garciasn··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
They charged her criminally instead of civilly, because in 2023 VA passed a 'free-range parenting' amendment to allow for actions that appropriate for the child's maturity and are not done in a grossly negligent manner that endangers the child. This is likely why the defense asked for comments from others on the child's maturity.

The criminal definition apparently has no such modification.

garciasn··on Advertisers Could Soon Demand 'Verified Clicks'
I mean it’s a marketing PR piece that’s likely targeted toward CMOs who are in love with email marketing.

Email marketing is inexpensive, easier to measure, relies on the ridiculous CDPs and ESPs they’ve been tricked into investing in, and the measured numbers are larger than other digital channels.

The problem isn’t that bots are clicking, it’s that those big numbers aren’t going up and to the right in a reliable way any longer and those CMOs need to change how they’re measuring media.

At the end of the day, CMOs need to be measuring contribution to revenue, not meaningless marketing metrics the rest of the C-suite doesn’t give the slightest of fucks about. But that’s super hard for most organizations without competent Marketing Science or capable agencies, and it’s seemingly expensive because their budgets are already tight from all of the fly-by-night shit they’re over invested in. So; they continue to push what they know as well as chip away at their budgets with silly providers who provide little value instead of biting the bullet and doing the right thing.

garciasn··on Advertisers Could Soon Demand 'Verified Clicks'
https://archive.ph/PIrQi

The article is about email marketing. Some company has a proprietary algorithm that purportedly detects whether a click is legitimate based on 8y of development and data collection.

It’s definitely a race against the growing capabilities of the models in use and one that will be very difficult to win which is why there has been a significant push toward verification across the Internet—not because of the children, but because of the revenue.

garciasn··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
Lexapro, noted in the article, was literally life changing for me. I felt better within 3d and I notice severe issues if I miss ~3d of doses in a row, even though the half-life should support ~7d without according to my physician.

That said, yes; walking is the best medicine for me.

garciasn··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
I worked at a 10,000 person company ~15y ago. I was a lowly employee at the time; just a run of the mill Research Analyst writing code in SAS. I got on the elevator w/the CEO, said hello, and he knew exactly who I was and what I did.

Two important grounding items for me when I went into management and my career accelerated:

1. Take the worst boss I ever had (coincidentally at the same company) and make sure that I do the exact opposite of everything they did when leading others.

2. Mirror the actions of that CEO and make sure I remember every single person and what they did; it leaves a lasting impression on people.

garciasn··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
You have a worldview that’s incompatible with the reality of the current US legal system where things work the way you believe they should, rather than the way they actually do.

Morality and direct commonsense interpretations of law do not apply when there are literally unlimited resources stacked against you. But, assuming you can wait the potential ~10y to receive your device back that it will take to get your device returned to you, good on you. If you think that the current SCOTUS will rule in your favor, good on you.

The reality is, we live in a time where the most horrendous interpretation of the law is the one that will happen. And it won’t be in your favor.

garciasn··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
It’s $1800; they are applying trade-in and some sort of GoogleFi discount to get it down to $1100.

Nearly $2000 after tax for a phone is fucking absurd.

garciasn··on Companies promote incompetent employees to management to limit damage they do
Literally heard that someone wasn’t promoted to a VP role because they were too good at their job as a Director and promoting them would lose their competency.

So; instead of having a competent VP leading a team of absolute incompetents and changing the direction and capabilities of that entire org, we lost a capable leader to another company.

Leadership politics and maneuvering is fucking stupid.

garciasn··on Ask HN: Is this the worst time to be human?
Yeah; /this/ is the worst time to be a human. Right.

We have the ability not to die of previously common disease.

We are the most educated and wealthy population ever.

We have arguably one of the longest collective lifespans.

We don’t necessarily have to commit labor for the wealthy without any pay at all.

But we have the threat of climate change; something no generation before 100y ago considered at all.

We have the supposed, but possible, threat of AI changing things for us, something no one could have possibly concerned themselves with previously.

We have instant access to all of the worlds knowledge in the palms of our hands and we can travel to any point on Earth within 24h or less for relatively little money.

Most of us have access to shelter, power, food and water.

Yeah; it’s definitely not the worst time to be alive. But we have to worry about things that might not come to pass instead of worrying about what definitely will come to be like prior generations.

Absurd.

garciasn··on Asus Bike Booster
People who already invested in an expensive traditional bike and want to have the option to add electric support to make trips easier and faster without having to deal with selling their current bike and buying an even more expensive e-bike.

There’s also the fact that many people have bike racks that are fine for traditional bikes but not the additional requirements necessary for some (most?) e-bikes such as weight and strength.

Just because it doesn’t work for you and your specific worldview doesn’t mean others wouldn’t see value in it.

garciasn··on CEO who fired 900 people on Zoom just before Christmas wants his job back
Just like a mass wedding is fucking stupid, so is a mass layoff.

You can have the fucking common decency to do a 1:1 Zoom call with each person. Or at least each fucking team.

Firing 900 people simultaneously is not only stupid and callous, but lazy. There’s absolutely no excuse for that level of inhumanity.

garciasn··on Toxic underground fires spreading at California landfills
The problem is that the statutory fines need to be setup so that they are actually a deterrent rather than a cost of doing business.

They need to be based on revenue and an exponentially growing cost per violation, directly related or not.

First offense: 25% of ALL TIME revenue (not profit)

Second offense: 50%

Third offense: 100%

Why 100%? Because they should be effectively put out of business if they get to their third offense. California has the third strike rule for people and crime, let's make it the same for corporations; they're people after all.

garciasn··on US Military asks troops for 'creative and unconventional' ideas to punish Iran
I mean, it sorta works; but, only because of sheer luck. Both of those countries have no real power. Cuba, in particular, has negative value on the global scene and NK only has somewhat empty threats of nuclear weapons. The only true fear is dealing with NK's populace flooding into SK or China during any regime collapse.
