortunately, the ban only applies to King County agencies, e.g., KC Sheriff's Department. It does not apply to the numerous independent city jurisdictions within KC such as Bellevue, Redmond, Kent, Auburn, Snoqualamie, etc. who may have their own law enforcement entities, including the Seattle Police Department. And while Seattle does have more restrictive oversight of facial recognition tech through the Seattle Surveillance Ordinance[1] passed in 2018, there are several local governments located inside the boundaries of KC that have experimented with or have indicated they may implement the tech.

TL;DR, those of us who have been working this issue for several years are gratified with the unanimous(!) vote of the county council, but realize there's still a lot of work to do both at the local and state (and national) levels.

geephroh··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
There's also a significant trend in frame design towards steeper seattube angles. This shifts the center of mass forward, especially when pointed uphill which helps keep the front wheel from wandering.

Geometry matters. My 2020 35lb enduro bike with 170/160mm travel climbs at least as well than my 2002 28lb XC bike with 125/115mm travel. That's with a frontend that is almost 5 degrees slacker and probably 100mm longer reach. And flat pedals.

Been riding since 1988...bikes are absolutely better now than they've ever been.

geephroh··on Whistleblower: Ubiquiti Breach “Catastrophic”
You can run the AP locally with the standalone controller appliance in a container or VM[1]. Pretty simple, and doesn't require a UNBT login. Probably still worth doing a factory reset on your AP first, if you're paranoid like me...
