gbrindisi··on Google Apps Script for Gmail to filter and sort email from Gitlab
I've used https://github.com/mbrt/gmailctl/ to tame my inbox with some degrees of success, but gmail filters are just so flaky.

Next step in my things-to-try list is to just download the inbox via imap and sort it out locally.

gbrindisi··on Fortification, Part IV: French Guns and Italian Lines
The city of Lucca in Italy is a perfect example of walls evolution as there still are the roman, low medieval and renaissance walls.

gbrindisi··on Plans you're not supposed to talk about
This reminded me of https://scholars-stage.blogspot.com/2018/08/tradition-is-sma...
gbrindisi··on PSA: uBlock/AdBlocks on Chrome to lose function thanks to Manifestv3
my favourite feature of tree style tab is coloring tabs based on content: yellow search, orange news, green internal stuff etc
gbrindisi··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
Thanks for your work! FYI I've submitted a !Bang on DuckDuckGo to search Marginalia (see: https://duckduckgo.com/bang). Waiting for it to be approved.
gbrindisi··on Is Microsoft Stealing People’s Bookmarks?
I wanted to do the same, and in the end gave up in favour of a simpler approach: I drop the bookmarks in my notes, I can tag as I please, less moving parts and it's easier to search. But I would still like to see someone figuring this out!
gbrindisi··on My Hacker News knowledge assimilation stack
I love reading about this personal automation hacks.

I do also live in my note taking app, Bear, and I tried a similar system with bookmarks: I was using Pinboard and set up automation to ingest bookmarks into Bear directly. It didn't work out because 1) too clunky, too many moving parts 2) automation was removing ME from the process, I was not able to "curate".

What I do now is just dropping relevant links in my notes, creating new ones when needed. It's dead simple and ugly and yet works way better than any other bookmarking system I tried.

Creating notes from ebooks is definitely more complicated, because we are constrained by the Kindle interface. I have yet to try connecting the highlights to my notes, thanks for the inspiration!

gbrindisi··on Memory leaks are crippling my M1 MacBook Pro
how is the performance of the emulated vm? I would like to do something similar but I am reading mixed opinions
gbrindisi··on Computer-1 mini-ITX Chassis
wow that's a beauty!
gbrindisi··on Computer-1 mini-ITX Chassis
Beautiful but no thanks, too expensive.

I am constantly searching for good itx cases but at this point given the prices I see I’d rather buy an Ender3 and print one myself.

gbrindisi··on The most brilliant bookshops in the world
I'd like to add Libreria Acqua Alta in Venice, very charming. The place floods when the lagoon water rises: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=libreria+acqua+alta+venezia&iax=im...
gbrindisi··on Waydroid – Run Android containers on Ubuntu
perhaps the containerized environment looks like a rooted phone?

Due to vague security requirements most banking apps refuse to run if the phone has been rooted.

gbrindisi··on Google’s ‘Project Hug’ paid out huge sums to keep game devs in the Play Store

gbrindisi··on Google and Facebook mandate vaccines for employees at U.S. offices
I wonder if this will help the fully remote working cause, with such a polarizing policy some (a lot?) people might as well advocate more strongly to not coming back to the office
gbrindisi··on Kubernetes is our generation's Multics
> The thing that will kill Kubernetes, though, is Helm. I'm out of time to write this comment but I promise a thorough analysis and rant in the future ;)

Too much of a cliffhanger! Now I want to know your pow :)

gbrindisi··on Watch 1k illegal Bitcoin PCs get literally steamrolled, experience justice
such a waste
gbrindisi··on GPT-J for text generation: hardware requirements
Ah here I was - a total amateur eager to learn more - hoping to add a TPU unit on a rpi cluster to run it.

(thanks for sharing!)

gbrindisi··on Second-guessing the modern web (2020)
Same argument can be applied to kubernetes too
gbrindisi··on OpenFlights – airport and airline data
does anyone know any current dataset I could query to check historical routes status?

Since the pandemic I've found plenty of airlines selling tickets and systematically cancel the flight a few days before. I was looking to scrape some data to avoid this kind of unreliable flights.

gbrindisi··on Content Writing for SaaS Companies – A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
This right here is the reason why search engine results are this shitty nowadays.
gbrindisi··on Netflix Made Record Profits in 2020, Paid a Tax Rate of Less Than 1 Percent
Really wealthy people are probably not paying much income taxes to begin with
gbrindisi··on Ask HN: How to write documentation for a medium size engineering org?
Backstage is such a delight
gbrindisi··on Ask HN: Why are people publishing FAQs/articles on Medium instead of Gist?
Medium allows you to set a canonical tag, so authors can direct SEO juice towards their own websites. Github/gist doesn't have that.

In practice 99% of what you read on Medium is syndicated, they are in the business of trading an audience for content (that in turn will grow their audience).

gbrindisi··on Show HN: OpenFaaS template for headless Chrome and Puppeteer
Hey Alex I just wanted to say that I read your blog with pleasure! Thanks for all the sharing

gbrindisi··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
that was an interesting rabbit hole you sent me into, thanks for sharing!
gbrindisi··on Ask HN: What reviews sites are reliable?
I enjoy reading wirecutter but I had this thought: if there is a good product for category X that is sold directly by the manufacturer without any affiliate program, will Wirecutter even bother reviewing it?

I suspect Wirecutter is great for the subset of products that are sold via affiliates (which thanks to Amazon are plently)

gbrindisi··on I logged my activities at 15-minute intervals for the whole year
I am curious, can you share the reddit post?
gbrindisi··on Dockerfile Best Practices
Very nice! Taking care of Dockerfiles is such a low hanging fruit to prevent so many issues down the line.

If you are interested I’ve collected more best practices to prevent more common security issues: https://cloudberry.engineering/article/dockerfile-security-b...

gbrindisi··on Ask HN: Can non degree-holder use the title Software Engineer?
Not in the US. In some european countries the title “engineer” is indeed protected by law.
