An engineer passionate about JS and basic tech freedoms (e.g. right to repair, OSS, net neutrality).

I think the web with all its shortcomings is the best thing to happen to tech industry and I want it to succeed. That does NOT mean it should be used for everything.

gear54rus··on NPM flooded with malicious packages downloaded more than 86k times
> entire npm setups inside docker containers

Did you then spend a month or two inspecting that setup? Did you do that after every dependency upgrade?

Also both NPM and PNPM already freeze dependencies for you by default without any arcane docker setups.

gear54rus··on Iroh-blobs
sounds like exactly the sort of thing missing from kde connect
gear54rus··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
Or one can just use old images. Which is what many people started doing after their other fuckup - removing perfectly working web UI from free version.

They just can't stop shooting themselves in the foot that didn't even heal from last time.

The last tag with a working web UI is RELEASE.2025-04-22T22-12-26Z btw.

gear54rus··on KDE Connect: Enabling communication between all your devices
I am a heavy user of it. I don't want to stay connected to it 24/7.
gear54rus··on KDE Connect: Enabling communication between all your devices
No, vpn takes over your network and you have to fight weird issues on different platforms. This seems like a square peg for a round hole.
gear54rus··on KDE Connect: Enabling communication between all your devices
I definitely have a need for this, but I can't stomach same-network requirement.

Maybe they need self-hostable coordination server so that devices can connect to each other through it.

For now it's still 'send to telegram saved messages' for me.

gear54rus··on The early Unix history of chown() being restricted to root
Yeah.. I'm sitting here wondering how many years would it take to remove equally stupid error that says 'private key permissions too open' from ssh-add and friends.

Would save me a wrapper script on my flashdrive that does hacks like loading it from stdin or moving it to temp file.

gear54rus··on Google blocks Android hack that let Pixel users enable VoLTE anywhere
> VoNR

off topic but who the hell names these, a pre-schooler?

"New radio", from the makers of "New folder (1)"

gear54rus··on Just let me select text
Absolutely in the same boat except some crappy apps won't run on rooted devices anymore (to the point I have a special garbage phone that's stock and it has revolut and k&h so far) so there's literally no escape.
gear54rus··on Farewell to Meshnet
To block NordVpn ads on youtube, use SponsorBlock extension - a crowdsourced database of malicious video segments.
gear54rus··on De-Googling TOTP Authenticator Codes
> you're back to 1FA

Which might be exactly what I need if another dumb website wants me add 2fa where I don't want to.

Considering just making a publicly accessible webpage for those codes at this point lol.

gear54rus··on Dokploy is the sweet spot between PaaS and EC2
Actually you have to manually remove port 3000 from container forwarding (which will also override whatever fierwall you have)

If you don't, it's going to be accessible via :3000 AND whatever domain you choose over https:// (provided it can use let's encrypt cert). So it's a bit of a gotcha.

gear54rus··on Dokploy is the sweet spot between PaaS and EC2
I just deployed glusterfs that is mounted on all machines. It's pretty slow by itself but is good enough for secrets that are just read at startup.

Just mount it at the same path on all hosts and then bind-mount it into the container and it will work no matter where the container is scheduled

Have to think about backup strategy yourself tho.

gear54rus··on Dokploy is the sweet spot between PaaS and EC2
> reverse proxy with their docker management UI

I tried SwiftWave and Coolify for that. They seem to support that if I understood you correctly.

gear54rus··on Dokploy is the sweet spot between PaaS and EC2
It has good flexibility. If it won't support them through UI, you can manually define labels for Traefik to pick up in the app config.
gear54rus··on Dokploy is the sweet spot between PaaS and EC2
On the contrary, to me it seemed bare-bones.

Breaks when you use anything but bash as root user shell. Breaks if you have images in private registries with swarm. Breaks if you wanna restrict the API key access to just one project (the key can access all projects lol).

It's a great piece of software, I use it myself. But calling it polished in any way is a bit of a stretch.

gear54rus··on Tor: How a military project became a lifeline for privacy
Are Mullvad IPs somehow non-obvious? I assume all mainstream VPNs are detected by their IPs and slapped with captchas at best (and blocked outright at worst).
gear54rus··on Flipper Zero dark web firmware bypasses rolling code security
So what's the search term for it at least? This stupid gatekeeping while racking views and hype from it is getting on my nerves.
gear54rus··on Modern Node.js Patterns
Slowly, yes, definitely welcome changes. I'm still missing Bun's `$` shell functions though. It's very convenient to use JS as a scripting language and don't really want to run 2 runtimes on my server.
gear54rus··on AI Market Clarity
I'm stunned that they actually gave access for a chat bot to do refunds without human interaction. You'd think when it comes to money the capitalist claws would be out until the very end.
gear54rus··on So you think you've awoken ChatGPT
This is the basis of the whole hype. 'Conversational capability', my ass.

All of this LLM marketing effort is focused on swindling sanity out of people with claims that LLM 'think' and the like.

gear54rus··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
> Then that’s a shitty company and perhaps you should consider not using their service anymore.

That's not always possible. There might not be enough quality competition and I don't see others following my example to beat the shitty company into submission and make them change their ways if I do that.

> Either way I don’t see how that’s relevant to the point. It’s not like the web is any different in that regard.

Web is very different in that regard. You can pry any app open and change basically anything with a single press of F12. Most of the time, people already did that for you and submitted an ad blocking filter for everyone to use. This isn't even close to the crapware of a typical app store.

Web is the last democratic platform we have left.

gear54rus··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
What if you want to see some notifications but not others? But the developers are scammy and didn't separate ads into their own channel?
gear54rus··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
But they do allow showing unblockable ads and notifications, so some 'people' absolutely love that state of affairs because they benefit from it.
gear54rus··on You will own nothing and be happy (Stop Killing Games)
They don't release it unless it also has LAN play option (like they used to before MBA takeover). Otherwise bye bye to jail :)
gear54rus··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
Had no idea this existed even though I'm running a rooted phone for over 10 years now... Thanks so much!
gear54rus··on WhatsApp introduces ads in its app
Does anyone know what's the state of the art way for cutting crap out of android apps? In the same way adblock cuts crap out of web pages?

I assume one would need a Java disassembler at least. On desktop, something like recaf works and allows changing things in classes without the full recompilation.

Is there something like this for android?

gear54rus··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
https://crdroid.net/

One of the best and widely-supported custom Android ROMs. Has a few features on top of Lineage OS and even GPay works out of the box on a rooted Pixel phone.
