gbrayut··on You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky (2015) [video]
As someone who watched the live stream of the original presentation from the Stack Overflow lunchroom I can confirm that the video is missing some context. Definitely a bit of house style and a throw back to some old school memes, but overall an informative and humorous training session that I am glad was made public.

Joel usually gives great presentations, and recently he even started personally editing our internal company update videos (and complaining when we don't show appreciation by up voting them :-) because the first one was a bit dry.

So you are saying that a new major software release that is less than a month old still has some bugs? I am shocked. Shocked! Well, not that shocked.

If you can't take the bleeding part of bleeding edge, wait for things to mature before using them. Bitching and whining that they didn't create a perfect product out the gate only belittles the hard work it took to get a new product out the door.

This is how software releases work in the real world!

You can also use things like Get-Command (with options for -Verb, -Noun, -Module filtering) or Get-Member to inspect types/methods/properties. Very helpful when learning a new area.

Thanks for the writeup! I enjoyed reading it and comparing with some of our vendor/stack choices.
gbrayut··on Ask HN: Best monitoring system?
We've been dogfooding the new Stack Overflow Documentation system for Bosun, so you may find some better examples at http://stackoverflow.com/documentation/bosun/topics which just opened yesterday. If you see anything missing you can request a topic or flag an example as needs improvement.

Actually we average less than 10% CPU on the web tier... so anything over that warrants investigation. Graph of CPU during today's issue at https://twitter.com/Nick_Craver/status/755793398544601088
gbrayut··on Ask HN: What do you think about the new curved ultrawide (21:9) monitors?
I'm curious if anyone uses a curved ultrawide in portrait mode instead of landscape. I've got a 27in 16:9 in portrait mode right now, and it seems like a curved display might work better so long as the viewing angles still work.
gbrayut··on Uber Data and Leaked Docs Provide a Look at How Much Uber Drivers Make
I believe they are also 1099 contract workers as opposed to having W2 employee classification. 1099 means you owe self employment taxes, which can take a significant cut out of your gross earnings (ball park 10-15%). You also may have to make quarterly estimated tax payments or you can get a penalty fee when you file in April.

Looks like https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2561815-uber-driver-questi... shows some of the tax issues related to being an Uber driver.

gbrayut··on Stack Overflow and Discouraging Beginners
Sounds like you ran into one of the spam prevention mechanisms. I've done the same thing before, and usually as long as you do some editing and don't just copy/paste the answer it should let it thru. Or sometimes I leave a comment with a link to the other answer so people can find it.

Sorry you had a bad experience with the site. I hope you try contributing again in the future if you get a chance.

gbrayut··on CloudFlare is ruining the internet (for me)
I am on the SRE team for Stack Exchange and Stack Overflow mentioned in the article. We have had a lot of issues with 503 errors (Cloudflare cannot reach our origin servers) occurring in various regions on a monthly basis. That combined with a few other issues (DNS change delays, missed deadlines) has lead us to look for another CDN provider.

We just signed a new contract and plan on switching off CloudFlare in June.

We have been primarily using Intel NVMe storage for our database servers since fall of 2014 with no major complaints. Our high end desktop/laptop systems are also using the latest Samsung NVMe M.2 drives which are screaming fast.
