gbraad··on Grand MS-DOS Gaming General MIDI Showdown
The SC88 emulator from The Usual Suspects does sound good: https://youtu.be/LFDmDiaVk8o
gbraad··on Grand MS-DOS Gaming General MIDI Showdown
Things have improved a lot, like nuked sc55 but also Mame adding mu50/80. In short, this is very subjective... Though most games were accounting for the GM standard anf sounds used by the MT32. Overall XG was better, and so wtere those sounds, but we're for a different usecase and that is why they can sound slightly off. This is mostly that the games were dealing with the limits and quirky sounds of the mt32 and related period devices, like the sound canvas.

Personally I never liked most dos game soundtracks, as sample based sounds on the Amiga were overall better (unless they were Sierra games who sampled pretty bad mt32 sounds and blips and bleeps). I made music with the DB50XG over MIDI with my Amiga if I needed 'professional' sounding instruments. XG and a DR660 sounded better.

gbraad··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Expect the 6AM layoff email to get rid of all meatbags, sent by the agent.

J/K, scary as several studies have indicated they werent able to keep a vending machine profitable. Anyway, ...

I do think a large amounf of tasks can be automated, though i believe supervision remains necessary for most. Especially when process can be externally influenced by injection. People can be influenced, but are (slightly) more judgemental

gbraad··on LG says we're fake news [video]
Devices that connect to open wifi networks is insane; not sure if LG does, but other devices do. Scary, as this is illegal/leads to legal liability, exposure, leakage, etc when you are close to a neighbors open network.

gbraad··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
Out of curiosity; what do you run, and how? And yes, I noticed DeepSeek stayed on track way more than Claude.
gbraad··on I refuse to let SPICE die
I think it gives the wrong impression, as they actually abandoned it.
gbraad··on I refuse to let SPICE die
Why the pony with the hat if they do not sponsor it.
gbraad··on Stop making swap partitions—use swap files instead
.. and often the only solution for a VM/hosted machine. It gives you a flexibility you otherwise not have, expand/shrink when needed; a partition is static/fixed in place. Often used them, and still do; `dd of=/swapfile if/dev/zero bs=1M count=1024`/`mkswap`, and `swapon`.
gbraad··on DeepSeek v4.1 flash runs 23 seconds/token on a 2020 16gb M1 Mac Mini
That is ≈0.043 token p/s. Impressive!
gbraad··on Claude, change the “Add to Cart” button to blue
This is why I also suspect them to waste tokens on purpose.
gbraad··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
... better than Blackwell in this specific case; which can also lead to OpenAI creating models that will only work on their own chips; vendor lock-in. When will they rename themselves?
gbraad··on My Obituary for Dr Tim King, Tripos, AmigaOS, Helios and UK Online Pioneer
Seeing the message on that day shocked me, as I hoped he would attend some Amiga meetup. I am unfortunately in Asia these days, so it makes it harder. Regardless, he was legendary and for me the crown on my Amiga history, it really made me who I am now.
gbraad··on My Obituary for Dr Tim King, Tripos, AmigaOS, Helios and UK Online Pioneer
I had an email conversation with Dr Tim King, before enrolling into electronics and CS (around age 15?). This conversation definitely confirmed this choice. He was very helpful and kind, explaining a lot about the OS level, how bcpl was used and how to develop for a new platform and the challenges. I remember this fondly and often hoped to thank him at some point. RIP

gbraad··on Fasttracker II clone in C using SDL 2
Renoise is a great tol, but in some cases a bit too feature packed for some people. I do see it used a lot, and I also occasionally do. But playback of a .mod/.med is much easier and 'guaranteed' among devices, this is why I prefer it; more self-contained.
gbraad··on Fasttracker II clone in C using SDL 2
Nice, will have a look.

And yes, trackers are great tools and with a bit of integration, like program change message, they can even provide this experience to MIDI. I use a bunch of tools I created for music making, live performance etc. trackers are almost always at the center of this for me.

gbraad··on Fasttracker II clone in C using SDL 2
A VST is not similar to what the Live extension can do. I use redux, but it is always a slightly less integrated experience, as the extension, but extensions at the moment are also not fully featured yet. In short, both have a purpose. I also converted some of my tools to both, by either writing actual MIDI data into Ableton, and otherwise, be controlled by the DAW as a VST; I work on Regroove, which is a Protracker and (Octa)MED replayed library, which can convert from and to several other formats and can be used even in a Drumlogue to playback a .mod as a groovebox like use, with looping, etc.
gbraad··on Driving in China as a Tourist
Usually it would not make a lot of sense. Long distance driving is OK, but within the city a car is often a burden, especially as a tourist as rush hour and parking are problematic. 1st tier cities have good public transport, which often gets priority anyway during rush hour. And yes, got my license while having a Z-visa many moons ago.

Note: Beijing and Shanghai are older and have less parking within the inner city, as Shenzhen is more a planned city (in the 80s it was mostly still farming land), so they have parking garages, etc.

gbraad··on Sony Deletes 551 Movies PlayStation Owners Paid For
I am considering to still psuh them to re-instate my account (EU law), but they will stop the PS3 store too. Double ff-edff news from them, as that was the a generation with many downloadable content.

You don't own anything.

gbraad··on Sony Deletes 551 Movies PlayStation Owners Paid For
I boycot Sony since they blocked my PSN account, which got hacked due to them! Purchases I made are not available, ... I really took a disliking before when they refused to fix my Vaio laptop, ... this was the last drop!

gbraad··on Wolves are reconquering Europe. Can people learn to live with them?
They do in Germany as part of a shepherds program. I applaus this, as the issue is a slightly different in the Netherlands; it will otherwise move wolves in close proximity with people. It sounds bad, but those sheeps that have been attacked might have protected from wolves wandering in more urban areas (this is already happening).
gbraad··on Wolves are reconquering Europe. Can people learn to live with them?
So far these packs are monitored, but they contain problem wolves that have been known to attack people. Examples in Utrecht and veluwe, and it takes just a little to learn from those; the issue is that the wolves do not see people as a threat. So far there have been incidents, like bite marks, until they will attack in a group. They should adopt the German method to scare them away proactively
gbraad··on Wolves are reconquering Europe. Can people learn to live with them?
This is not the same for places like the Veluwe and Utrecht in the Netherlands, where wolves have attacked people already. They do not fear people as much...

Forest rich areas are close to urban areas, and they have been spotted in border regions already.

gbraad··on Wolves are reconquering Europe. Can people learn to live with them?
This has happened; not fatally. Last July and August kids have been attacked, involved a 6yo boy; bite marks and abrasions after being dragged. While these kids survived, there is emotional damage. I was attacked by a dog, a bred that is now illegal to own, when I was a kid. And I can tell you that this fear stayed with me till late in adulthood. The encounters have become more regular as places like Belgium, Netherlands are more densely populated or in close proximity to forests. Warthogs have attacked people in my area, but they are not a false and smart like a wolf is. They are a lot more opportunistic in their approach and stealthy. So yes, the number of incidents are rising.

https://www.rtvutrecht.nl/nieuws/3929221/jongetje-6-dat-bos-...

The worst part is, often the problem wolf is known to people (multiple incidents), but there is no permit to deal with it, or just difficult even when permit is granted. There is no real plan for this
