An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

I thought the 'typical person' train has sailed a hundred years ago. You either take time to learn the fundamentals (in this instance, the fact that m$, crapple, etc. are all enemies) or you get exploited.

Notice that linux is not safe from that trend as well: you have to learn tech stuff to operate it in any capacity.

So there's no free lunch in this world, that much is obvious. I don't see where 'typical person' can reasonably survive intact in this tech climate so I also see no reason to bring them up.

I guess mine just came pre-installed without that. But my point still stands, just don't interact with the crap and you're still somewhat safer.

Did you login with ms account? if so, why?

I don't think it can upload if you aren't logged in.

What social/political force do you see opposing that trend? Or why is that a bad omen?
gear54rus··on Instagram tests forcing users to watch adverts
Yes but paying is not going to save us from this pattern. The corps are just going to milk the users via both subscriptions and ads.

And then the users will flock to the new product anyway, as you said. But with paying for a subscription it's just more money ending up where it shouldn't: in the hands of corporations.

How does lock file rely on semantic versioning? It specifies dependencies (and their dependencies) explicitly together with their exact hash

not sure how one can have a problem running something if it installs all the same dependencies and using the same scripts

do you really think slapping crapple for their stupidity for a couple bil is gonna make a sizeable chunk of EU's yearly income?
gear54rus··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
They ain't never been cool. The shit practices they are trying to defend were there from day 1 and are baked into their DNA. Treating their users like stupid animals that don't know what's good for them is what they do. And they will fight tooth and nail to continue to do it. Even as EU tries to kick their predatory ways out of them.

To think there's a hardware thing in 2024 that does not allow its owner to compile and install arbitrary software while still calling itself a smartphone is just laughable.

It's a good thing people are starting to wake up to this even on legislative level.

Not with Monero or mixers. There's thankfully still a few ways to avoid government overreach when dealing with money.
gear54rus··on YouTube is loading slower for users with ad blockers yet again
I wonder if they think antagonizing people that are already fed up enough with ad crap that they install adblock is a good idea.

What do they think is going to happen? We'll just be like 'oh well, sorry, we are going to remove adblock'?

LOL, I'd rather write a bypass myself then do this and give it to all my friends who can't code while I'm at it.
