An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

It's broader than that. Their whole life is being dictated by extroverts (teaming up with other extraverts, something introverts cannot do). And that's why one should strive to shift as much into extroverted state as possible and defend their opinion and find allies.
gear54rus··on Venus could have been habitable for billions of years (2019)
The last one is facsinating... the sheer amount of stuff that can go wrong on a mission like this is mind-boggling.

Also the frustration they must've felt seeing the same lens cap malfunction over and over.

gear54rus··on Gitlab default branch name changes to main
Another victim of this hysteria.

Will surely make a point to switch it back every time I create a repo.

gear54rus··on Respect Your Power Users
There is also a counterpoint: power users are typically smarter and therefore less likely to be affected by your marketing BS and therefore harder to extract money from. So retaining them is not worth the effort.
gear54rus··on Paradox-free time travel is theoretically possible
Self-fulfilling prophecy, yes.

But the article reads like some sci-fi bs tbh. What's considered the 'same outcome'. If I kill baby Hitler, would the universe create another just like him? Or someone else will do same things? If someone else does them, surely it won't (for example) kill as much people. So someone dead would now be alive in the future (or vice versa). And now the outcome isn't the same yeah?

Sorry but this is bs.

gear54rus··on How to Escape a Sinking Ship
Don't know about you but in my country they test and test those system relentlessly so you get "boy who cried wolf" situation.

Not sure how to avoid that.

gear54rus··on These are called opportunities
Yeah because you will be the one deciding what's normal for a given piece of software... If someone implements that bs policy it surely would be apple.
gear54rus··on Growl in Retirement
Same way it is up to me how you use books you bought (kindle) or songs you bought (any streaming crap nowadays).

If you're shitty enough person (good businessman) you can profit off of anything.

gear54rus··on RIP Google Music
I am wondering if I can configure good old PowerAMP with it.
gear54rus··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I've met people who don't realize how to exploit everyone around them, sure. Don't know how to distinguish them from those who can but don't.
gear54rus··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I would definitely err on the side of believing it and you are yet to provide any concrete arguments to why I shouldn't. Which makes me think you simply don't have them.
gear54rus··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
What if everyone does it but he's just bad at it and that's why we notice.

48 laws of power opening certainly suggests so.

gear54rus··on Is This the End of the Repairable iPhone?
It's happening every year on both desktop and mobile. You can't call walled gardens good sorry.
gear54rus··on Is This the End of the Repairable iPhone?
The first step of the process is to not buy anything apple recognizing there hardly ever was a company more hostile to user freedom both on software and hardware side.

gear54rus··on Chevron Is Refusing to Pay for the “Amazon Chernobyl”
My opinion is they should be forced not only to clean up that particular disaster but also a few others just for trying to put their greedy capitalist wishes above the environmental situation.

Cleaning up those things is certainly a better use of money than buying more cars for CEOs.

gear54rus··on Chevron Is Refusing to Pay for the “Amazon Chernobyl”
Any links to that UFC occasion you refer to?
gear54rus··on Moved a server from one building to another with zero downtime
He should have taken it offline without notifying this brain-dead manager. Probably wouldn't have noticed lol.

And then charge for those 5 hours for good measure.

In general, this stupid trend of wanting 0 downtime makes no sense to me. If you're not NASA, police or other emergency service you 100% can afford a few hours of downtime with scheduling it be forehead.

gear54rus··on Giving GPT-3 a Turing Test
Reading comments on the internet has nothing to do with the test tho. You have to be able to query the agent.
gear54rus··on Giving GPT-3 a Turing Test
Too many googleable questions (like who was the president). Too little 'understanding' type questions like 'Why don't animals have three legs?'

In addition to nonsense questions, I think it would be pretty easy to knock it over with some deeper questions about things they were already talking about. Like asking 'Why don't chairs with 3 legs fall over then?'

gear54rus··on Shoelace 2.0 release: UI toolkit that works with all frameworks or none at all
He's describing only SOME ways to solve those use-cases. No way I'm trading extensibility and programmability of a browser for something some guy thought up to be 'ideal' solution to those cases.

There probably are. I haven't ever seen it work though. If I get into incognito, my ads show something different my normal profile.

In theory, they can track you from your OS/browser combination (and many more variables), but is there a way to test it?

gear54rus··on Only 9% of visitors give GDPR consent to be tracked
Then give it.... in an incognito tab haha.

I'd like to remind you and everyone else about Firefox reader mode. Solves like 99% of this user-enslaving shit.
