gautamdivgi··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
Doesn't university math have tutorials and colloquiums? If you go to MIT opencourseware and look at the math and applied math courses tutorials are a big part. They're done in class to guarantee some minimal understanding. I think its the case with most math departments (not just elite ones like MIT). Not sure if something like that is possible. If you scale out of tutors with maybe a 1:3 or a 1:4 tutor to student ratio it might raise the bar for everyone. It might require a whole bunch of money though.
gautamdivgi··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
That's the first thing that my daughter was taught at RSM when she went in for 5th grade math - Algebra. They also start you with geometry in the 6th grade. I think they start Algebra a lot younger actually - maybe 2nd or 3rd grade. When I spoke to the principal of the my local RSM she said the earlier you start the better it is.

Edit:- They get homework they need to turn in. Early on I had to spend sometime with my daughter to help her cope. But once she had her concepts down its been pretty smooth sailing.

gautamdivgi··on We achieved a 6-fold increase in Podman startup speed
Different tech has different needs. I can see it being really great with server side distributed systems. I don’t really see it having any benefit for running stuff in resource constrained single purpose environments
gautamdivgi··on We achieved a 6-fold increase in Podman startup speed
Lol. Reminded me of this - https://youtu.be/cfTIjuW6SWM

Fwiw - I am a kubernetes fan. Just not in cars.

gautamdivgi··on Ageing studies in five animals suggests how to reverse decline
Yikes - hopefully one of the mutant insects doesn’t escape. Having an insect live 20% longer as a species could significantly increase their dominance.
gautamdivgi··on Yes, it's OK to be mad about crime in San Francisco
That's not entirely true. You may not live in SF but only work in SF. In this situation you have no say in SF government because your voting rights are based on where you stay and not where you work. Maybe there needs to be a way to better distribute your vote? If you're in a place for about 1/2 your waking hours of the week, maybe you should get a say in the government of that place?

Edit: This is a situation with most metro areas. Definitely with Chicago where there is a large contingent of folks who commute from the suburbs.

gautamdivgi··on Ask HN: Is the job market brutal? or is it just me?
I don’t know about the foreign persons ;) - being a naturalized citizen there are plenty of foreign citizens the wife and me know. They pay decently though but not big tech level pay. You definitely can’t answer the what you’re working on question. We live in Illinois and there’s plenty of people around us who work at the same place.
gautamdivgi··on Ask HN: Is the job market brutal? or is it just me?
That's why posted it. Most people ignore them but they do have good opportunities and generally don't have issues with ageism that exists. They are very invested in tech though. Mostly devices and embedded systems from what I know.
gautamdivgi··on Ask HN: Is the job market brutal? or is it just me?
Why - if I may ask? What’s wrong with pointing out potential employers?
gautamdivgi··on Ask HN: Is the job market brutal? or is it just me?
If you are a US citizen try defense companies.

Edit: I should have explained my reasoning. They have a much smaller eligible applicant pool - US citizens who are eligible for security clearance. Because of this they’re continuously looking for good talent.

gautamdivgi··on Andrew Huberman Has Supplements on the Brain
That might be just signal boosting, no? I mean all those people are on each others podcasts often and also have a large number of common guests. So yeah - YT thinks they’re all into the same thing but I’ve never heard Huberman get into politics.
gautamdivgi··on Stabbing of Cash App Creator Raises Alarm, and Claims of a Lawless San Francisco
The problem is one of perception and human nature. You will eventually reduce your economy because of an outflow of business and human capital out of where this is happening. It’s how food deserts in America happen. No one wants to be in places where they are physically threatened.

Edit - especially when they can’t defend themselves. I don’t like proliferation of guns. But condoning this is specifically making a case for concealed carry, stand your ground laws and increased risk of life.

gautamdivgi··on AI won't steal your job, people leveraging AI will
Everyone uses AI today directly or indirectly. All search engines and possibly stackoverflow and Reddit will start supporting LLMs. Unless you never use these in your business you will be using AI.
gautamdivgi··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
I would hazard that any country with a declining population will aggressively adopt LLMs because it gives their leaner workforce more efficiency.
gautamdivgi··on The BRICS Has Overtaken the G7 in Global GDP
Racist much? How about targeting Europe that continues to buy Russian gas?
gautamdivgi··on Kubernetes is hard
You need a decent sized team to run an on premise k8s infra. If you’re in the cloud use a managed k8s.

It’s not for everyone in that I agree with the point the author makes. But if you have multiple teams doing app development k8s can be really nice. We do data movement and ML services. AKS has proven great for our use.

gautamdivgi··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Lex Fridman Podcast [video]
I find Peterson to be an insufferable coot. Musk is obviously more dynamic.
gautamdivgi··on I unschool my 5 kids. This is how much it costs
Not sure why you were downvoted. You’re kind of right about the assumption. Most folks who I know opt for homeschooling did so for religious reasons. I’m unsure if there are others. So, yes there’s assumptions built in. It’s just that I’m trying to get past them.
gautamdivgi··on I unschool my 5 kids. This is how much it costs
Why would you have that happen? Serious question. Isn’t that putting kids in an echo chamber and restricting their access to friends?
gautamdivgi··on I unschool my 5 kids. This is how much it costs
Elementary school is generally a great time for kids to make friends and generally goof off. I have a 2nd grader and 6th graders. Both really happy and it’s public school. 6th grader will head to jr high (we do k-6 elementary) so have to see how that goes. I don’t have complaints against public schools. Both my kids look forward to going.
gautamdivgi··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
I think that’s the downside of raising interest rates. Obviously I’m no economist, but if rates are high and I’ve already got a home I will not move. If people don’t move inventory is low and needs to be built. High interest rates probably put a crimp on new buildout. Just my thoughts.
gautamdivgi··on The cloud backlash has begun: Why big data is pulling compute back on premises
So basically trading one provider for another
gautamdivgi··on The cloud backlash has begun: Why big data is pulling compute back on premises
Yes. I know, I work for a telco and have worked with central office switches and telco edge clouds. I know what goes into designing a data center to maintain 5 9’s availability. I don’t think it’s a level of complexity most companies need though.

So to your point it’s how the internet is run. But your midsize enterprise isn’t a telco. They have no expertise with this stuff.

gautamdivgi··on The cloud backlash has begun: Why big data is pulling compute back on premises
I’m not new gen. I’ve worked in telcos providing 5 9’s infra availability. A datacenter is not just servers. There is a whole host of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering that plays into it.

Edit: also OSHA rules, cable splicing, how to handle ladders, etc, etc.

gautamdivgi··on The cloud backlash has begun: Why big data is pulling compute back on premises
Do you need people in the colo to wire stuff up or is that handled by the colo folks?
gautamdivgi··on The cloud backlash has begun: Why big data is pulling compute back on premises
Why not just run IaaS on the cloud? Maintaining a datacenter is expensive. Now I’m not sure if there are companies that provide management of actual physical infrastructure - battery backup, generator, cabling, certifications of premises etc.
gautamdivgi··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
I hate to say this but you were probably an unfortunate bait for a labor certification of an existing employee on an h1b visa.

That is generally the only reason companies will stick to the bscs requirement. Normally if you have requisite experience the degree - especially bscs is not needed.

gautamdivgi··on Generative AI is overrated, long live old-school AI
Isn’t most of the mathematics of AI old, as in really old?

Regression, both linear and logistic are from the mid 1800s to early 1900s. Neural networks, at least the basics are from around 1950.

What has really changed is the engineering, the data volume and the number of fields we can apply the mathematics to. The math itself (or what is the basis of AI) is really old.

gautamdivgi··on Atlassian to shed 5 per cent of workers
I agree. I don’t get the hatred for jira. I mean don’t complicate its usage. It’s a pretty awesome tool. It’s simple. Yeah, there’s some clicking but on the whole that’s on the person owning the project to customize.

I don’t mind bitbucket either. We self host both.

gautamdivgi··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
School districts are connected to housing. As long as schools are “locally funded”, you will always have a rush for houses in the better schools.

The problem with housing is lack of public transport as well. You could get houses farther away from the city. But the lack it public transport makes commutes terrible.

If you want a great school district things get really pricey. But if you’re single or don’t have kids I’m not sure if you want to pay the taxes.

More than anything if we need to improve housing I would focus on public transport more than anything else.
