gcb0··on WeChat and the Surveillance State
I sense from your post that you confuse democracy with capitalism.

Also Brazil and Russia are not democratic (right now). Neither have a democratically elected leader.

gcb0··on Plot to steal cryptocurrency foiled by NPM
That's wrong too.

What they did was to allow komodo to, vigilante style, outright steal the coins, and hold them hostage until you entertain them with proof of ownership/identity and whatever other ridiculous requirements they come up with.

But it's npm and kleptocurrency. Nothing of value lost.

lazyness of the people trying to stop those scams should amaze you.

Nothing proves the scammers are not using those other alternatives for all you know.

"...and lack of reviews".

If they had reviews (reason we had affiliate code) organic search would work just fine.

Instead we give google the affiliate cut, in exchange of the privilege of tweaking our content to their search.

gcb0··on A new census shows how a Brazilian favela works
Favelas are neighborhoods where lots and lots of families live their everyday life.

It has crime just like any other place (e.g. a Phd in UCLA mapped gangs in LA, santa monica and Beverly hills had the most count of gangs and members) but the police treat favelas as their war ground, causing an artificial firepower escalation. And the reason is twofold: by twisting public opinion that favelas only have criminals you can relinquish all forms of state spending (culture, etc) and you can maintain a tight grip on the local political representation during elections, and favelas have lots of votes.

In sum, it has nothing to do with the gangs per-se. It's more artificial public policy.

gcb0··on Introducing Librem Social
I loved purism. Got their laptops. But the OS and most software (and i am sure this social network too) is a fly-by-night operation. At best!

The laptops too, in a way. They are nice but for the price should have been nicer (e.g. no USB C charging or monitor out, etc, for a machine more expensive than a maxed out mac or HP). Everything they do just scream "we slapped those things together. Now pay us".

Now they are riding the waves of the librem5 hype... and i am sure they will deliver just because the competition on mobile phones is abysmal.

gcb0··on Betrayed by an app she had never heard of
Thank you!

I know it is now too late for me as FB already have my contact list, but will do (and advertise) that for now on.

gcb0··on Betrayed by an app she had never heard of
Blackberry android phones have a feature where it notifies you when any app accessed some resource that requires OS level permissions, such as contacts, gps, etc.

Whatsapp and other facebook apps, access my contact list every 3 minutes.

gcb0··on Gmail really wants me to say yes
> [...] experimented with [...] negative options [...] causes a hit to our metrics.

I have very bad opinion on this feature overall, but now i am curious; how did you measure people wanting to say No and not finding a quick reply? And then how did you measure the quality of the No available on the test set?

gcb0··on Gmail really wants me to say yes
Sounds good! Thanks.

gcb0··on British man banned from US because of text to American girlfriend
You very wrong on the assumptions.

The person with the rubber stamp issues you the I-94 in the USA. That is the ultimate say on how long you are allowed to stay. The visa is only one of the many things they consider.

gcb0··on “Python's batteries are leaking”
most companies i've worked for have special packages for perl/python/php/etc that compile the interpreter without support for system calls, for example.

That alone have probably paid of handsomely over the years considering all the XSS we patched, which could very well have been full network compromises.

gcb0··on “Python's batteries are leaking”
name one package you missed in those 5 years.

I see your comment as the goal, not the problem.

gcb0··on What Ancient Romans Used Instead of Toilet Paper
The legend goes that bidets where associated with whorehouses in literature from europe (as most literature not focusing on body fluids would not have reasons to mention bidets), so that when apartments started to be retrofitted for plumbing (initially for a kitchen!) in the USA, the extremely puritanical society left the bidets out.
gcb0··on “Python's batteries are leaking”
And perl solved that perfectly: just let the OS/distro solve the 100s of packages. And it have been solved, despite you claiming otherwise on your last paragraph.

When did you have to use cpan in a modern system? Compare that to how many times you had to use pip.

Now, if you use a crappy OS or distro (or god forbid, some container built by you have no idea who on top of nobody knows what) then yeah, you are bound to do the leg work yourself, but you will be doing that regardless of the language/subsystem you are trying to use in that case.

Not to mention that it is the only way to do things professionally. For example, if you must have a system that parses XML but for company policy is not allowed to have even the means of performing a network request. With python you either have both xml and an http library and whatever else included and you will either have to do a special package with a striped down python+xml only or get a corporate exception. While on other languages you can install only the xml parser component package and your code will run happily and be compliant with company policy.

gcb0··on Who killed Olof Palme?
isn't that literally the job description for the cia?

for a more realistic view, see the interviews with LAPD people from the recent documentary on Bob Kenedy's assassination in LA.

it makes the case pretty clear, and show that people did talk. but that the good media, not wanting to promote conspiracy theories, silenced. The guy was pretty much boasting about his participation for decades and nobody cared.

hum.. that's exactly the point of not comparing both things.

Reading a book, as bad as it is, start a well informed debate, that might improve the world. You can't critique or remedy something you doesn't know exists.

While hating a particular group of people (because you read the book, or didn't pay attention in life, or any other reason) does not improve anything.

gcb0··on Grocery Outlet S-1
hum. sounds like the worst of both worlds...

I can almost understand the value for the chia pudding thing that still lack a variety of off-brands. But haagen daaz, toblerone, et al are just the same regular product today (sometimes even lower quality than the local small brand of icecream/chocolate for example) with a markup because of the brand, somewhat justified because the brand evokes attention to quality (e.g. no expired product on display) and probably pays for better placement (e.g. top shelf or a dedicated store). Now you have the so-so product from the name-brand, with the markup removed because you removed the quality and placement! Is marketing for those brands alone that good?
