gbalduzzi··on Ask HN: Should we bring software dev in-house?
Most business do not require on call for their internal tools
gbalduzzi··on WeTransfer Scooped Up by Filmic Pro's Parent Company Bending Spoons
Bending Spoons is buying everything.

After acquiring Evernote in 2023 and Filming in 2022, this year already acquired Issuu, StreamYard and was into talks about acquiring Vimeo

gbalduzzi··on Anyone can access deleted and private repository data on GitHub
Github also supports that if you reach out support directly
gbalduzzi··on YouTube embeds are heavy and it’s fixable
this is my greatest nitpick.

Any website with a video player should include a "full window" control

gbalduzzi··on Podman Desktop 1.11: Light mode, Kubernetes features, macOS improvements
Has someone ever tried both Rancher Desktop and OrbStack on macOS?

I love OrbStack but I never heard of Rancher Desktop before, maybe I should try it

gbalduzzi··on Podman Desktop 1.11: Light mode, Kubernetes features, macOS improvements
I never used podman desktop but I LOVE OrbStack.

Compared to docker desktop it's night and day, it is so much more performant and I never had an issue with it, totally recommend.

gbalduzzi··on The many faces of undefined in JavaScript
than just don't save the returned value?

If you don't want the result, just call

someFunction()

instead of

const a = void someFunction()

gbalduzzi··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
The point is to prevent monopoly from happening
gbalduzzi··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
EU did this to Microsoft years ago to disrupt the internet explorer monopoly. It wouldn't be fair to not demand Apple and Google to do the same now
gbalduzzi··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
It's not an alternative viewpoint, it's just plain missing the point.

The strength of Apple products and their ecosystem does not require apple forcing a monopoly on payments in their ecosystem.

If they stop abusing their position, their products will be just as good and as secure. I don't see the correlation between the article linked and that comment

gbalduzzi··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
> I choose Apple versus Android, because I want the safe and user friendly ecosystem Apple offers

And nobody wants to destroy the ecosystem. Just make it default, but not mandatory.

gbalduzzi··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
Ok, fair. Then allow app developers to explain this in the app and provide a link to the external website and let the user decide what they prefer.

The issue is that you can't publish an app unless you hide this information from the user and as a consequence most users aren't even aware that alternatives exists.

Let the user freely decide and you can't charge how much you want for the convenience of your service, even more than 30%, nobody would care.

gbalduzzi··on WebKit fix: Quirk news.ycombinator to skip TextAutoSizing
Those two things are not related at all though
gbalduzzi··on Microsoft AI spying scandal: time to rethink privacy standards
> You think there isn't a human reviewing the data of what each user is doing, but there absolutely could be, and there's no reason there can't be

I'm not sure there is a solution to this problem, unless we accept to lose a lot of features in our products and switch to E2E services.

the only alternative I can think about is some required audit about the measure in place to prevent employees from accessing data, but I'm not sure how effective that would be

gbalduzzi··on Engineering for Slow Internet
I agree with the overall take by OP, but I find this point quite problematic:

> If you have the ability to measure whether bytes are flowing, and they are, leave them alone, no matter how slow. Perhaps show some UI indicating what is happening.

Allowing this means easy DDOS attack. An attacker can simply keep thousand of connections open

gbalduzzi··on Show HN: ChatGPT UI for rabbit holes
I agree with this. The UI is already great, but a tree-like structure would be awesome.
gbalduzzi··on TTE: Terminal Text Effects
I love this kind of things the first time I see them but I would hate it in a tool used everyday
gbalduzzi··on API Shouldn't Redirect HTTP to HTTPS
The point in the article is that APIs are used by developers, not end users.

Returning an error (and/or blocking the port entirely) allows the developer to understand he is using the wrong protocol and fix it.

In this scenario, the end user never actually performs an http request, because the protocol was fixed by the service developer.

gbalduzzi··on Ask HN: Video streaming is expensive yet YouTube "seems" to do it for free. How?
Netflix already solved the on demand streaming at scale though, for them it is harder to do live events given the fact they are new to it
gbalduzzi··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
> I would find even a statement from Signal like "we can't access our users content" to be tenuous and overly-optimistic.

I don't really agree with this statement. Signal literally can't read user data right now. The statement is true, why can't they use it?

If they can't use it, nobody can. there are no services that can't publish an update reversing any security measure available. Also doing that would be illegal, because it would render the statement "we can't access our users content" false.

In Slack case, it is totally different. Data is accessible by Slack systems, the statement "we can't access our users content" is already false. Probably what they mean is something along the lines of: "The data can't be accessed by our systems, but we have measures in place that block the access to most of our employees"

gbalduzzi··on Show HN: A web debugger an ex-Cloudflare team has been working on for 4 years
Only if an exception is raised. The alternative is to record every user session, resulting in a privacy mess.

This tool allows the reporter to select when data should be collected

gbalduzzi··on GNU LibreJS: blocks JavaScript traps
I'm talking about this library, not free software in general.

How can it know when to block a website? Does an human curate a white/black list of valid websites?

gbalduzzi··on My VM is lighter (and safer) than your container (2017)
In web development I had never experienced an issue with the commonly used softwares
gbalduzzi··on GNU LibreJS: blocks JavaScript traps
So every webpage should send the whole source code at each page render? That's not very efficient.

Also, how can the plugin know if the provided source code is correct without compiling it and comparing the outputs?

gbalduzzi··on Show HN: A web debugger an ex-Cloudflare team has been working on for 4 years
I think they serve different purposes.

Sentry/Bugsnag etc track code errors and exception. But sometimes for an user an error is not a code exception, but the software having the wrong behaviour.

Some examples:

> "The button brings me to the wrong page"

> "I filled out the whole form but the submit button is not enabled"

> "The video should autoplay but is stuck loading"

Those things do not show up in Sentry logs.

gbalduzzi··on Caniemail.com – like caniuse but for email content
> The reason HTML doesn’t work well in email is because of bad prioritization, which has led to kludge upon kludge.

Honestly the main reason is that HTML/CSS expanded well over the creation of documents into the creation of apps. Email content does not really need all of that, it will always only support a subset of that causing confusion.

That said, the lack of standards is definitely the worst aspect of all of this and resulted in the current absolute chaos

gbalduzzi··on Caniemail.com – like caniuse but for email content
> clearly, it's not working if a website like this is even required. you say it is HTML compatible, then continue to tell me things in HTML are not valid for use. you say it can use CSS, then continue to tell me all of the valid CSS that cannot be used. so I'd suggest s/working/working*/ and then define the caveat as required.

That is not the point though.

The point is that the vast majority of people prefer transactional / marketing emails in rich formatting. They understand them better, they prefer interacting with them, it results in a better overall user experience.

Who creates all those transactional / marketing emails in HTML? Developers. Plenty of them.

All of them are in a difficult situation because writing HTML for sucks. It REALLY sucks. Tools like this one help them (the developers!).

Not using HTML emails is not an option in this field. It will never be as long as the average user (AKA the average customer) responds well to rich formatted emails.

gbalduzzi··on How I think about debt
Sure, and what happens when, after you do that, some calamity happens and stocks go down by more than 50%, you lose your job and you can't pay the mortgage anymore?

That is of course extreme, but proves the article point: by not having debt, you can sustain a much broaden series of events.

As everything in life, it's a spectrum. I think it's pretty reasonable to accept the "sustainability narrowing" that comes from an affordable mortgage, but I avoid taking debt for other goods that are less important and would limit my ability to withstand unexpected events and accidents

gbalduzzi··on How I think about debt
I don't read OP article as "keep all your worth in cash".

Asset allocation is of course extremely important, but the main point made in the article is not having debt
