garrypettet··on Luxe Game Engine
This looks neat. It uses Bob Nystrom's Wren language for scripting and has been in development for a few years.
garrypettet··on Was BASIC that horrible or better?
Ignore the naysayers replying to this. I have no vested interest in Xojo except I’ve been coding with it and enjoying it since 2004.
garrypettet··on UK Treasury trying to find a Head of Cyber Security for £55k
It’s worth pointing out that this is a higher salary than most doctors make (below consultant level) in the UK.
garrypettet··on Small Visual Basic
I really recommend Xojo[1] (formally RealBasic). It’s like a modern VB6 but runs on macOS, Windows and many flavours of Linux.

It has very polished drag and drop UI editor.

I’ve been developing with it for over 20 years and my 10 year old daughter is now learning programming with it.

You can create and debug apps for free and only need a license to deploy an app as a binary so it’s ideal to learn with.

Heck, it can even build for the raspberry pi.

garrypettet··on Roguelike Tutorial in Rust (2019)
I’ve just started out with Flame and Flutter. As a newcomer to game development (but experienced in other genres of coding) I’ve found it great.
garrypettet··on Show HN: Piano Trainer – Learn piano scales, chords and more using MIDI
This looks great - well done.

As a self taught pianist I’d like to give a shout out to Simply Piano (1). It’s an iPad app that can take you from absolute beginner to a fairly advanced level. Connects via midi or uses the microphone.

I went from not being able to play any instrument to sheet reading Fur Elise in about a year of playing 15/20 minutes per day.

New music drops every week covering classical, pop, movies, jazz, etc.

A very happy customer.

garrypettet··on Pike Programming Language
Take a look at Wren if you want a similar looking embeddable scripting language. It was created by Bob Nystrom (who now works in Dart). It’s a lovely language.

garrypettet··on RAD Basic – Compatible with Visual Basic 6 projects
Yeah they renamed it maybe 10 years ago (it’s pronounced Zo Joe). It’s a fast compiled BASIC like OOP language that runs natively on x86 and ARM.
garrypettet··on RAD Basic – Compatible with Visual Basic 6 projects
I’ve been a happy user of Xojo (formally RealBasic) for about 20 years. It’s really powerful and free to use when getting started. I really like the all-in-one IDE and the ability to cross compile for macOS, Windows and Linux. Their desktop support is pretty good. Their iOS and web support not such much however. I think it’s a shame they are not more well known
garrypettet··on Playstation 5 root keys obtained
That's not been my experience on a console since the Sega Megadrive. Whenever I find a couple of hours to play video games (working around kids, wife, etc) I inevitably have to spend an hour downloading countless patches, updates, etc. Modern day gaming consoles have become more difficult to just pick up and play than consoles of yesteryear.
garrypettet··on Performance Improvements in .NET 6
I've been using Xojo (https://xojo.com) for about 15 years now to make cross-platform GUI apps. The language is similar to VB6 but it's been constantly updated. No affiliation, just a happy customer.
garrypettet··on Chibicc: A Small C Compiler
What a great resource. I will certainly pick up the book when it’s out.
garrypettet··on Apple announces it will switch to its own processors for future Macs
I wonder what impact this will have for developers using non-Apple development tools. For example, I'm a C# .NET Core developer using Visual Studio. I'm hoping that the architecture shift won't be too disruptive to people who choose to use development environments other than Apple's Xcode.
garrypettet··on Ask HN: What is the safest way to purchase Ripple?
Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately I've registered on about 6 different exchanges (including the ones mentioned) but all are pending verification. Looks like a lot of these exchanges are struggling with scale...
garrypettet··on Crafting Interpreters – Inheritance
I cannot rate this book high enough. Anyone with an interest in how languages are implemented should read this. Bob has a fantastic writing style making it a pleasant read. Additionally, he doesn't stop at the point many tutorials do (simple arithmetic and control flow) but he actually goes into how to implement classes and, now, inheritance.
garrypettet··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
As a highly educated physician who voted for Brexit, I find your interpretation of the "Brexit movement" woefully incorrect. There are plenty of well informed, well read and intelligent people who feel that the concept of the European Union no longer provides a net benefit to Britain. No doubt there are plenty of well educated Americans who voted for Trump too.
garrypettet··on I built an arcade machine
Hoping this might provide a bit of inspiration for other non-DIY savvy programmers/nerds like myself. It's easier than you might think to build.
garrypettet··on Ask HN: Those making $1,000+/month on side projects – what did you make?
My revision website for radiologists in training brings in about £1-2K per month: https://reviseradiology.com
garrypettet··on Show HN: Codeanywhere
Not affiliated with this but the product seems to work as advertised. Lets me work on my sites during my lunch hour at work on any office browser.
