gcb1··on 30C3 Recordings
also liked the script your car. great classic embed hardware probe demo. and i always postponed learning can bus. extra points for using an eeepc and keeping the 3c tradition alive, even if in his case seemed to be against his will.
gcb1··on Netflix’s new plan: save a buck with SD-only streaming
add windows and .net and silverlight and DRM monitoring in the stream app and bogus graphic card drivers and other concurrent programs fighting for bandwidth on the same machine such as torrents with the awful bandwidth scheduler of said windows, and you have your answer somewhere.
gcb1··on Netflix’s new plan: save a buck with SD-only streaming
that shows a total lack of touch to their own product, or the more probable answer, they are bleeding thanks to content owners boycoting them and so they are scrapping the bottom end.

see how this thread is full of joyfull clients on their first months? everyone loves it... until they ve seen all of it, which is very limited to begin with. and they only add things like sharknado...

gcb1··on On The Information and How We Operate
to properly use [] on a recorded interview is overkill. just glance on the transcript... there is barely a proper english phrase there. the whole thing would be 80% brackets just to make it grammatically correct.
gcb1··on On The Information and How We Operate
the fact that this is "news" at all is embarrassing to all women that managed to become developers, ceos, etc. period.

this shouldn't be here, in two or three front page items. and this shouldn't have even been asked on that interview.

gcb1··on A useful Caps Lock key
sad how linux fell behind on keyboard customizations.

used to be the only place where i could replace caps-esc and use altGr for accents.

now windows with autokey(?) allows me to use caps as esc if pressed once, or ctrl modifier if pressed with another key.

i cant find a way to do that in linux now.

gcb1··on The case against Kim Dotcom, finally revealed
i think you missed his point completely.

there is a industry with a lousy product, that can make a much better offering instantly with very little effort, but they are to afraid to do so.

the consumer who opt for piracy is not actively choosing to harm the content creators. but the ecosystem that preys on those content creators is killing itself by preventing people from even buying their products with comfort, and in doing so is harming the content creators.

think about all the bands that started to distribute their own music. nin is way better off. as well as their fans. the only casuality is the record labels and others that used to prey on the band, who used to provide a benefit for the fans when distribution was physical. now, all they do is screw the content creators and fans in a vain attempt to remain relevant and siphoning dollars as they are used to.

gcb1··on The case against Kim Dotcom, finally revealed
if i can watch action movies on a 20 feet screen with a $100k audio system for $8 to $12 at my local theater, why would i want to watch it on choppy netflix on my cheap tv a lame stereo?

people who download that don't care much about the movie. they would be watching commercials on cable tv and be likely entertained. there is no sale lost to the studios there.

the lost sales are people looking for classics or hard to find titles. and those are hard to find in pirate sites, and nowhere to be found on netflix, amazon.

edit: the comment from ChuckMcM bellow describe why that happens.

gcb1··on The case against Kim Dotcom, finally revealed
yeah, as the grandparent post said, they still have their heads up their %%%

lets see: pirate sites = i can watch the movie anywhere. cost some time.

netflix, amazon, hulu = i can watch on windows, android, ios, wii, xbox, several set top boxes such as roku, smart tvs. cost 10 to 200 per month.

that aberration you linked = i only get a single image telling me to download the ios app. im not even sure how much it costs or what they have available.

gcb1··on Gluglug X60 Laptop now certified to Respect Your Freedom
do that with all my laptops. specially work issued ones ridden with remote access for IT.

a post it cut with just the glue part works fine, easy to replace and leaves no marks.

gcb1··on Cisco's Open Source H.264 Codec
moz would have to foot the 6mi.

cisco pays 6mi, and them mpegla returns 3mi to them for their patents in the pool. and if the format becomes ubiquitous, they get any few billions from this same pool from their competitors when they also license it.

they are still the bad guy in this.

gcb1··on Cisco's Open Source H.264 Codec
vp8 is as free as this.

just replace mpegla with google.

gcb1··on The microhydro plant
even if you didn't, you'd still have to work 8h a day... that usually pose a problem to things like these.
gcb1··on Ask HN: Anybody use an online IDE? Why?
i tried a few, mostly to code easy features while sitting in the couch with a tablet... didn't like any of them. exchanged some messages with the founders and never felt like coming back. i think we are a long way still
gcb1··on Steam Machines and Steam Controller shipping to beta participants December 13th
steam for still sucks in the way requires full control of my box to games. i only run it in a vm or spare machine, limit the games i can use. if that box is any good, it will be very good for people with a minimum security concern for their main computers
gcb1··on AT&T offers gigabit Internet discount in exchange for your Web history
30% off for your personal info... when the competitor price is free (also for your personal info).

att really believes uverse tv will be that good of a differential competing against free?

gcb1··on AT&T offers gigabit Internet discount in exchange for your Web history
tor exit nodee.
gcb1··on Vim3D – A new 3D vi clone [video]
100% of this is already common place. i doubt any Maya pilot even has the tool bar on the screen.

im not even a frequent user and i only move stuff around with hjkl and qwe. not to mention the backtick (or space bar?) to open up the one liner prompt to revolve, extrude, etc...

gcb1··on Vim3D – A new 3D vi clone [video]
so are most OSes...
gcb1··on Google’s $179 Moto G puts every single cheap Android phone to shame
hope you don't plan to travel. nexus 5 would work on most network. also get ready to be disappointed with the camera. even the motoX gets owned by old nokia phones.

the sad thing about google/moto only churning out low end phones, is that we now will have to give in to weird rooting/unlocking if we want basic features, like a simple sd card or removable battery.

i dread the day i have to abandon my old nexus and start fiddling with Odin and whatnot to unlock a high end phone. (odin is code you have to use to unlock samsung phones. nobody has the source, and it is allegedly stolen property from samsung... shady stuff, and that is what will update you phone bootloader. no thanks)

anyway, really wanted to have a high-end option that was free as the nexus claim to be (claim because the radio, camera driver, etc are never open source. but thats the best we can get, well, could.)

gcb1··on CyanogenMod Installer Application Removed from Play Store
it only has the possibility to brick the phone because they went the extra mile to try to deny access to doing it.
gcb1··on What the Fluck
my only gripe with the article is the meaningless title (if you are going for the cool title, at least add a descriptive subtitle) and the videos are now too standards compliant.
gcb1··on Once-great SSD manufacturer OCZ filing for bankruptcy
please, unless you compared their offering with other ssds or used their support forums, this comment is as empty as it can be.

ssds are better than spinning media, so what? even the worst one would make you happy. this is not the point. they constantly send one device to reviewers and then put lesser specs on the shelfs, or less immorally, just updated the revision silently to cut costs. i have a couple of them. i regret buying because what i got was something equivalent to something i could have gotten cheaper. also, admins often mocked people on the support forums.

gcb1··on CyanogenMod Installer Application Removed from Play Store
let me see... google and the open handset aliance advertise an open source OS, that you cant install without voiding warranties and bending to proprietary radio and firmware code. just like pc manufacturers of the 80/90s (bios was reverse engineered from IBM and then tightly controled by ami. it only looked slighly open because IBM was much more closed. same with android standing next to apple.
gcb1··on How to Defraud Display Advertisers with Zeus
but how does the browser interpret a hidden window like the one shown? maybe it even sends out that the page is in view... and even if not... how long until the malware coerce it to say so?

and you are the only one here in the right track. the ad ecosystem IS moving to a bill per viewability model. though for the wrong reasons (drive advertiser expending down, like they did artificially with paying for click instead of display)

gcb1··on Find the most reliable and fast public CDNs

gcb1··on New TLDs have arrived
this will also get tons of money from ppl "investing" in another domain rush.

$120 non refundable fee for meet.singles, date.singles, etc... multiplied by every sucker out there... it is a considerable non-refundable fortune

gcb1··on Jury: Newegg infringes Spangenberg patent, must pay $2.3 million
this is the sole reason i rather buy from them instead of amazon. before those cases, i steered clear of newegg as i do of any merchant that bores me with coupons and rebates.
gcb1··on FDA Orders Genetic Testing Firm 23andMe to Halt Sales
its just a matter of knowing the game. big farma kills millions, nothing happens. small company still not pleasing the right people, huge fine/closed/etc

yes, i am implying the gov is corrupt. it is.

and this the reason everyone pays hundreds of dollars for catheters and such, and any company that tries to improve the design and price of those items are all in legislation or royalties limbo.
