geekam··on OS X 10.10 Yosemite: The Ars Technica Review
It helped a little but still crashes for me. I have the same issues with VMWare latest version.
geekam··on Tor Browser 4.0 is released
Question: What are the benefits one gets to run a Tor exit or relay node? Is it plain humanitarian deed or is there anything for profit as well, even a minor one.
geekam··on Skunk Works Reveals Compact Fusion Reactor Details
They issued a correction.

> U.S. submarines and aircraft carriers run on nuclear power, but they have large fission reactors on board that have to be replaced on a regular cycle.

geekam··on New Developer Tools Features in Firefox 34
Finally, the storage manipulation has arrived. Now I can get rid of Firebug completely.
geekam··on Self Employed CV
> AC also suggested anonymizing employers

This may not work in certain jobs where they demand your credentials and want to check them by calling/emailing.

geekam··on Ask HN: Would you like to see notifications in HackerNews?
Yes.
geekam··on This Is Your Brain on Silence
I have no idea about the static noise! Thanks for mentioning, I need to try that. I found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Yb-G7Y9ZR8. Is this what you are talking about?

I usually listen to some classical music. It is less distracting than anything else and is pleasant (depending on what you are listening to).

geekam··on This Is Your Brain on Silence
> Or work remotely from places that respect the sublime power of silence, like certain public libraries, especially academic libraries

True. I have been really trying to find a job that allows me to work remotely. I have an amazing setup at home, more like a sacred space but no job to use it for.

> I know many Zen practitioners from Finland.

How's the immigration of Finland? I might just move there.

> Why do we accept such painful environments?

Some of us really do not have a choice.

> How can some people be so comfortable in full-time office jobs?

Human beings do get used to and adjust in a new environment but I have seen the irritation in my colleagues and I know what's up with them. I believe it is the same thing as I have, just no private space which is crucial.

Example: Someone at work lost their close family and we assume that it's all hunky-dory after we have offered condolences. But again, some of us just do not have a choice.

geekam··on This Is Your Brain on Silence
You are fortunate if you have a quiet room or dark room at work. Even more if you have an office which reduces noise.

Two of my biggest points when I try to find a job -

* As small a commute as possible and hopefully public transportation availability (have achieved this time and again)

* Place where I get an office, quiet room. (Have never achieved this)

geekam··on Vancouver tech surges as U.S. immigration reform idles
Yea, I recently started looking at one of those high-demand fields permanent residency programs that Canada offers. Looks pretty inviting and very little hassle as compared to the US immigration.
geekam··on Dan Ariely’s Timeful App Helps You Better Apply Your Time
I did not face this issue at all. App has not crashed at all for me and I am syncing 5 calendars.

geekam··on The Mediocrity Principle
>> we need to find a way to cooperate with bacteria

We already do, unbeknownst to us, for centuries. [1]

OK maybe we did not decided to cooperate it but isn't that the point here.

"All the bacteria living inside you would fill a half-gallon jug; there are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells"

"The infestation begins at birth: Babies ingest mouthfuls of bacteria during birthing and pick up plenty more from their mother's skin and milk—during breast-feeding, the mammary glands become colonized with bacteria."

geekam··on Firefox 31 for developers
I still use Firebug for Cookie management. I have to try if FF tools support that
geekam··on Tell HN: Take vacation
Sorry, I just saw your response. It is tough on HN to follow up.

Email me at geekamja@gmail.com. I am not a US citizen though, I just work here on a visa. However, the whole process of Permanent residency is so long and slavish.

geekam··on Calling All Hackers: Help Us Build an Open Wireless Router
This seems to be firmware only. Is there hardware for routers that is open or at least ethical?

They seem to be using http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122...

geekam··on Ask HN: How do you back up your drives?
>> I got two different brands to try to minimize the possibilities of them both failing at nearly the same time.

Wow! I forgot to mention but I do this too! Thank you! My wife has called me paranoid of the highest order and now I can point to this comment and feel better that I am not the only one.

>> I've tried online backup services and was really disappointed by the throughput

Yes. I have been disappointed with all of these services.

>> Flickr as photo backup but the retrieval process is brutal.

Yes. I tried apps like Flickery etc but it is just not worth it.

>> I do use Dropbox

Nice idea. I have some files on it but I only use Dropbox (the free version) for files that I need on-the-go for anywhere-access.

>> I do use BitBucket for almost all of my source code and I've been pretty happy with it.

Same here. Bitbucket for some private random experiments and projects, Github for things that I don't care about.

>> I do use Time Machine on an old 1TB

Actually, Time Machine is the only decent backup utility I have ever found. Ever. The ease of use is just mind-blowing. I remember more than a decade ago, when my only chance was to wipe out the system and reinstall the OS or to keep a partition or separate drive for home/data. And with newer OSX, Time Machine can back up to as many drives as you want, which makes it easy for me to take actual direct backups on multiple drives.

On top of it, privacy is such a big concern. Then, it usually becomes a pain. I tried https://www.aerofs.com/ too but then left it because it was too buggy. I will have to try it again.

geekam··on Ask HN: How do you back up your drives?
Not very happy with this but I have 2 (1T) hard drives which I mirror via rsync and back up on those.

I have 1 (1T) hard drive at work, to have an off-site backup.

Plan to use Arq for important files to back on Glacier.

I'd change the two hard drive system to a 4 bay RAID setup using Synology etc.

----

I was thinking of buying Drobo but I guess I was always scared of their "secret sauce" and getting stuck with recovery if anything happened to it.

geekam··on Tell HN: Take vacation
Would you mind sharing which country are you working and what are the visa restrictions, if any?
geekam··on Net neutrality
I see. So, the only way to have fair "for the people, by the people, of the people" elections is to have people fund the elections?

Thanks for a nice explanation.

geekam··on Net neutrality
Honest question from a non-citizen about this line "But he is fighting against very powerful lobbyists..."

I do not understand lobbying? Is it a euphemism about bribing a bunch of politicians? If yes, then why isn't it illegal? If no, then can someone please throw some light on it.

I was not born here in the US so I am always confused by what "powerful lobbyists" can do to deter someone like the chairman of FCC who can literally make the rules (right?).

geekam··on Show HN: Sobrr
I seriously thought this was an app that had something to do with alcohol and getting sober etc.
geekam··on The best 4K monitor doesn’t exist yet
Is that an Apple monitor or someone else's? I am sorry, I've never seen a monitor apart from Thunderbolt display. Is that the one?
geekam··on The best 4K monitor doesn’t exist yet
I'd like to know if anyone is using a 4K monitor and their experience with it. I have an Apple thunderbolt display and I am ok with it.

I do not have a 4K. I use it with macbook pro 15" (retina display) and even though I do not get the same resolution, it does not look flaky at all and is decent enough for reading. Moreover, it connects with the pro using thunderbolt and thus does not require multiple connections for speakers, camera, mic and display.

geekam··on Ask HN: Best way to know your ISP is throttling you?
This is a great advice! I did not want to start another GUI application to track this and command line works great in this case.
geekam··on Ask HN: Best way to know your ISP is throttling you?
I absolutely agree with that. I should have mentioned that in my description that I do not trust either the speed test sites or my ISP tarcking requests for and to speed test sites.
geekam··on Ask HN: Did you start a company whilst employed?
Maybe this should have been a poll.
geekam··on US immigration didn't allow us to build a team here, so we built one in Colombia
I am on H1B and definitely above the market price in terms of cost. Not all H1B's are equal. Some of us studied here in the US and then got a job here. There is another class of H1B workers which are brought on-site. However, most important difference is the H1 vs L1. I have seen more abuse of L1 (and the employees) by companies like Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys etc.
geekam··on Ask HN: Which chair do you code in?
I code and work standing with a high chair to sit for 10 mins per hour, relieving some stress on the feet and legs, if need be.
