geekuillaume··on Apple Airplay on Raspberry Pi in 7 Easy Steps
If you want to do the same for Chromecast it's not possible yet. Google seems to have locked down their API. There is some open-source projects that are trying to reverse engineer it but the problem seems to be linked to crypto keys used to authenticate real Chromecast devices: https://github.com/thibauts/node-castv2/issues/2
geekuillaume··on To become a software consultant, avoid letting clients pay you for code (2017)
I'm working on a new consultant biz, oriented toward "freelance CTO" for early-stage startups. It's general purpose but provide a non-technical client a better view of the technical aspects of their product. I'm convinced it has a lot of value for this kind of clients.
geekuillaume··on A story about a Kubernetes migration
I'm working with Kubernetes recently and the learning curve is quite hard. I hope the team will improve kubectl to make it more user-friendly (error messages are hard to understand for beginners).

A lot of cloud providers now have a way to easily deploy and manage a k8s cluster on their servers but I cannot find a tools that help with the deployment of a basic service, something like dokku but on Kubernetes.

geekuillaume··on Show HN: BetterSlack – A Chrome extension to make Slack better
One of the problem I always have on Slack or other chats is the 300+ unread messages after being offline for a day or two. I tend to skip everything but sometimes I miss things I should read...

A solution?

geekuillaume··on Important database news from the last few months
On the database subject, I'm working on a new project called DBacked, basically a simple and encrypted database backups as a service. I'm not ready yet for a Show HN (more things to improve on the presentation website) but happy to get your advices ;)
geekuillaume··on Vynchronize – A fun realtime video sync platform for friends
I've worked on this for a personal project (that never shipped), specially for music videos so the synchronization needed to be very precise. In the end, I implemented a basic NTP server via websockets to synchronize all clients on the same clock and then just send them the start timestamp of the YouTube video. I achieved sub 50ms sync 75% of the time, making it work for the last 25% was much harder than I expected.
geekuillaume··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
I wrote a NodeJS API "Kickstarter" to create my REST API quick and deploy them to Kubernetes (or Docker) easily: https://github.com/geekuillaume/nodejs-api-kickstarter. For the front-end, I use React-boilerlate: https://github.com/react-boilerplate/react-boilerplate
geekuillaume··on Rancher 2.0 GA
Tried for an hour to use this version, here's some things that I struggled with:

- PersistantVolumeClaims: I tried to launch a Postgresql workload and didn't get a warning that I should configure EBS before

- I tried installing rancher on my machine and later found out that the nodes need to reach rancher

- I configured Pipeline with Github but I cannot find any ressource about what to do next, I assume that it is a CI service but it's not explicit

geekuillaume··on I've spent the last two years building a new email client
What is the reason to build it as a native software instead of a webapp? Seems like a lot of email clients are now webapps and I can see the arguments why.
geekuillaume··on Show HN: One hostname to rule them all
Got the same first impression. How can a link like this get to the first page of HN?

Without any useful information without having to look on another page, wouldn't it just go into unnoticed?

geekuillaume··on Zigfrid – A Passive RFID Fuzzer
From the comments in the source, the code needs 20 clock cycles to send a new tag, it's running at 125kHz and each tag is 40 bits long. How can this device bruteforce the tag at this rate? Won't it be extremely slow compared to the number of possible tags?
geekuillaume··on Two Infants Treated with Universal Immune Cells Have Their Cancer Vanish
There is some scrutiny.

Abstract: The London team also gave the children standard chemotherapy, they failed to show the cell treatment actually cured the kids. “There is a hint of efficacy but no proof,” says Stephan Grupp, director of cancer immunotherapy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, who collaborates with Novartis. “It would be great if it works, but that just hasn’t been shown yet.”

Résumé/CV: https://besson.co/ - https://www.linkedin.com/in/bessonguillaume - https://github.com/geekuillaume

Email: guillaume@besson.co

I've been working as a fullstack webdev for 4y+ and for YC video companies for 1.5y. I've designed, built and deployed a chat service used by 350k users simultaneously that is now Open-Source (https://github.com/geekuillaume/chatup). I've built and deployed a custom live video CDN handling more than 7PB of data per month. I'm part of the managing team of BoostInLyon, a early-stage startup accelerator in France. Now looking for a full-time remote job to invest myself more in the product.

geekuillaume··on Uvloop: Fast Python networking
I would be interested in seeing the performance difference in NodeJS TCP echo benchmark by using piping instead of reading/writing manually:

  socket.pipe(socket);

You can also use the pins of a RaspberryPi as a PWN output and do the same thing with only 3 inexpensive power transistors: http://mitchtech.net/raspberry-pi-pwm-rgb-led-strip/

Instead of servoblaster I recommend you to use PiBlaster: https://github.com/sarfata/pi-blaster

geekuillaume··on Facebook Surround 360: An Open 3D-360 video capture system
I didn't find the link for all the specification about how to build one at home. Is it really open source ?
geekuillaume··on Show HN: SocketCluster.io – flexible open-source real-time server with pub/sub
I tried SocketCluster for a highly scalable chat platform and it couldn't handle very big conversations. SocketCluster is good but the bottleneck here was NodeJS. I finnaly used Nginx PushStream to do the sub and the pub was handled by NodeJS (with the authentication). It has been used to host chat room with more than 70,000 concurrent clients, scaled on 7 m3.large EC2 instances and one relatively small Redis server.

The platform is opensource and come with a lot of higher level features for chat usage: https://github.com/geekuillaume/chatup

geekuillaume··on Nearley – Simple and fast Earley parser for JavaScript
I finally understood how to do a reverse polish notation from an example of a parser project. This is the kind of Open-Source projects README we should read everywhere. We understand what the project do, how it does it and why it's better than other solutions, plus we have very good examples completely commented and explained.

Really good work ! :)

geekuillaume··on Show HN: Nchan – a pub/sub server as an Nginx module
I saw this feature, but I think there is limitation preventing me to use it, tell me if I'm wrong ;) - I cannot use this to make a call each time a message is published on a pubsub websocket - I cannot modify the message sent by the user (to add user information for example)

Also, what do you mean by multiplexing websockets ?

geekuillaume··on Show HN: Nchan – a pub/sub server as an Nginx module
Okay, thanks for the information. The problem with doing the pubsub in NodeJS entirely is the way NodeJS handle connections. Each is separated and is accompanied by a big overhead from NodeJS. What would be great is a way to interact with the pubsub server not by config but with an API. This would allows, for example, the execution of middlewares when a user publishes a message (to filter them or something else). Right now, I'm using two websockets, one to Nginx PushStream only to receive messages and another to the NodeJS server to publish messages. The NodeJS server is used to parse the messages, format them, authenticate the user and apply the middlewares before publishing the message to Redis. Then, each NodeJS get the message from Redis and POST it to Nginx. The problem here is that there is two sockets for each user and the complexity involved with the communication between Nginx and NodeJS. That's why a really performant standalone websocket engine with an extensive API would be awesome.
geekuillaume··on Show HN: Nchan – a pub/sub server as an Nginx module
I'm using Nginx Push Stream with NodeJS for a high-scale chat system (Soon to be released, completely Open-Source). The dependency on Nginx always bothers me. How hard do you think it would be to do a system like yours but completely standalone ? Then we would be able to integrate it to other languages via plugins (NodeJS, Python, etc).
geekuillaume··on Y Combinator Fellowship 2015 Application Videos
I think some of the votes are fake. Look at the names on some submissions. You should implement a way to verify each vote, right now the scores can be easily manipulated.
geekuillaume··on Y Combinator Fellowship 2015 Application Videos
I've just understood that you submitted TopChart for the Fellowship. Great idea to post it here on HN ;)

geekuillaume··on What happens when you're #1 on Hacker News for a day
I think this post will receive the same amount of viewers than the last one, prepare your servers ! :) Joke apart, your content is quite good, well redacted but you also have a nice and content-centered blog. It's far more readable than other blogs or academic papers and I think it's also thanks to this that you were featured. Keep posting your posts on HN ! Thanks
geekuillaume··on Ask HN: Are there any good open-sourced IRC tools for teams
IRSSI doesn't allow basic needs for a team (not only developpers). It needs persistence and a web based client. I don't think it would be very challenging doing a open sourced service like this but I don't understand why anyone hasn't done it.
geekuillaume··on Show HN: Freader, an open source RSS Reader built with Node.js and Angular
Yes, I aggre, it still need some work to be good, any help is welcome !
geekuillaume··on Show HN: Freader, an open source RSS Reader built with Node.js and Angular
Yep, I still need to hash it before saving it. I found some libs doing that but I wanted to write an hashing function with salt without having to rely on a lib. Need some work !
