I don't know if this guy is coming from a place of sadism, generic attention seeking, or social commentary aiming to call attention to the absurdity of treating AI as alive. If it's the third option it's at least well meaning, but it may be too inflammatory and crude like you said to have the right effect.
If someone thinks my taste in music is lame because I like Dave Matthews Band, I'll wear that. But if someone thinks I don't care enough about the quality of my output to produce it myself, that's a more real and tangible hit to my reputation.
There's some who might use AI as an outlet for nurturing sadism. But that's a very specific kind of person. A typical person will hopefully think about "torturing" an AI as being morally equivalent to torturing a pencil. That's more healthy than the danger we face of a potential mainstream view that AI shouldn't be treated badly because it has feelings and deserves rights.
It always surprises me that people can't take a step back and understand that objecting to today's progress is like objecting to women voting, or interracial marriage. You're just signing up to be mad your whole life and to be seen as a historical curiosity.
People don't laugh at conspiracy theorists over claims that technology will continue to get more annoying. People don't even laugh at conspiracy theorists who claim the rich engage in sex trafficking. People laugh at them over the specifics of pizzagate, qanon, etc.
I'd never buy a Samsung fridge, but ironically I'm loyal to Samsung phones because they've always worked out well for me and I've had bad experiences with Apple and Google hardware. I'd just never buy one of their smart appliances, or any smart appliance for that matter.
It's such a great album. I'll listen to Building Steam With a Grain of Salt on a loop for an hour or two. I looked up tickets for the tour date closest to me but on the second cloudflare check I got annoyed and closed the tab before it finished.
We have to quickly drop the expectation that the platonic ideal usage of AI is what we should expect to see. The typical use of it will be as a cheap/lazy labor machine like you say.
You're right. It's in their power to kneecap the businesses they sit on Twitter and whine about. Twitter, incidentally, being another one of those businesses.
A lot of questions being raised today can be answered by the recently inverted power balance between users/customers and corporations. People have not yet internalized that old assumptions about how corporations fear losing customers are no longer valid. Consumers have become entirely docile and passive. Open hostility to consumers is now a norm. (Obviously regulation is also less powerful and less feared as well.)
The typical person has not had to meaningfully learn math since the invention of calculators. Think about the consequences of that. Now imagine the effect of them ceding general thinking and creating.
My car is much older and I used to hope it would last forever. But now I hope it dies soon enough that when I go to replace it, the options for non smart cars haven't gone away.
Steam trained a whole generation of gamers not to expect real ownership with resale rights. It's sad. The population old enough to even know this is how it used to be is shrinking.
That doesn't relieve people of the responsibility of having enough scientific literacy to understand that 30 years is only an instant on geological time scales. And the fact that we see meaningful change at all on this time scale is very concerning.
It's like trying to argue with someone saying they actually are going to build the whole plane out of the black box. At some point we should just cut our losses.
Likely an Amerocentric comment, yes, that assumes gambling can only be as destructive and predatory as it is in the US. I don't know anything about how it works in the UK but it's plausible to me that it's not as harmful a force there, as you say.
If not illegal, what if it's used as justification to further lock down browsers and operating systems? Apple makes a ton of money selling traffic to Google and has a vested interest in preserving the effectiveness of targeted advertising.
After social media, streaming, crypto, what have you, too many of us have come to understand that advances in technology in this era are going to be used against us more than for us.
