gcanyon··on Blindsight (Watts Novel)
> a universe where there's no doubt that there is no god

Do you mean that the universe itself provides clear, incontrovertible evidence there is no god? Or do you simply mean that in the universe portrayed, none of the people happen to have any doubt about the non-existence of god?

gcanyon··on So you think you could be an electrician?
I installed an oven in my house. The oven was on a 30(? it's been a while) amp circuit, and the new oven kept blowing the breaker that had kept the old oven happy.

The stove was on something like a 60 amp circuit, so rather than try to rewire the panel, I patched the oven into the stove's circuit, because it was way over capacity.

That said, the wires were beasts: single-strand copper, maybe 6 gauge (over a tenth of an inch in diameter) and did not want to bend at all. I ended up going back to Lowes three times to get bigger connectors. In the end it was a box of aluminum half an inch wide, with a tube down the middle and a screw-in on the side to hold the wires in place.

I got it done, but it was a pain from start to finish. And of course with that many amps at play, every time I touched anything I first went to every single person in the house to tell them what I was doing, and not to go near the breaker box.

I would not want to do that for a living.

Nanosystems! I read Engines of Creation in the '80s, and then sadly found that I was not up to speed enough to fully take in Nanosystems.

> Note: this is very similar to Pfizer’s COVID vaccine trial which professed to be “95% effective” against COVID-19, but in reality only created a 0.8% reduction...

This is confusing relative risk reduction and absolute risk reduction. Intentional or not, this causes me to discount/question everything written here.

gcanyon··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
It has to be the case that OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are doing internally what they accuse others of doing: using expensive advanced versions of their models to train lighter-weight more efficient models. Have they explicitly acknowledged that Astra was used to train Sol?
gcanyon··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
The best people in general are annoying.
gcanyon··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
I used to make a vegetarian option without the sausage if people asked. It's so long ago gluten-free wasn't really a thing.

Pasta sauce was my thing. I used to boast that I made the best there was. It was good, but I know better now what really great sauce is, and mine was very good, not great. It did have the advantage of being different every time, since I did everything without measuring.

gcanyon··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
In my twenties I made spaghetti every Saturday night. This started as throwing some Ragu in a pot and adding some spices, and eventually morphed into crushing my own tomatoes and cooking over most of the day. I did this every week over years. A varied group of friends came to eat each week -- no plan, no notice, just come over if you have nothing else going on. It's how I met my wife -- I never would have had the courage to ask her out on a real date, but "I make spaghetti for my friends every Saturday, you should come over," was easier. It's been years and I don't often make spaghetti anymore.
gcanyon··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
> “Every Monegasque resident is now less than 200 metres from a free public charging point”

Given the area of the country is 2km, even given its narrow geography that would take all of 50 charging stations to achieve...

gcanyon··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
One thing that always puzzled me was how the gas engines in hybrids were so efficient. Technology Connections has a great video explainer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnUFH5GX_fI

tl;dw: constant RPM and a weird stroke geometry where the power stroke is longer than the other strokes to extract more energy from the expanding gasses.

gcanyon··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
Ooh, interesting -- I didn't know what. Obviously it's a curiosity, not a real annoyance unless I'm trying to calculate how many days my great-grandfather lived :-)
gcanyon··on Analyzing Frontier Model Progress with My Favourite Game: Prince of Persia
"now char coming but movement everything wrong ... prince is not in floor"

I'm assuming a language barrier on the part of the author. I wonder if the models would do better being prompted in the author's main language.

Excel now support lists and arrays as values in a cell, but it still thinks February 29th, 1900 is a thing because 40 year-old backwards compatibility?

gcanyon··on I said no and Apple said yes
This has been the case for me with the Dock for twenty-plus years. You can't kill the Dock. You can hide it. You can set the delay until it appears. But you cannot kill it, it just respawns.

And it's such a terrible waste of memory/screen space/an edge of the display.

And of course I said yes, and Apple said no, to Launchpad, an actually useful tool ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

gcanyon··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Trump wants the violence. There's a difference between protesting a government that will follow the rules even if the people don't, and protesting a government that won't follow the rules even if the people do.
gcanyon··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
1. Yeah, just because I'm not proud today doesn't mean I've been a booster of every other thing the U.S. has done for the past quarter century. 2. That said, let's not pretend that now is no different than any other point in our history. 3. And finally, I think I am reasonably well informed, since my wife is the director of a non-profit working on this specific issue.

gcanyon··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Agreed!

Despite the fact that trainyard has been defunct for ~8 years, I didn't want to simply clone it.

I tried to give a similar, but not the same, experience -- I'd be very curious to know how close you think I came.

gcanyon··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
About fifteen years ago a puzzle game called Trainyard came out for iOS and took my dev team by storm for a few weeks. It ceased getting updates some years ago and isn't on the app store anymore. So I came up with a variant on it and just put up https://www.geoffcanyon.com/lightyard.html I need more puzzles to include in the base pack, if you come up with something interesting, export it and send it to me!

I think they mean there was a greater variation in reluctance than might be expected, or that there was some serious arm-twisting to get people to go along, which had future consequences.
