An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

Problem is that this willingness might also be tied to intelligence (which in turn might be nature rather than nurture). If you don't enjoy the stimulation that your brain receives when you learn and understand something new you aren't going to be doing that habitually.

Bit of black pill for this thread :)

gear54rus··on US has lost at least three nuclear bombs that have never been located
Should they have exploded? I was under the impression that to actually get the powerful chain reaction you have to spend a lot of energy bringing pieces of fuel together (to the point that explosives are used for that) otherwise they'd just melt and not explode.

Can anyone more knowledgeable chime in here?

gear54rus··on Angular without SSR is faster than Next.js with SSR
What use cases are not good for next? In my experience it doesn't get in your way that much so I wonder what task did you find it can't do.

Can you share what's broken on this config?
gear54rus··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
You confuse legal with right. When the government is out for your money, crypto can be a life saver (as the recent russian example shows).

So maybe you shouldn't dismiss it so quickly just because it never happened to you.

gear54rus··on FP techniques that will help you write better JavaScript
oh yeah, destructuring's nice

I'll give you await (gotta use awkward reduce there) but if you want exit, you're better off with something like `find`

Another advantage is that array functions better convey what are you trying to do with this particular operation.

gear54rus··on FP techniques that will help you write better JavaScript
for is awkward in JS because you get either keys or values and not both

ForEach does get you both.

I don't remember using for loop for at least 3 years previously as a frontend engineer :)

gear54rus··on How can you tell if the company youre interviewing with is rotten on the inside?
Yeah this one works both ways all to well haha. Mah boi probably realizes it too and that's why he's asking it.

gear54rus··on The Missing Link to the Metaverse
Well yeah, but walled gardens are there, right? On mobile phones which appeared after google and facebook. No one cared that their rights got taken away, they just want new shiny toy. VR has all the 'wow' effect to be that toy.

Never will buy any of facebook's shit but I damn well did invest in their stock cuz it's evident that no one sees the problem with selling their souls away be it in the browser or in virtual reality (where there's even more opportunity to influence you).

gear54rus··on Firefox 94
Out of curiosity, why do you need it? Isn't this simply solved by user accounts of the operating system? What's wrong with having it as an addon?

Also did you know that you can launch firefox with -p switch and do it that way?

gear54rus··on Meta
Apple behaves ethically with those file scanners on your devices? Iphone parts that show errors when replaced with the same parts from another phone? Lobbying against the right to repair? Blocking access to 3rd party app stores?

lol. It's just marketing, nothing more.

gear54rus··on Incorrect Lift Theory
OK well we can add that to the simple explanation. If the top airflow is diverted down when it wants to go straight, it would still want to go straight therefore pulling the top surface up, right?.
gear54rus··on Incorrect Lift Theory
They don't do so at the same angle of attack I'd wager. Meaning to fly upside down they have to control pitch in a way that turns the wing to the exact needed angle. Same way they have to control pitch when flying normally to achieve lift.

This pic of real jets doing that side by side confirms what I'm saying (nose is pitched up on the normal-flying plane and 'down' but still up relative to the ground on the inverted one): https://imgur.com/loVcrgO

gear54rus··on Incorrect Lift Theory
In that case the 2nd theory must be correct but they say its incorrect for some reason. Which doesnt make sense to me at all.

They say it's incorrect because it doesnt account for the airflow on the top. Well the flow on the top doesnt strike the wing (except its forward facing part, the wing is pitched 'up' slightly) so it doesnt push it down. But the bottom flow does push it up (it strikes the whole surface of the wing).

Really cant see whats wrong with this simple explanation.

If they were sure enough people would pay for something they'd just make it paid AND shove ads in it.

How does one go about breaking FDE tho? If it's secured by a password that's only in your mind.
gear54rus··on My life after quitting social media
You could say it depends for every platform. It's just some of them employ formats that are cancerous to begin with.

Formats and patterns is pretty much the only things you can judge a social media site on since there's no real way to say that content is universally worse somewhere than other.

gear54rus··on My life after quitting social media
How can you call twitter more authentic when it seems pretty clear (to me ofc) that their stupid length limit is ideally cut out to stir controversy and create confrontation out of nowhere (by virtue of people assuming the worst when there's not enough info presented to them).
