gassiss··on The new wave of React state management
Nothing implicit about react query caching requests. That's the whole point of the library in the first place, otherwise it would just be a fetch wrapper.

And having it behave differently from useState is fine, and correct. The library is used to fetch data, not state. Those are two different things

gassiss··on Sleeping longer than 6.5 hours/day can help you lose weight: study
The secret is to take the pressure out. It's about just relaxing your entire body as much as you can with your eyes close, like you do when you actually go to sleep. Even if you don't sleep, it's still beneficial.

I'm far from my 40s and I also benefit greatly from this hack. My afternoons are much more productive when I do so
gassiss··on Gnome has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked (2021)
When you have a single window in a workspace, isn't it too big? I feel like it would be weird having all my text on the left side of a huge monitor when I only have a single terminal in the workspace
gassiss··on Ask HN: Have You Regretted Immigrating?
Sure feels like, but ultimately it's just an excuse, trust me.

It takes a lot of effort to be a great communicator regardless of which language you are speaking

gassiss··on Internet drama in Canada

gassiss··on Home lab beginners guide (2021)
you don't need to spend money to have a homelab. you can do it all using VMs in your personal device (laptop/desktop) just fine
gassiss··on Amazon rainforest is losing its ability to recover from destruction
Honestly, whatever it takes to take Bolsonaro out is fair game imo
gassiss··on EU to mandate public salary information for all job postings [pdf]
This is what most people get wrong in this field. The only relationship between cost of labor and value is the upper bound. Which means no for-profit company would hire someone for less value than what they expect to get in return for that person.

But the actual cost of labor (your compensation) is dictated by market forces just like any other commodity. Why would anyone hire you at $100k/year if they have someone else, just as good as you, that they can hire at $50k/year?

Your ability to negotiate is tied to your leverage, which more often than not is competing offers (including your current job). That has absolutely nothing to do with value, other than the upper bound I mentioned above.

gassiss··on EU to mandate public salary information for all job postings [pdf]
The actual reality is that your salary is not tied to your value, but to your negotiation skills (carried mostly by your leverage when you receive the offer)
gassiss··on Ask HN: What is one book you would recommend everyone to read?
This reminds me of a communication professor I had. He claimed that, over time, professors have the ability to explain something simple in 5 minutes or 2 hours.

I think the point is, there's many ways to make a point. Communication is hard. Reading a four page overview of a book is not the same experience as reading the actual book. Neither is reading a four page overview written by somebody else.

I also didn't like Carnegie book for the same reason you mentioned, but I wouldn't dismiss it for that reason

gassiss··on How I took my SaaS from idea to sold in 14 months
This has to be the coolest experience I've ever had with a landing page
gassiss··on Unvaccinated workers who lose jobs ineligible for unemployment benefits (Canada)
Well that's with all vaccines. I meant it's not specific to the covid one
gassiss··on Unvaccinated workers who lose jobs ineligible for unemployment benefits (Canada)
That's mostly to watch for allergic reactions, which if you get you need medical assistance asap. Nothing to do with the covid vaccine itself.
gassiss··on Ask HN: What are the best books for professional effectiveness?
A lot of times I dismiss books/movies because I've already had the experience.
gassiss··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
at one point you had to work hard to learn the things that you did, no chance you're a seasoned expert working 5 minutes per day
gassiss··on Research finds immune system responds to mRNA treatment for cancer

gassiss··on SQL: The difference between WHERE and HAVING
This is why I love devdocs.io. I think it's supported by freecodecamp.org
gassiss··on Up all night with a Twitch millionaire
You can't be comparing Twitch to the government. Those are not even remotely the same thing
gassiss··on Global economic inequality: what matters most is where you are
I don't know about the others, but Canada is probably the easiest developed country to immigrate to. You can basically get a green card before you even land
gassiss··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
> but whatever you end up in you will ultimately have to do work you don't enjoy from time to time, or play politics to keep everybody happy... or deal with a coworker you don't like.

This also applies to you if you're a business owner. Just replace the word "coworker" with "employee" or "customer" (or "partner")

I think the point the person you replied to was trying to make is that you should treat yourself as your own business. Your employer-employee relationship is the same as any other business-business relationship. You're basically selling your time and you should continue to do so for as long as it is beneficial for you.

gassiss··on Will real estate ever be normal again?
Yeah I know. The point is the comparison is not really mortgage vs rent. From a purely financial perspective you're paying mortgage + owning costs + rent opportunity cost + liquidity risk.

If you can pay a mortgage most likely you can pay a rent, and it's going to be way cheaper if you factor everything in. And in both cases you can be evicted if you don't pay anyway.

gassiss··on Will real estate ever be normal again?
This is what most people get wrong about home ownership. Mortgage and rent are two different, unrelated things.

Rent is part of the value of a property. If you live in it, you're essentially paying its opportunity cost. That in itself has nothing to do if you borrowed money against it or not.

The only way to not pay rent is to make someone else pay for you (eg live with someone else that doesn't charge you)

gassiss··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Can a master in the field replace the bachelor? Eg. I have a bachelor in business, going through a master in CS, am I eligible for TN visa as Software Engineer or Computer Systems Analyst?
gassiss··on COBOL – Still standing the test of time

gassiss··on How JavaScript Works: deep dive into call, apply, and bind
any loop in a few hundred elements is going be trivial regardless of the amount of work you do.

I don't think the web is getting slower because we're using more map() instead of for...of loops. It's getting slower because what is being developed is getting more complex.

Feature bloat and excessive network load are the main reasons that the web feels slower imo.

gassiss··on Helix: a post-modern modal text editor
With regards to keyboard navigation it gets really good if you work for it (no harder than you would with an editor like EMACS or Vim).

I use vim extension which works well for editing the files themselves. Accessing pretty much almost anything else can be done using the command palete and you can manually assing keybinds to it as well.

gassiss··on useStateMachine: A ½ kb state machine hook for React
Because you could be nesting hooks, which would bring all sorts of weird behavior.
gassiss··on Ask HN: If you're so smart how come you're not rich?
I used to feel this way as well. Until I realized that my way of living would be no different being multi millionaire vs how much I make now, except with bigger numbers in the screen of my bank account(s).

Making millions takes a lot of hard work. I'd rather work on my hobbies.

gassiss··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
It definitely got a lot better over the years, but it still happens sometimes. I don't know the criteria, but it is basically having some update pending install.
