garyfirestorm··on Buy a train, bridge or tracks from the Swiss Railway
Do they ship internationally
garyfirestorm··on FCC wants to kill burner phones by forcing telecoms to get all customers' IDs
Isn’t this already a requirement? Can you really buy a burner phone/sim without providing identifying information?
garyfirestorm··on Flock license plate reader wrongly linked a San Diego man to a violent crime
Schrodinger's flock - the 'hit' helped us catch the criminals and the hit is wrong. but we are going ahead with prosecution nonetheless.
garyfirestorm··on Flock license plate reader wrongly linked a San Diego man to a violent crime
But flock hit is the entire reason for the cops to go arrest them. And you’re right if they did careful assessment of other flock camera data, even the data of this particular flock camera they would have known this car was 5 miles away 23 seconds later. The whole point being misusing/abusing flock data to wrongly jail people and that is precisely what happened here. Flock is the center of this story.
garyfirestorm··on Feds failing in bid to take a supercomputer from a climate research center
RAM shortage is really hitting the legislators hard
garyfirestorm··on I made my phone slow on purpose
I found an incredibly simple solution for this. Screen time in iOS can block specific websites and apps installed on your device. Set harmless time limits - 5 min for instagram. 2 mins for Reddit.com etc.

Ask your spouse or a friend you trust to set screen time passcode. You can’t bypass it and you’re not going cold turkey either or losing an important utility like Safari.

Doom scroll all you want in 2 mins then it’s locked for the day.

I have succeeded and it’s been 3+ months.

garyfirestorm··on Legislation Killed Would Have Effectively Blocked Police LPR, Including Flock
When a set of banal traffic observation cameras turn into surveillance of a particular individual, then you’re being unreasonably searched/tracked/stalked. This should require a probable cause and proper warrant "we want to identify this individuals movements because …"

This is a clear violation of the 4th amendment.

garyfirestorm··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
They undid public charge from my memory. It doesn’t exist anymore.
garyfirestorm··on I don't think AI will make your processes go faster
In my world automotive/mechanical engineering we are also observing how much AI can help you build a mental model, fetch unstructured data and help shape your understanding of the system. Onboarding new engg. figuring out what is what in the system. It could have taken hours before to fetch right info, now we are able to do this in seconds.
garyfirestorm··on Claude Account Suspended Seconds After Purchase?

garyfirestorm··on Hackers breach JDownloader's website to serve malware-laced downloads
The ‘scene’ or warez sites are still up and running. Sharing cracked softwares, movies shows etc. through file hosting services. If say you wanted a Blu-ray movie with Dolby atmos sizing near 10 gig. Then you’d queue the file sharing site download links in jdownloader and let it automatically manage these downloads for you.
garyfirestorm··on DHS demanded Google surrender data on a Canadian man over anti-ICE posts
Shouldn’t we fix the laws instead of penalizing users for using cloud services? There should be freedom to use cloud services for our convenience without having to accept legal defeat. That should be the focus for fix.
garyfirestorm··on New statue in London, attributed to Banksy, of a suited man, blinded by a flag
waving any flag and thinking its us or them is equally blinding. the world is not vacuum and to coexist we need to put flags behind and work together.
garyfirestorm··on Mercedes-Benz commits to bringing back physical buttons
If you can save a dollar on a part, and that part goes into millions of cars per year… then it will be on the chopping block. That cost and weight savings are then passed onto other things, better rear camera? More electrical current to charge your phone faster. Quicker HVAC operation? Everything is a compromise and tradeoff.

garyfirestorm··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I have been both on visa side of things and LPR/citizen side of things. I don’t understand this mindset lpr|citizen>>perm|visa. As if the perm/visa individual has no life and can easily pack a handbag and leave tomorrow. Not defending any processes here just pointing out people (perm or not) buy homes/cars have kids in schools etc and by the time they get to perm process they are pretty much ingrained here. The viewpoint of ‘discarding’ batches of perms sounds very hypocritical.
garyfirestorm··on Show HN: A Multi User Multi Task Board MCP Server
Why not connect to JIRA using an MCP? Would also be helpful to provide userid/password to demo instance or simply a button to log onto demo user account
garyfirestorm··on Tell HN: An app is silently installing itself on my iPhone every day
This setting does not exist on iOS 26.4.1
garyfirestorm··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
Under the name of the* same government. You can’t equate 1940s US govt with today’s government. Different people different priorities different actions. Not necessarily saying good or bad one way or the other. But ‘same’ is reductionist way of interpreting the situation. There’s plenty of nuance.
garyfirestorm··on AI is about to make the global e-waste crisis worse
Even 2 generations older 30 series GPUs are holding their value. Definitely not being thrown out as ewaste.
garyfirestorm··on Show HN: MDV – a Markdown superset for docs, dashboards, and slides with data
nope this is becoming a theme. many showhn posts that are about visualizations do not have any renderings of said visualizations. especially in github readme.

garyfirestorm··on Police used AI facial recognition to wrongly arrest TN woman for crimes in ND
It’s a tool. Used incorrectly will lead to errors. Just like a hammer, used incorrectly could hit the users finger.
garyfirestorm··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
Inversely I leased a Fiat 500e for a year in Detroit Michigan and had no issues with range ~130 miles. I would plug it in nightly as I had a level 2 charger installed at my house. The experiment was quite successful. I just didn’t like front wheel drive on somedays with heavy snow. I used it for commuting to work, buying groceries and visiting friends nearby. It met my needs and I feel a slightly bigger car with 4 doors and 200-250 mile range should be sufficient for most of the people (assuming it is affordable)
garyfirestorm··on France's aircraft carrier located in real time by Le Monde through fitness app
We couldn’t find a commercial jet (MH370). Both, while it was still flying in the air and after it was presumably lost in the ocean. They couldn’t track it in the air nor can they still find its remains after looking for it for so long. This problem is not trivial.
garyfirestorm··on I'm OK being left behind, thanks
Counter point. It’s always advantageous to learn and grow as things evolve. This way you have an active role and maybe a say in how it will evolve. And maybe you could contribute towards that evolution (despite poor execution openclaw showed what LLMs could be doing)

> There are a 16,000 new lives being born every hour. They're all starting with a fairly blank slate.

Not long ago we were ridiculing genZ for not knowing why save icon looks like a floppy disk.

Do you want to feel like that in next 5-10 years?

garyfirestorm··on Federal Right to Privacy Act – Draft legislation
As opposed to bills sponsored by real people that completely decimated privacy? Patriot Act? I’ll take slop that has some semblance of reasonable privacy protection any day.
