gday2020··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (July 2025)
SEEKING WORK | The Netherlands | Remote (anywhere)

I have almost 10 years experience with Python/Django and worked with many tools/technologies/libraries related to it (Vue, pytest, various CI/CD tools, docker, htmx, alpine, websockets etc). I especially love to dive into odd bugs and optimize slow queries/functions. I am a big fan of testing and documenting.

I maintain a few applications for clients (as the sole developer), but can also work well within a team.

My Github profile with some open source work: https://github.com/GDay. I maintain a fairly popular background worker for Django and have open sourced one of my SaaS applications.

I don't have time right now, but I will be able to take on one new client starting the 12th of this month (~20 hours a week or less).

gday2020··on Show HN: I made a HTMX Playground 100% in the browser
I have been using HTMX with Django for over 3 years on multiple (client) projects.

In 99% of the cases, it works just fine. In the 1% of highly interactive components that aren’t working well with HTMX, you can just put in some Vue or alpineJS. whichever works best for you.

I have migrated all of my own and client apps from a decoupled Vue/django setup to HTMX. It was a ton of work, but it’s awesome having a clean setup with no node modules.

gday2020··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (June 2023)

  Location: The Netherlands
Remote: Yes, but hybrid is okay too (max 2 days/week)
  Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: Python, Django, VueJS and related tools/technologies. I am learning Go at the moment.
  Résumé/CV: On request
Email: hello - at - djangowaves - dot - com
I have more than 6 years of experience with Python and Django and a few years of experience with VueJS (but I am happy to learn a different language/framework). I have been doing contract work for most of my career and also built a few of products from scratch (as a founder). Freelancing has been fine, but I would be open to a permanent full time position. I have worked in teams and also as the sole developer - also worked as the lead developer of a small team.

Haha, nope, not an Aussie. I actually do get that question every now and then when people see my Github! I didn’t think that through 10 years ago when I created it and now I am kind of stuck to it, lol. It can be a great icebreaker though when meeting new people!

gday2020··on 75% of the time we spend with our kids in our lifetime will be spent by age 12
Raising them with good values doesn't mean that they will keep those throughout their life, unfortunately. Quite risky to bet on that.

Writing docs/tests (where applicable) is important to me. I, unfortunately, won't work on a project if tests are not part of the plan. If you currently have an existing app without tests, then I am happy to write those for you.

gday2020··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Could you elaborate on that? I don’t get it.

What animals do in the wild is vastly different from what we do to animals.

gday2020··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Dominion: https://youtu.be/LQRAfJyEsko

It’s about the cruelty that happens in the animal industry. Minks, dogs, gooses, cows, pigs, horses, camels and a lot more. Watching that has changed my life quite a bit.

gday2020··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
> Can anyone clarify what the minimum cost of say, a demo Django project would be now? I come up with $16/month, using a $7 dyno and a $9 postgres instance. Is that accurate?

Yeah, that's accurate. If you need a worker (like celery), then that's another $7, as that's an extra dyno. If you need redis, then that will be another $15.

> Also, if you're testing the deployment process, what's the minimum charge? Say I push a project, test it to see that the deployment worked, and then destroy the project in less than three minutes. Will I be charged for three minutes of resources, or is there some hourly/daily/monthly minimum? I can't find that kind of info anywhere.

They charge you per minute (or per second?) iirc.

gday2020··on Ask HN: Are you leaving Heroku?
Maybe Scalingo? They do have PITR. Very similar to Heroku. I plan to move to them in the near future (also Django app with Postgres).

gday2020··on Show HN: ChiefOnboarding: open-source employee onboarding platform (+ Slack bot)
Sorry, just saw your comment now.

Multiple reasons, but here is why: https://chiefonboarding.com/blog/going-open-source

AGLPv3 permits anyone that makes changes to it to open source it. This makes sure that all code will stay open source and a company can't just run with it and perhaps resell it without making it open source too.

gday2020··on Show HN: ChiefOnboarding: open-source employee onboarding platform (+ Slack bot)
Hi HN,

So, I have been working on this for the last 4 years. It used to be a SaaS, but I have recently decided to make it open-source, but still provide support and hosting for it. You can deploy it yourself with docker (compose).

If you want to read how it works (with pictures and such), then it's best to read through this: https://docs.chiefonboarding.com/Howto.html.

gday2020··on Lessons from Running a Sale That Earned 3 Month's Profit in a Week
You are right. I am a mod of a fairly big subreddit (over 2 million). Reddit really doesn't care.

If the account is new enough and links are spammed within a short amount of time, they are getting auto banned/flagged.

Accounts that are a bit older can get away with it. Sometimes those posts get removed automatically, but that's pretty unlikely. At our sub, we do flag every post that contains a link automatically. In 80% of the cases, this is spam and we delete it.

We have had spammers that kept coming back with new accounts. We have reported it numerous times to Reddit, but we highly doubt that any action has been taken. Especially accounts that try to promote youtube videos are hard to block.

It's generally up to the mods to take action. I do not believe that the 10% rule is enforced in any way.
